GPD Win (x86 Computer / Palmtop)

He explained what the problems were with emulators; it wasn't about getting them, it was about configuring them.

It wasn't about getting them, at 5:13 ish he says getting emulators onto this device is going to be a pain.

The configuring I can't quote on as I don't own a GPD but I can't believe it would be harder on a device with physical controls than on a phone with no controls.

I used to use our laptop on the TV for playing emulators and when you select 1 screen the laptop screen is turned off, I would think windows 10 works the same way.

BUT I should shut my gob, the more people that moan about this device the better for the Pyra. :)

Looking through the comments on The 8-Bit Guys video people are complaining about the price but really don't get the idea of what this device is about.

Also offering suggestions for alternative devices that just don't offer the same functionality (Tablet & Blue-tooth Keyboard ????).

Totally reminds me of the Pandora and more recently the Pyra.

Well, how about Ashens? I mean, he did a 40 minute review of Pandora...
Also maybe LGR?

I've not watched the Ashens review in a while, but I would assume he did get an SD card with loads of stuff on it already. I think he did it before the repo and PND Manager were things. That's what I meant (though re-reading it I may have missed out one or two 'nots' somewhere).

Huh, who knows. I mean, he never says whether all the stuff was preloaded or not. He certainly added his own roms and adf's and such. But to be fair, I think compared to GPD Win, OpenPandora config is rather trivial. Or maybe I just spend too little time with Windows...

I won't lie, I'm a big fan of David Murray (The 8-Bit Guy), but he disappointed me with this video. The lack of his usual curiosity, being on the Win10 hate train, feels like a rushed video. I'm used to much much better coming from him.

Maybe with the Pyra, we should package it with a manual explaining what the device is meant for, how it came to be and how it's used. Then add a "RTFM" mention when sending these off to reviewers. Maybe a picture of thumb typing, using the stylus and such on the cover would help greatly in making people figure this all out.
What justifies its price is its reliability (including battery length), features packed in (4G, offline GPS, multiple USB ports...) and useability-to-size ratio. It's more of a retrogaming micro-PC and indie/geeky PDA than a glorified handheld, and we need people to acknowledge it before trying to sell it to them.

It just shows, that the GPD WIn is a niche device. Some people just can't be bothered with having to configure stuff on their computers. That is why not many people go with linux, I guess.
And for the GPD Win you need to reinstall windows and configure a lot of things to have it run smooth. But once you have done that, it is an excellent device.

Also I bought and installed Xpadder for a few bucks, which solves basically all issues concerning mouse/joystick input for any game.
But again, that program is not included in the original purchase.

So the GPD Win is great once you set it up correctly, but I guess you can hate on any device - even an iphone - if you want to.

If you have to set it up first, it fails to deliver to the target audience (Windows 10 users).
From what I've seen the OpenPandora is way more user friendly and easier to set up thanks to its repo and PNDmanager.
Prior to releasing a system it's not only important to ask "Does it boot?" but also "Does it work?".

Only if Pyra is as friendly as the OpenPandora (which will), then we can compare. Elsewise, Pandora and Win's specs are not even remotely close.

Especially when you consider Pyra's capabilities and features that are not even present on the Win.

- Precise digitizer screen with stylus
- Over 1TB local on-device storage capable (32GB eMMC + 256GB microSDXC + 512GB SDXC + 512GB SDXC)
- Optional 4G data/phone version
- Lanyard/strap connector
- Debian Linux
- Sane keyboard layout
- Two USB 2.0 host ports AND microUSB 3.0 OTG AND a charging port
- Optimized emulators
- Stereo speakers
- Passive cooling
- All day usage battery life (and then some)
- Wonky chip

The Win does beat the Pyra on outright CPU horsepower and has a manually switched fan and is missing a speaker to prove it.

Which one wins in comparison depends entirely on what factor(s) you include in the comparison.

At $300 the Win won with me but if it was $400 like it is now on Amazon I'd not have gotten it. I still hope to pick up a 4g/4gb pyra as I feel it's worth the higher price.

Interesting article. But I wonder how well the intel graphics driver for Linux runs on the Z8700 GPU. Have you already installed Linux on your GPD Win?

GPD are now selling replacemewnt batteries for the GPD WIN . Which is good in case the battery ever dies

Pretty decent price: $14.50 for the 6700mAh GPD WIN battery
