Microsoft XBOX ONE

Well I'm not sure this will actually be the case, but a story on Engadget is claiming that to sell a used game, you must do so through a retailer who is connected to a MS database. When it's sold MS will remove access from the old user and give it to the new one. MS will also take a cut for itself and the publisher.

Sounds absolutely ridiculous. First of all , if a used game sells for $50 , you would be lucky to get $20 from the retailer once they factor in their cut , MS cut an the publishers cut.

As a used game buyer it's going to make used games way more expensive.

Here's the story: http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/24/xbox-one-used-game-rumor/

Yeah that would kill independent sellers, private re-sellers and international sales stone dead. I think the disc is an illusion, and it'll cause chaos - a lot of people (mainly parents I suspect) will be well used to trading/returning games for their demanding offspring. They won't understand this at all when it hits them.

Time to vote with our pockets.

I for one will be waiting for both next gen machines to have been out a few months before laying down any cash.

Microsoft must high if they think this is going to fly with anyone, anywhere?

Truth be told, I don't buy used all to often, but I sell used games all the time through Ebay. Due to the recent economic situations, I have actually been borrowing more recent games from friends. At the end of the day, I will just wait for any and all games to drop down to the $20 dollar or less category like I do now.

So for the most part, this is pretty much Microsoft going all "digital", but squeezing it in through the back door right? So their telling everyone you can buy/sell used games, but not in any real beneficial way. I can tell they just want a HUGE piece of the Apple pie, but this aint the way to get it, and unless your actually Apple, dumbshit like this doesn't work unless your under their spell(I know millions are).

I know everyone, including Nintendo and Sony would rather go all digital if they could, and I know Microsoft is planning for this system to last at least 10+ years, but consumers aren't ready to make this leap, not yet. Forcing it down their throats just aint cutting it. Stuff like this was rumored early on and most industry insiders said it would only work if Sony & Microsoft did it together, otherwise consumers would just go with the one who didn't force the issue.

It's been reported, that the WiiU sales went up by 800+% on Amazon UK after the "One" reveal. I'm not sure how factual this news was, or if it had to do with other factors, but Nintendo's stock rose a few points as well. For me personally, I was uninterested in the WiiU currently due to lack of games, but after seeing this clusterfuck, I see myself getting a WiiU way sooner than I planned. The competition just isn't offering anything to make my PS3 and 360 obsolete. My Wii has long since been retired(online and graphics ran their course), but the WiiU would go nicely along side my current consoles, and I wouldn't be missing anything really.

I'm waiting for E3, to see what all 3 players pull out of their bag of tricks, but at this point, I can't see Microsoft doing anything to improve their situation(they can only spin the truth so many ways, before it blows up in their faces). If Sony is smart, and if they had any plans for any of this dumb shit, they will scrap it, and go forward as if it never happened. Nintendo is in the best position IMO, as they have no issues with used games, their console is BC, way cheap, and they have a year head start on software(and hopefully closer to a price drop). As long as they don't do something beyond stupid, I can already see them winning E3. At least Nintendo is still all about games.

Microsoft is clearly trying to get a piece of every other market expect for games, and clearly this is a HUGE fail to everyone except them. Oh well, they'll see it when "one" is the only system sitting on store shelves during the holidays.

Yep, the disc is an illusion, you own nothing, but pay full retail! Or, to put it a more nuanced way, MS retain part-ownership of the game - but still demand full retail for it. This defies what everyone understands about 'ownership' and property rights, and will cause mayhem.

There's something vaguely similar in Ireland, 'artists' managed to lobby for a claim to a chunk of any resale of their works. So you buy a painting in an auction house or gallery, and if you dare to sell it on at any point later, they expect a (sizeable) cut of the resale value. The logic is non-existent. If you sell something, you part company with it, otherwise it's only rental. Everyone but themselves thinks it preposterous, and auction houses just refuse to log details of the works or buyers, so they don't honour it anyway.

Of course you CAN'T ignore it when it requires MS authentication.

Can you imagine if someone hacks their database or finds a way of generating a valid key (or pinching someone elses - the incentive is massive).

