My first impressions of the Pyra

Also, its not even starts shipping to normal endusers, but to "Preepreeorderers", whe shout "Shut up and take our money", and these 200 where known to be on a quite early stage, maybe after the 200, the Software might got mature a bit more..
On the Pandora, when i got my unit, it was also on a quite early stage, but at least it got a 3D Driver if i remember correctly..

Very sad how people are so comformist these days but this is what we have on a overprotective society like ours.
Have you seen the general opinion of the Pyra on other news sites? People here are a fringe. You have cause and effect reversed. It's not that we like the Pyra because we're here, it's that we're here because we like the Pyra. The Pyra boards attract people that like the Pyra.

The Pyra has a lot of disadvantages but it also has a unique set of advantages and thus it attracts people that happen to find those advantages very important. I think that's all there is to it.

State of the Pyra now is a little rough to be honest, but it's mainly just down to software, even somethings that most perceive as a hardware issues (nub drifting). The Pandora at first was in the same boat, but the only difference between the Pandora and Pyra was there was already some community experience with the n900 and beagleboard scene using the same chip that could come in an help, the OMAP5 is unique animal and the Pyra has a ton more features and complicated design compared to the Pandora which requires a lot more low level work to be done to get the Pyra where it is now and more needs to be done. I can feel for people like @Xcl4m4t10n who likely just expected a device to be fully working out of the box, that isn't the Pyra, nor was it the Pandora when it first launched.

I know with more people getting their Pyras things will get resolved, but feel like there should be some organized planning to get some of the bigger issues resolved. I wish I had the time and skills to get more involved with that.

As mentioned before, this is still the Pre-Pre-Order of the Pyra we expected all the difficulties of being first in line.

I received my unit today and I really loved the box-opening experience and the I think the paint and build is really good for an independently made device. The screen size and resolution made a big difference in usability too. Thank you @EvilDragon !

For anyone in the UK: perhaps I was lucky but FedEx did not make any additional customs/VAT or clearance charges on the parcel.

Beware, I’ve found that sometimes they like to surprise you with a charge after delivery...

Pyra slipped through the night while everyone was confused.

Got my unit, not an expert so looking for some details on getting Sim (TMobile) to work. Right now I have connections as follows: Name: T-Mobile LTE 1 / APN: fast.tmobile.com / Network ID: 0 / Access number *99#.
No workie, any advice would be appreciated. Apologies for my limited knowledge.

In the mean time, Pyra is on front page of HackerNews:

Oh joy - Brexit the gift that keeps on surprising. Thanks for the heads-up. I'll keep my powder dry a bit longer then.

ED is a real packaging ninja, really optimised the use of space. I was thinking where the hell can it all fit?? :D

Well, it shouldn't be a surprise that the case is not as good as would like it to be if you followed the news and the issues we had with the first company.
It's at least as good as Pandora's case though, and I definitely plan to improve the case in the future with new moulds (which are pretty expensive, but I think it's necessary) to make the unit slimmer and more optimized.

Apart from that, it's pretty much as the Pandora was back then. Drivers need some work, assembling improves whenever I find out how to improve stuff (the latest cases have the battery cover issue fixed as well) and the only huge downside at the moment is that the software is not yet optimized yet enough to run emulators or games properly.
That will change once 3D is running better (at the moment, it often crashes), and ptitSeb is working on that.

Im fine whit the Case, i mean ok it’s looks like a Pocket Computer from the 90thes, but I find it comfortable to hold, and the Hinge is also much less wobbly then on the Pandora..
ok you can’t use the Stylus as long it’s not fully fold open, but it’s holds quite good when you use the Nubs.. there is allways room for improvement but I don’t think redesign will cause that much difference in high...
there is too many stuff in the Pyra that needs space^^

Not send from my Pyra, but my Pyra is also here whit me ^^

Is really worth the effort? I wish to be wrong but I expect the same problems again.
Well he's found a better greek case company now, who seem keen to make better moulds, especially now there's the the more imminent offer of hundreds of cases being made.

Now there is a limit to what he can do. The board and the battery and the buttons take a certain amount of space. It wouldn't surprise me if the lip around the lid is more deep than it needs to be, and the battery cover is made more deep than it would need to be if the bottom of the case were only as thick as required I think.

We have a brute diamond to be shaped. That is our object and there is a path to work on. Those who don't want to work will always complain. Those who do, will help shape it to the most marvelous form and it will certanly attend the self as well as bringing a new horizon to the other shapers. That is the beauty in such a project, acting and learning. Imho of course.

Maybe he can use the extra space to fit in a camera!
I would still love to have a decent camera on the outside of the lid or at the back where the ports and shoulder buttons are, Also a good white and/or amber flash LED. I often take pictures of stuff I need to remember.
I know a lot of people do not want a camera on the Pyra so I figured maybe some add-on can be developed which would be way simpler and cheaper. I just came up with this concept when I read your post :)

May I present: The Pyra Porta-hub!
