Lcd Screen? That Is Too Old-Tech For What The Pandora Can Do.

why couldnt they just go with OLED? i hear it has a response time that is vastly superior to LCD, and good black levels. sounds like it's the only the only true competitor display type that the CRT has yet seen (if size and weight weren't issues)! even the 2ms LCD's ghost too much for me. now i have to wait until they make an OLED pandora as i just cant stand regular LCD technology. now if this thing has like 120hz and blanks the screen after each frame, that might make it worthy as that'd probably get rid of ghosting.

If I was preordering a Pandora, I'd be glad that LCD is being used because of OLED burn-in and degradation of the blue emitters.

LCD has come a long way, the pandora doesn't seem to suffer too much from ghosting from the vids I've seen, though evildragon does seem to prefer a slightly washed out look! OLED looks nice, but it's got it's own problems - I'm happy that Pandora will have LCD.

Why doesn't some tosser suggest a plasma screen, and a mini nuclear generator for power? Actually let me be that tosser - why can't it happen? People are already willing to fry their brains with radiation from mobile phones, and a small plutonium rod could provide years of battery life, and plasma screens are nice to look at.

On the other hand, if you have trouble getting blobs of moulded plastic from one country to another and through customs, I guess bulk buying plutonium might be a tad problematical.

Really inviting trouble with a response like this. Maybe you mean "available to us" or "at a reasonable cost" but there are smartphones out with 800x480 OLEDs so its plain to see they're out there.

Yeah he probably means at a good price. OLED screens are pretty expensive right now.

I would like to see a future Pandora with it though. The current LCD is a bit ghosty (although not as bad as PSP) and the black level is not too great.

LCD or OLED, I'd like to see a future Pandora implement that fancy resistive multitouch technology (that, from memory, was a controller revision to the existing technology). There's a lot of cool stuff you could do with multitouch and pressure sensitivity.

Maybe you could post some links to suitable OLED screens then?

Samsung's Wave and Galaxy have 'Super AMOLED' screens, http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/samsung-galaxy-s-hands-on-with-video/ which are 4 inch, 800x480.
Comparison between the screen and an iPhone: http://blog.gsmarena.com/pics/10/02/best-screen-award/gsmarena_001.jpg
Video of it to show the improved readability in sunlight: http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/16/samsung-wave-shows-whats-super-about-its-amoled-display-by-goin/
But they aren't necessarily *selling* any of them.

The Nexus One uses an 800x480 3.7" AMOLED.
Samsung's Omnia II also has an 800x480 3.7" 'regular' AMOLED screen, other models have the same resolution at 3.1 and 3.3 inches.

wow, i love that pic that compares the iphone screens with LCD and OLED. that is a real black color depth on that OLED! LCD's just don't do blacks they do purple and grays and it sucks. i guess the OLEDs dont sell much better cuz people don't know what they're missing. seeing is believing!

The Nexus One screen is not really 800x480px.

That's exactly the point, there is no solution currently available.

This is about a slight size difference then? I think most people would prefer 4.0" OLED over 4.3" LCD if the OLED were any good. I think the response to Wiz's screen is proof of this.

Why yes, very much so. Now as you're all so happy to do, go back 2 years and find that screen. Since you most likely can't, can you at least get Samsung to sell you the screen they presumably developed for their own device? I'd wager probably not. The Nexus screen as I said earlier is an utter piece of junk, which really leaves you with no other option than the LCD, unless you want to settle for a significantly lower resolution.

Yeah, we will just whack another $100k on the credit card to have the moulds redesigned. Just like that.
