GPD WIN MAX ANNOUNCED

The product they teased is the Pocket 2 Max . A new product they will launch this year. They will also launch the WIN Max this year as well . Two different products

Details of the Pocket 2 Max are on the gpd_devices discord. in the new gpdpocket_2_max section

The pocket was never really pocketable in any of my pockets except maybe the seat pockets in the back of my car, and maybe the pockets in my cargo pants. Certainly none of my commonly worn clothing would allow me to carry it without taking a bag.

I'm happy with my Nokia 6310i, beats every modern Phone-device in Battery time easily.

There was a little article on notebookcheck about the GPD Win MAX, they say it could include a Vega 8 graphics chip which would beat the usualy used Intel integrated GFX unit almost towards the 4x, nice.
I'm also very curious about the final case design, we only have teasers yet but I'm sure GPD will not disappoint. :)

Comments:

If this is a sneak preview of possible case design for the Max, I have the following observations:

There is no L3R3 buttons which indicates possibly that thumbsticks may be clicky. However, the appearance of the shoulder buttons appear to be quite thin.

The spacing of the ports on the back and what appears to be a full size HDMI port next to two full size USB ports and a USB-C indicates that the unit itself may actually be a couple of inches wider than the current devices. Perhaps 1 to 2 inches wider. About the same size as a GPD Pocket. The hinge on the screen also appears to be two pieces.

Just using approximation of sizes, I'd say that this makes the device at least an inch or two wider than the current GPD Win/Win 2. This may mean that the keyboard may actually be larger as well, which might mean micro-typing (As you would on say, a Gemini Unit, or some of the previous HP Windows CE palmtops). Considering the sneak preview we've had regarding some of the prototype internals and tolerances, I'd say it will be a fair bit bigger but still hand-holdable.

I'd be concerned of the following: Weight (The GPD Win 1 actually gets a little heavy after a short while, and I haven't tried a GPD Win 2 yet), comfort (It seems a bit thin, considering the shoulder buttons, might mean hand cramps) and whether or not hands obstructing the bottom grille might cause issue with airflow to the two fans that we know may be in it.

But I'm eager to see where this goes! Personally, I would like to see more smaller, pocketable devices like the GPD Micro PC. Something that doesn't necessarily need nearly that beefy hardware, but low cost units that could be coupled to something like a portable monitor, mouse and keyboard for a more comfortable setup, or for use on the go. I'd like to see a device that could just be slotted into a dock and gives you HDMI/DP, USB for mouse and keyboard and a portable monitor for when you want to use it as a desktop PC, or just take it from the dock when you want to be on the go.

Apologies for the vagueness of my first video. Comparing sizes to the Smach was two-fold, it was a nod and wink that the Max was using v1605b and also to set expectations to how large the Win Max will be.

There are lots of things still in flux atm with the Max so sharing a bunch of details I know but they might change later on.

Having said that there were a few things that I had requested and GPD has accommodated almost every one.

Perhaps there is still hope for a feature of eDP to be used but because there is an adapter in play don't count on it. I really tried fighting for it but because GPDs pipeline is fairly JIT, they would have to source an eDP panel that is:

A.) Available at a good cost at low quantity
B.) Meets the reqs of the panel.

Sorry to not be explicit but it would be fairly easy to sleuth out what *feature* of eDP I'm talking about

Again, perhaps through a whole bunch of hope, a proper eDP panel is found. But right now I would anticipate that a MIPI panel will be the end result and as such, those eDP features cut off.

I think more "official" news is still 2-3 months out.

They do? Wow, not bad for a (chinese) company.
I'm actualy really interested in how GPD thinks about replacable batteries in general. This alone would make their devices even more reliable. Do you have any information about that topic?

I've had that discussion with the CEO several times in the past. They are not up for it. I forget the reasoning as it was a while ago now.
Doesn't mean they wont ever change their mind, but that's what it is as of back say 6 months or so ago

Ah, thanks for that info. I guess we are not the only customers that would like to see replacable Batteries, maybe they change their mind if more people requesting that feature. ^^

That Max mockup above is not based on the actual Max keyboard. The Max keyboard is a lot different to that, and it also has less rows of keys.
The mockup also seems too tall because of the extra key rows.
