Beta Mame4All Beta

Great release:)
Thanks a lot and keep up the good work!!
Playing cps2 games with the pandora would be amazing.
I have a question: what mame romset is the best to use? Tried
some games (donpatchi, dodonpatchi, pulstar) but they didn't
work:-( all the other OLDER roms worked fine. And what about
NeoGeo games? If we have cps2 games running, i think neogeo
maybe also possible. Or am i dreaming??
Thanks for your hard work- pandora is getting better and better
cheers

What games have audio problems? I tried PacMan but it sounds absolutely perfect on my unit
I've had no trouble with Pac-Man either. Donkey Kong Jr is the best example, but you sometimes need to wait a while before it starts popping. I posted some more details on the dev forum here.
On mine Pac-Man pops but it does it in the background sound and when you eat the power pill etc. It does it once in a while and is harder to pick out than other games due to the nature of the sounds.

As far as DKjr while it does do it be aware that these DK games with samples did pop once in a while even on the GP2X when the sample is called. This new popping is added to that.

I use Q*bert as an example as it will do the popping in the background even if a sample is not played. It is odd in this game as sometimes the popping will get quieter then come back louder as you play.

Just use GnGeo all NeoGeo games work with that.

Don't most of the more advanced games require more horse power to run under mame, than with their own dedicated emu? It would be great to have everything under one roof of course, but if less time and effort can be used porting a cps2/3, NeoGeo, or Laserdisc specific emulator, I think it would be better going that route than trying to max out mame.
Yes running those under MAME usually needs more grunt.

I kind of like dedicated emus for NeoGeo, CPS1,CPS2 etc anyway. Why? Because if I want to play a CPS2 game then I load the CPS2 emu and it only shows CPS2 games and I don't need to scroll through the huge MAME game list to pick it out. Plus the performance is generally smoother and you can use less clock and gain battery life.

Yeah, I just gave the bootleg a go and it worked fine.

Hey Steve,

What do you think about adding ESC (Q+Fn) to quit out of the emulator when in the rompicker as well as L+R? I prefer that way, other emus seem to follow that method.

CPS1 runs beautifully at 500MHz. I thought there were some CPS2 games supported already but, looking more closely, the code that's in there for CPS2 emulation isn't used by MAME4ALL. I will definitely look into including it though - there are some cracking games on that platform.
Awesome. :D Thanks very much for the response.

CPS1 (and CPS2) stuff needs a bit of an overclock in MAME 0.106 (which I've stuck with for now), but I might have to switch over to MAME4All now, I think. I have a quick question, though - are any CPS2 games supported?

It looks like the CPS2 code is just some kind of test driver. I managed to get SFA3 to start, but you can only do a sound test. Nice to fiddle with, but it's not playable. Something to work on in a future release maybe, but I think I'll get back to the controls and stuff for now.

CPS2 on the GP2X was kick ass, and the emu had a great frontend and everything(pics, rom info, ect). Hopefully it can just be ported over with a few tweeks to take advantage of the Pandora's resolution, keys, and processing power.

It was one of the first things I tried with Ginge, as CPS2 had some of the best arcade games of all time. I believe the front end worked, but the games wouldn't run. Oh well, someday! ;)

Great, thanks guys - tried the bootleg before but still nothing, will see if I can find another.

I've tried this Dodonpachi that everyone keeps talking about :p

It works but screen is upside down? Tried the rotation, which only changes it 90 degrees. Has anyone else got this working the normal way up?

Try repairing moonwlkb.zip in Romcenter, worked for me....

This is really weird. It was upside down in an earlier release, so I added a couple of lines to flip it right way up. Now, despite that code still being in there, it's upside down again. Not sure what's going on - maybe something gets saved in the config to cause it to get flipped twice or something. Anyway, I changed the code (again) and it looks like it's fixed (again) so it'll be in the next release.

Cheers Steve

EDIT: Just found another game which dumps back to the desktop Wonderboy III - Monster Lair (Bootleg)

EDIT 2: Found a rom with popping noise right from the CPU/ROM check, Smash TV (Rev 4.00), gets louder in game too.

EDIT 3: Shinobi (Bootleg) also dumps back to desktop (Please let me know if you no longer require this info!!)

EDIT 4: Rampage: World Tour (rev1.3) dumps to desktop

EDIT 5: NBA Jam T.E (rev 4) has the popping/bad quality sound issue

That game works for me - or do you mean it dumps back to the desktop after you quit it? (this happens occassionally with MAME4ALL for me, too)

Yep, after you quit :) Game works fine

Just relating some games here to known problems. Not sure if Steve still needed to know or not...

Sure, keep 'em coming. I can't promise they'll all be fixed but the more examples the better.

Will give it a blast, tried that too, but will keep trying, cheers :)

A lame workaround would be --

When mame-fe invokes mame, have it instead invoke mamerun.sh which in turn invokes mame, and then invokes mame-fe again and exits; this way an external agent is in charge of the invocations, so if mame crashes, mame-fe will run. (You'd have to drop the execl(mame-fe) from mame proper though, but probably a once line change. You could probably fake it by just renaming 'mame' to 'mamebin' and putting the sh-script stuff in 'mame', and then the one line change.

Or you could track down the crash in free()/etc as it releases, but that sounds like work ;)

I think the acceptable term is "pragmatic" workaround ;-) I will probably end up doing something like this, or fork() before exec() and wait(), or break the cycle and have a loop in the PND launcher script.

Yep, and considering the crash is on exit anyway, it's probably not really worth the effort.
