GPD Win (x86 Computer / Palmtop)


Small update today, looks like the left stick will operate as the mouse wheel in mouse mode
Does that mean the functions in mouse mode are fixed?

Pandora has the nub config which allows setting one stick as mouse wheel. But it is an adjustable configuration.
 
Here are some tests done on a Fanless Z8700 GPD WIN prototype . Production WINs will have a fan and probably use the Z8750

Mouse mode works well by the looks of things.

I think you need flash - but nothing spectacular to be seen on those videos.
On Photoshop CS6, they simply load a 50MB file (which takes a while, but that's expected) but don`t do anything else except for showing navigation through the layer window. So they didn't show working with Photoshop.
Autocad 2016 looks pretty slow, and Autocad is 2D (not 3D), but I never expected it to run fast, as Autocad is meant to run on a workstation, so it's anything but optimized for such small processors :)

Well, Word isn't anything that I didn't expect to run nor a VMWare workstation.

The mouse mode seems to work, but they often overshoot and you need to slowly go back and forth, etc. That always was my issue with sticks or those tiny red nubs on laptop keyboards when using them as mouse, that's why I prefer nubs. :) But I can fully imagine that there are others who really can use these sticks well.

They seem to show off the x86 processor. Did you notice that they didn't show any emulators? (Well, I wouldn't, too.)

Emulators should run okay, why wouldn't they?
But yes, mobile x86 is neat in some cases, and I want to try doing some video editing with Edius on the prototype. Edius is pretty optimized and runs okay on Atoms as well, but seeing Photoshop and Autocad here makes me fear it's not yet enough.

They have already shown emulators including PS2 emulation. They have also shown many Windows games . Those tests were done on a Z8500 test unit.

This was done on a Z8700 test unit - albeit fanless. Their first Z8700 test unit I think. This was also the first time they showed it for it's UMPC offering following requests by people.

Production units are planned to use the Z8750 and have a fan
 
I'd love to know the battery time of it. I'm a bit scared that it will only run a couple of hours with demanding games.
It's really time someone develops a miracle battery :)

People don't seem to have any problen when a gam drains out their mobile phones within an hour (Pokemon GO). So the battery drain may be not an real show stopper in case of the GPD Win for the masses. And there are still power banks that can rescue the situation. Big Battery is important but you should never sacrifice everything else to achive that. ;)
 
Unfortunately the only "miracle battery" I've read about in development recently was one that could be recharged any number of times without losing capacity.
 
There were ones I've read about with graphite or carbon nanotube mesh layers in the polymer that was supposed to radically increase capacity and charging speed. I haven't heard much about it since then as far as if they can mass produce them or not.

I think with tesla's new world class lipo manufacturing and R&D facility, I think we should be seeing some major advancements in that area in the near future.

Well, I never understood those Pokémon Go crazyness at all... but even if it's not a show stopper for anyone, it certainly is an issue for myself, as I usually only take one handheld with me when I'm going on a train or plane trip, so it should at least hold 6 - 8 hours.
 
Having to carry USB power banks around defeats the purpose of a portable device so battery life is indeed one of the most important things for me.
Pokémon Go made people of my age around here go into the park again... only to stare at their smartphones. ><° I don't understand this culture.

I'm quite wondering which one will run out of battery first if both the Pyra and WIN run the same software.

Maybe in one of your test you can compare diablo 2 arm port on the Pyra vs the x86 one on the Win, and after that you can try Diablo2 exagear+ wine on Pyra and the x86 on the Win.

It would give us an idea of the battery life!

I'm not sure that demanding game on Pyra would be the same on the WIN.
 
I don't think emulated vs native would be fair to the machine emulating. I think a software title that has a native binary for both architectures, and also wasn't some cherry picked application that had optimized performance for one and not the other.

Try to find an intensive app that is both arm and x86, Windows and Linux.

Minecraft actually comes to mind

ptitseb's 3D ports like Jedi Knight 2, etc... come to mind. Hopefully we'll get some of those for the Pyra as well.
 
Don't those use GLshim? Translation layers might also skew things a bit due to slightly more work.

In fact I would stay away from anything that is OpenGL / GLes. Maybe something that uses vulkan because it's supposed to be universal cross platform.

Edit: checked vulkan wiki page, should support both GPUs in both devices.
