People are missing something...

Turn the GPX2 around the OTHER way. The four face buttons form a dpad, and you have start/select for buttons. Yes I know the controls are reversed (right thumb for dpad, left for buttons) but many classic arcade games worked that way anyway.

It would work just fine for MAME.

May not be perfect, but it's there waiting to be tried if GPX2 doesn't get redesigned (and it's unlikely it will at this point in time, although I voted for the 2nd picture).

exactly!!

a d-pad it is young jedi...

let go your feelings Dave C...

I could add some more buttons. but I think more that 26 buttons gonna be useless, on this console.

26 is the magic number.

ohhh hahahaha!!!! funny stuff man... ooooh

anyway, the 6 button layout you posted, gamersglory, doesn't look very comfortable. it's should be:
OOO
OOO
not:
OO
OO
OO

hah :D

Waaah! People on this forum need to learn how to quote!
Stop quoting whole threads/images its bloody annoying :p

I think there should be a coin slot to give that 'real arcade' feeling

That would be like the PSP d-pad only worse as the buttons aren't actually connected. It would be pretty difficult to hit diagonals.

If they don't change it I will end up doing a mod to add the extra buttons and tie them to the others. It would have to be like the first pic because of space though.

I guess I just dont care enough about the minority of vertical screen games to care about changing the button layout. leave it the way it is. I'll play with black bars on the sides or just play something else entirely.

I don't understand why so many of you would rather have a more limited layout. It just doesn't make any logical sense. You would rather play with black bars on the side and the top and bottom cut off for what? What is the big advantage the way it is now? It gives absolutely NO advantage and only limitations. You actually WANT more limitations? By your logic we should remove some buttons because they are only needed for SNES and you don't play SNES so why not just take them out.

So why is it better the way it is? I would like to know because I can't see any advantage.

Woah! Getting right button happy, aren't we? Something a bit more functional might be nice.... The 2-button MAME style and the 6 button layout are nice, but should include the shoulder buttons I think for extras.

The problem with that is space. There really isn't enough room to put all of those buttons on there. You would need to increase the size of the unit quite a bit. The two pictures that I put up are real easy to do at this point in time. Even if the molds are done an insert could be made to plug the volume and 2 more holes could be made in the die for the other 2 holes. From a manufacturing standpoint this would probably be the limit to what could be changed economically at this point.

It's not an advantage, just the way it was built. Basically what you;re asking for amounts to having a Dpad on the right side of the controller because there might be left handed people who want to use it. Not everyone is going to play the dozen or so emulatable verticle scrolling shooters out there. It's a Minority in terms of game play and to risk comfort on the wider range of games you're likely to have on your SD card is counter-intuative to the principals of hardward design.

Yeah, it'd be nice to have buttons exactly where you want them to be for every game you're ever likely to play in your life but you can't please everyone.

No, I am not asking for a d-pad near the controller I am asking for 2 fire buttons next to the stick. Not for left handedness, for vertical orientated games. Take Donkey kong (MAME)for example, it must be played with the unit rotated 90 to get the full screen. Those buttons would be used for "jump" in portrait mode.

Not everyone will play vertical games but many WILL. It will be near impossible with the current layout.

How is this layout going to "risk comfort on the wider range of games " ? There is nothing here that "risks comfort" of any other game. Having tiny "start/select" buttons below ABXY is no more comfortable than if they were below the stick. You don't make sense here.

Doubtful. You have to realize that the PSP is monsterously wider than this little gpx2, so, the buttons on this console are undoubtedly very small and close together (unlike the large, spaced-out d-pad of the PSP), so diagonals should not pose a problem here.

I'm sure that using the action buttons for directions will be relatively comfortable and accurate. ;)

Dave tell me, do you turn your monitor side ways when you play these games on your computer? I'm going to guess "no". If you do not understand my thinking on it then it's simply because you do not want to.

Yes it'd be nice to get the "Full effect" and I admire your desire for it. But the fact is Donkey Kong is still quite playable without a verticle screen so I file that under "nice but unneccesary".

You still don't make any sense and that is why I don't understand your "thinking". Rotating a handheld game and flipping a big computer monitor is like completely different. For one thing a computer monitor has enough resolution to display the whole image when normal, the GP32 does not. Can you play it on the GP32 not vertical? well yes except for the fact that the bottom of the screen is chopped off.

I still don't see how your "arguement" proves that it is better to NOT have the *option* (not a requirement) to play rotated.

Everone has been saying more buttons less buttons better buttons well i got an ide i like the six button idea but why not move 2 of them to the back and get rid of the sholder buttons all to gether and have the 2 full sized ones below the stick.

I just explained it to you like you were a 5 year old dude but like I said you just dont want to understand what I'm saying. But you know something I'll make one last attempt simply because I refuse to loose total faith in the human mind in regards to comprehension.

I would rather have the buttons in places where I am going to use them more often for a larger number of games than in places that only help for a small number of games.

Now then, you can continue to argue that you don't understand but that's no longer my problem.
