"The Xbox One Might Let Sony's PS4 Win By Default"

if Sony rejects the sorts of policies that Microsoft officially put forth last night, they might win the console war
This article pretty much sums it up.

If Sony really wants to win, put a complete end to all the BS that MS has brought to the table, or get in bed with them, and hope the public prefers your BS to theirs. Then, you may be handing the crown to Nintendo by default as well.

Honestly, I have such a HUGE backlog of 360, PS3, DS, 3DS, and Vita games, I'm more than happy to give them both the BIG middle finger and continue down the path I'm on(which will only include WiiU at some later date).

I'd rant about how wrong the piece is, but I'm sure you can see the flaws yourselves.
I like this part:
The reality is, in order for Microsoft – and most likely Sony too – to "kill game ownership", we would have had to owned the games in the first place.

Only for the last two decades at least, we haven't.
Technically he is entirely correct, the license agreements we have been agreeing to for the last many years have been revocable licenses to play at their discretion, just with no way to enforce it. This, however, is entirely semantics. Technically I don't own my car, the bank does, and they can, at their discretion, take back their car at any point in time. This doesn't happen, however, so long as I keep paying my bills. Imagine the bank coming along and suddenly saying "you must have at least $2'000'000 deductible on your insurance and no one under the age of 25 can drive the car" until it has been completely paid off. Technically they could do such a thing, put such clauses in the contract, as lienholder they have certain rights to protect their investment; no one would work with such a bank because it just isn't done that way, it isn't what people expect. Here's Microsoft, technically in their right according to the license agreements we've been agreeing to for years now actively trying to take advantage of the wording in those agreements. It just isn't done that way and they're confused as to why people are upset. "It's not like you actually owned the games before", true, but there was a societal understanding of how it worked; you can't just change the rules of society overnight.

Well we will have to wait till e3 to see what sonys policies will be, but i may well get a ps4 in light of the x-box one's current policies.

And im a real xbox and xbox 360 fan. The exclusives were vastly superior on the 360 as opposed to the ps3.

The ps3's ridiculous updates and firmware and shite online store navigation pissed me off bigtime.

i think the ps4 will have removed these issues.

I'm in same boat as Jumpman. Backlog of awesome games to finish... I think the games companies fail to realise that as gamers have grown up the time available for gaming, after responsibilities and providing one respects those responsibilites has decreased. I've stopped buying games on the whole for the last couple of years apart from Steam sales and impulse buys because of the decent price... MS clarifications of the measures of forcing the license VS product down the consumers throat are doing little to entice me into the next generation.I'll probably end up with Wii U, simply because it has backwards compatibility and the Wii mode has been hacked so the convenience of playing my collection from USB HDD would still be possible... plus steps have been made to run Game Cube games and additionally the Wiimode emulators will still run so it will just offer more in the realms of playing games I'm yet to finish.

MS should have come up with a headset that somehow helps finish games without spoiling them... meh... I hope people avoid supporting taking away our basic consumer rights.

"Microsoft Has Hired People To Make Positive Comments About Xbox One On Reddit"http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-positive-reddit-comments-2013-6

Representatives of Microsoft may be hanging out on the social news site voting up positive comments about the Xbox One, voting down negative comments and adding pro-Xbox comments of their own
Not the first time they have been caught doing that.

I've seen it first hand on Engadget, anyone including myself that made negative comments on the desktop metro ui were immediately responded to by the same users who in the space of minutes had a lot of likes.

I'm guessing redditers are pretty good at spotting spammers...

You guys don't seem to realize it's not Microsoft or Sony pushing for this, it's the publishers.

So, I would be very surprised that Sony doesn't have such plans, to ensure publishers use their PS4 as a platform.

They will probably make it optional and leave it at the discretion of publishers. Sony has said NOTHING about this, and they have kept silent after the XBOXONE announcement, they are probably thinking how to make their policies "shine" under a better light. But it's probably going to be in the same line.

Except it's globally applied on the Xbox One (ie mandatory authentication checks online) whereas if it's optional on the PS4 then that's easy enough to live with - I'd just avoid any titles from publishers choosing to apply DRM so I couldn't 'own' them.

Sony appear to have implied that their own first party titles wouldn't be affected, and that's good enough for me - as for EA (chief villain in the story), only the Need For Speed titles hold any appeal for me, and I can get those on my 360.

Chaotic, interesting times ahead.

Another impassioned piece:

How Games Licensing Works on Xbox One

The "Trade-in and resell your disc-based games" section makes interesting reading.
"participating retailers" for one part. And...

Microsoft may change its policies, terms, products and services to reflect modifications and improvements to our services, feedback from customers and our business partners or changes in our business priorities and business models or for other reasons. We may also cease to offer certain services or products for similar reasons.

It's very possible that Sony changes their stance anytime, too. It's not the first time they change their policy during the life of the console (removing the possibility to install Linux OS on the PS3, in case you don't remember... among other things).

I don't trust Sony or Microsoft - and let's not forget the mess they did with our credit cards data. You ready to forgive them ?

I would only ever use an anonymous pre-paid credit card for such a service - but then I'm not a target for them, I don't use my consoles online, I'm really only concerned with the single player games :)

NeoGaf poster 'CBoat', who has an apparently good track record on these things, has posted some 'insider info/spoilers' from E3:

1. Confirmed Microsoft is actively attempting to get developers to not mention PS4 versions. If they don't say "OUR GAME IS EXCLUSIVE FOR XBONE" expect a PS4 version. #truthfact

2. More DRM messaging at Gamescom. There is no rental strategy. Try to sweep it under the rug and hope people don't remember.

3. Cloud power was designed as DRM. Period. DRM was Microsoft's idea. EA and Ubisoft are supporters, Activision slightly less so.

4. DRM plans are actually worse than what they've stated.

5. Mirror's Edge 2 at MS conference.

6. Prince of Persia (reboot?) at MS conference.

7. Secret Phil Spencer game = World of Banks?

8. Live paywall still there.

9. Dead Rising 3, and exclusive DLC for another Capcom game at MS conference.

10. No online paywall for PS4. Unconfirmed.

11. No DRM info for PS4.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=581089

There is worse (!) - Paywall for single player games (hence regular online checks not just about authentication).

Alleged fears about leadership within MS XBox division over their deafness to the possible backlash.

Looks like 'CBoat' was right about World of Tanks (I know it says 'Banks' above, just copy & pasted another's translation ;)

EDIT: Price mentioned by MS:

$499+tax / Euro 499 / £429

(+ your Live sub presumably..)

Not bad, but not great.

Most of the games shown I have ZERO interest in, but it may sway some. Sadly, none of their current issues where addressed, which is no surprise. So I'm still a big fat NO on ever getting this console.

I was reading reaction to price over at Gamefaqs, and one guy said Sony should pull a PS1/Saturn, and announce a $399.99 price tag to just completely kill the ONE. I thought that would so cool

I'm a big Killer Instinct fan from back in the day, but Rare hasn't made a good game since before they left Nintendo(IMO), and most of the staff who help do the original are long gone. So this was very cool to see, but I don't expect much in the long run, but it's good fan service. If I ever happen to get a ONE, I'm sure this would be a game to pick up.

They also showed a new Panzer Dragoon game, so that was interesting as well, but not enough for me to go to the "Darkside".
