Gph: The Wiz - Official Announcement

 Just seen the price on the Wiz... only bought my F200 a couple of months back and paid nearly that price... well £100...

So should have waited... I thought the Wiz was going to be about £200 or something, guess no one knew it was coming out though. I think Ill wait for the pandora now though instead of upgrading for the little extra power the wiz gives. Ha ha nevermind...
The Pandora is the one which costs £200. The Wiz is not really providing just a "little extra power". The increase from GP2x->Wiz should be greater than the one from GP32->GP2x in most cases.

Is it that good, The old gp32 Flu screen.
Can you play it with ease, how much beter then the Gp2x screen ?
Damnzz I've got to make lots of Extra Hours for 3 systems now :)

I'll let you know once mine comes in. I've heard it looks great outdoors with the light turned off, but how it looks indoors with the light on varies depending on which unit you get (i.e. the earlier FLUs sometimes had a problem with dust getting on the light guide and lighting up whenever the light was turned on).

shit i just had the biggest epiphany ever!

alright so one of the major draw-backs of producing a high-quality commercially advertised open-sourced handheld machine, or any handheld is the lack of games upon launch. i think we may have been duped, as gph probably dumped the crappy battery/processor/RAM/storage gp2x onto us to turn a quick profit, and make a game base for a later device that would actually be worth something (the wiz). im sure most of you are okay with this, but they probably could have made the wiz for the same price YEARS AGO! they just wanted us to do all of their dirty work first.

(but i could be wrong)

Hardly, the Pollux wasn't out when the GP2X came out.

The GP2X was and still is "worth something" if you just want to play older games. It has a much bigger screen as well.

Nice conspiracy theory but the tinfoil hat was on too tight.

I say, bring back the BLU screen!

That was a good size and brightness. (the PSP-3000 screen might be nice.. the PSP screens are good, but a little over-ghosty; but their size is sweet, barring the widescreen aspect DaveC hates.)

2.8 is a little small imho..

PDAs and iphone and so on have nailed screen sizing for a long trime, but they're going for ultra portable here, somethign that fits in your pocket alongside your phone :p

jeff
The BLU screen was too dim and the colors were very washed out. I don't think you remember it exactly.

The PSP 3000 will be better now that the ghosting is fixed. Yeah the PSP resolution kind of sucks for emulators but even at 1:1 the image will still be bigger than it will be on the small Wiz screen.

Now that the Wiz will likely kill all GP2X emu development maybe it is time to look at the PSP again for emus (with the 3000)? I wonder what the speed difference will be? The PSP is 333 and the Wiz 500 but the PSP is better hardware so they may be pretty even?

2.8" is way too small. I dusted off a Giz that I had in mothballs and looked at the screen size (same as Wiz) and it looked *tiny* compared to even the GP2X. Too bad they ruined what would have been a decent system. At least they fixed the goofy d-pad button thing.

I'd still love to see any evidence of this. So would around 80 people who have now emailed me asking for videos/FPS stats. Please give us distributors some numbers or it's a very hard sell to make, not giving this stuff out is damaging the Wiz sales. With the GP2X we had videos/stats very early on which drove the sales really well.

The MMSP2+ (360Mhz) was SLOWER than the GP2X@266Mhz. This is why I'm worried about the Pollux performance in the Wiz.

Have GPH told you not to answer these questions? What's the deal?

As DaveC has said the Pollux was not available that long ago.

First, I'm basing this purely off of the numbers increase in the specifications. I am only guestimating.

Second, the MMSP2+ is slower than the GP2x@266Mhz. Was this not what Squidge claimed could run SquidgeSnes at pretty amazing speeds back when you were looking to use this SoC ;)

Third, the reason no one knows the answer to these questions is probably that people aren't wasting their time testing SquidgeSnes or whatever on the Wiz and are actually using their time to do more worthwhile things and hence no one has the numbers or videos.

For God's sake, we know you think the Wiz screen is too small but do you have to remember it every time you write a post about the Wiz? <_<

DaveC said:
Now if only they put in a decent sized screen that lasts they would have a winner.
DaveC said:
If they were I would extract that post stamp size micro screen that GPH put in like a rotten tooth.
DaveC said:

DaveC said:
The ratio is then the same, and the image is MUCH bigger than it will be on the wee wiz screen.
DaveC said:
Well you wouldn't need to increase the size that much if you know what you are doing. The iPhone is smaller than a Wiz and it has a 3.5" screen. If you look at the Wiz you see a big border around the screen. Instead of having that it should fill out the area more. If you had to increase the length by 4 or 5 mm that wouldn't hurt anyone.

Thank you for composing that list. Maybe DaveC can now reach the stage of "acceptance". Acceptance of the screens size, that he cannot change this and that no one but him cares.

Alright, mine came in today, and I gotta say, it does look sweet in the sunlight. Turning the front-light on kind of gives everything a blue tint, and there are some barely visible diagonal lines, but as soon as you get into the game, you don't even notice. I say it's worth it. :D

Don't you think a really worthwhile thing to do would be to make sure it is actually significantly faster than the GP2X, you know, since GPH are taking money for it already?

As a distributor I'm anxious about the fact you won't seem to answer this issue. Could you run the SNES emulator?

As for the MMSP2+, yes at first it did seem very fast until the framebuffer was brought in to play, at which point the thing bottlenecked like an hour glass and the 360mhz meant nothing.

Also how is the flash performance? Fast? Slow? Boot up times? Any basic info to give customers?

These are all fair questions which have been put against the Pandora, but I cannot get answers anywhere for the Wiz, yet money is changing hands right now. I don't want to have to deal with serious customer anger in a couple of months or so. I'm just trying to avoid repeating the GP2X F100 mess all over again.

I'm not the only distributor or customer feeling this. It would be much better for the Wiz if these facts were on the table now :) We got the Dpads changed which is fantastic, can we squeeze out the above info too do you think?

I cannot believe they didn't send their biggest (only?) European distirbutors prototypes... crazy. Do they really hate you, craigix? ;)

I can't tell much since I've not had much time to test so far. But I quickly compiled my game "Wumbo's Adventure" for the WIZ, and w/o any optimizations (no blitter, no double buffering, no HW acceleration whatsoever) it runs much smoother than on the GP2X. So, yes it _is_ powerful.

It seems to be good but it doesn't rescale properly and finding compatible games could be tricky. Check this gp32spain thread.

;) Yeah I think Ill be holding out for the Pandora when it comes, instead of upgrading twice. Ha ha I am tempted though atm by the wiz reading some things about it.

Him and me, then. I don't like small screens much either.

Have you seen the image in the other topic which shows both a GP2x and Wiz? The screen isn't that much smaller yet the overall size is MUCH smaller. I mean if it was the same size as the GP2x but with a smaller screen, then yes, it would be stupid. However, it is much smaller than the GP2x so the screen is just fine at that size.

Edit: Added some clarification
