Here's the GP32 playing it's first Lynx game:

It's just a small amount slower than the real thing at the moment, there are no controls and no sound support.

As you can see, it really needs some screen scaling too, but that shouldn't be difficult to do.

Shame it's not going to be ready for GBAX04 :(
W@W that was FAST! This will be AWESOME when finished. The Lynx was the best handheld before the GBA.

The scaling is really easy too, it is just a straight 4:1 (double vertical, double horizontal) perfect scaling (so "sub-pixels").

MMMMmm slimeworld, Rygar, even had a great version of Robotron.

I'll just add my 'Excellent!' here.
I only own the first version of Lynx (aka 'the skateboard' 'the baseball bat' etc.) ..
Nice to be able to play Lynx games with a machine that fits in my pocket :)

I can't agree with that I think the Game Gear or Neo Geo Pocket was but anyway. Good choice squidge Batman Returns on Lynx rocks. Better than the GBA?? the GBA is garbage. Even the original had better and more fun games on it.

So many love the NGP but I really can't see what was so great about that one. Everything on it was a cartoony fighting game with small characters outlined in black it seems. The Lynx had that pseudo 3d scaling chip in it that no other handheld had until GBA. To each his own I guess.

Yeah sure lynx games "looked" better but there is what like 5 good games? NGP had gameplay by the bucket loads even though the games graphics were dodgy on a lot of games. Anyway go Lynx for now :)

Yeah, I never had a NGP. It was the dodgy graphics that kept me away. I was not into fighting games either and that is mostly what it had. I admit I am a bit of a graphics whore so I suppose I was biased.

There were actually more Lynx games than most people think. There were many good ones. The thing about the lynx is that there were some UNIQUE games, not the same old fighting and mario clones that seemed popular then. Slime world, Electrocop, Chips challenge, Crystal mines, Warbirds(really only good multiplayer) are a few.

If you didn't have one though I wouldn't expect you to get exited over it. That is the thing with emus, if you never owned the system emulated you would probably care less about it.

I have a NGPC adn yeah the games are pretty simpe but a 30-50 dollar system with some admittly wel contructed fighting games and the Cardfighters game as well as a few other really nice niche titles.

The lynx is about the same to me, tons of well made niche titles that are fun to play, but the difference is the Lynx is in mothballs somewhere while my NGPC is in a carrying case next to my GBA.

I managed to get quite a few Lynx games on the cheap towards the end of it's life but of the 20 or so I have there are only a few that are truly great... many average... and a few piss-poor.

That said, there was actually a time when I couldn't play my Lynx for fear of losing an entire weekend playing Klax or Chips Challenge. My god, I loved those games. I never did finish Chips Challenge either... Hmmm, I think I've just figured out what I'll be doing until the results of GBAX2004 come in :) .

You can't say the NGPC was poor cause of the graphics as the gameboy proved it was black and white yet the games made it good altho it was a larger screen still feels wierd not playing the games in a dot matrix mode :p

but the lynx was good i do wish atari did release 720 in the end they were and that was a great game i have the arcade here it would of been great on the lynx but oh well

1 thing i did look at was the speed of the com-lynx i dont think the gp32 is fast enough to play multi games but then again we might now be able to get a full speed with sound lynx altho it should be possible with a bit of ARM ASM i believe.

but great work squidge ;)

Only ever played the lynx a couple of time when i was at school, never thought much of the games prefered my game gear ;) But im sure ther are some little gems in there and always fun playing around with another system :) . Quite interested in playing chips challenge think i remeber having that on the amiga

So mucho respecto squidge :D

Incidentally, if anyone's in Croydon or Richmond, and wants *cheap* Lynx games, I seem to remember X-Electrical selling them at £1-£2 a pop. Admittedly, that was about 8 months ago now, but if they still have any they might be worth checking out... especially with this looming on the horizon (I'll probably buy a few just for legit emulation - they're cheap enough).

There definetly was some dodgy stuff on the Lynx, just like any system. So you may have played some of the lame stuff.

The Lynx had this cool effect where objects and/or the background could be stretched and distorted in hardware as well as the "mode 7" style scaling. You can see this in slime world, it is a cool effect. Also the first time I saw Stunn runner on the lynx the 3D effect blew me away and I was amazed that it was running on a handheld. Chips Challenge was first on the lynx and was ported to many systems.

The Lynx wasn't nearly as practical as a handheld like the NGP. I mean the lynx was bulky and sucked a set of 6 alkaline batteries dry in less than 3 hours. Actually the Lynx will be more practical now running under emulation on the GP32 than it ever was. The GP32 screen has better contrast and you don't need to carry a sack of batteries and box full of carts around. :)