If Sony is smart, and if they had any plans for any of this dumb shit, they will scrap it, and go forward as if it never happened.
That's the state of play isn't it? Go with the existing model (360,PS3) and murder MS, or do likewise and see what happens.

E3 is going to be a bloodbath, this is going to be huge for all sorts of reasons!

E3 is going to be great for sure, I'm getting my popcorn ready now

I really think Sony has a similar plan, but they should really rethink it at this point. Obviously they would have had to plan for this long ago in the same way Microsoft has(dealing with 3rd parties, etc). Their option is to roll with the flow, and help Microsoft change the public opinion, or try and bury MS, and then go this route at a future point.

Nintendo is the definite "wildcard" in all this. If Sony teams with MS, they run the risk of running everyone to the WiiU, and then it's last gen all over again. If they go their own way, and scrap any of this "digital" crap, they run the risk of MS getting the lions share, and they may not be able to compete in the future.

I really don't know what MS long term plans are. On most gaming sites(gamefaqs, neogaf, etc) over the last few years, most gamers are of the PS3 or WiiU and less for the 360(the same seems to be happening with the PS4, WiiU and One).

Every since MS started Kinect, they seem to care less about average gaming, and more about bringing in the masses. That's not a bad idea, but between tablets, iPads, phones and such, there is just less reasons to go with "windows" or any MS based systems. I just don't see them getting the amount of consumers on board to make this long term profitable.

This is incredible. You may want to sit down (Microsoft would clearly like to glue you to the sofa).

MS have plans to award achievement points for...

watching TV. No wonder this thing seems so centered on dominating your viewing material.

No, I am being serious. Looky:

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-05-24-microsoft-applies-for-patent-on-tv-achievements

So they can promote TV shows you might otherwise avoid, and, of course, advertisements, by promising points for watching them. Kinect can make sure you're not fibbing, and by getting you to say keywords like 'Coke!' when prompted you could earn more.

Is this as insidious as it looks? Or more so?

some unrelated but intriguing commentary. There's lots of it:

Hey Asmo,

I actually saw this earlier, but I just couldn't bring myself to list it here. I didn't have the space or the time to discuss this properly.

Is MS trying to go out of business or something?

Chris

Whatever they're thinking they sure are cooking up a perfect storm for themselves. This all has the potential for SOME kind of scandal to engulf them disastrously, what with always-on mic and camera in the living room, prompting kids to demand products so they can 'show' them to the TV to earn gamer points, and enslaving them to advert slots as if they were TV shows...

It's like Poltergeist is actually happening!

"They're heeeeeere!"

I hope Mircosoft will now realize what they are doing is not what people want.

After the Win 8 debacle this could lead to some real disaster.

Something insidious is subtle, usually gradual. An insidious plan is one that you don't see happening until it is too late. This is just blatant and stupid. :p

I'd be willing to bet that they will still make a buttonne of profit and declare the process a success. Whether right or wrong, the internet mouthpiece tends to still be a minority, and most people will likely buy into it because they don't know any different. This is why MTV continues to air non-music, it's why EA continues to release game after game with poorly implemented DRM, it's why BoA is able to foreclose on people that don't even have mortgages with them, and it will be why Microsoft will be able to charge full retail price for a "used" game.I made myself sad now.

There're some other crazy suggestions about other 'features' to be revealed at E3, I'm reading on various forums. Given the above, I'm inclined to believe them, though no source yet. Stuff like:

If a stranger walks into the room, the Xbox One will ask you to identify them and add them to it's records.

When you watch a movie, if Kinect detects too many people in the room for the licence agreement, it will refuse to play.

Huzzah! Big Brother is coming to play !

Even better: you cannot even watch a movie if Kinect is not connected and pointing towards you ;)

People might put real sized dummys of themselves in the room to fool them ;)

But think of all the great possibilities...

You could earn money if you just put kinect into your bedroom and leave it on all the time.

Finally! Spyware that you have to pay for and takes up physical space in your living room.

This is human progress :(

Incredibly, no - apparently it can detect heart rate.
