GPD WIN 3

Well, HDMI On the Pyra is still work in Progress, not even my Shiny (not that new anymore) PreePreeOrder First Batch Edition Pyra got working HDMI Yet,
I would suspect the Win 3 uses just standart HDMI Drivers vor Windows..

The Pyra is thought enough to damage my Leg Muskles when i fell from my Bike a few weeks ago, i wonder how this would work whit the GPD WIN 3 ^^

I take it that's a prototype Pyra, cos that grey looks lighter than the gunmetal grey you can order the unit with, plus it had a black bezel from a different plastics run.

I have one of the oldest prototypes available and one of the few of those that still works.
It serves me well for typing things and browsing, but everything else is not really functional.
I don't even have speakers in my unit.
And sometimes it freezes.

I fore sure will get a fully working Pyra at some point in time.
For now I want to hold back and let the preorderers come first.
Still I'm for that day when I finally get a Pyra with mobile internet and can finally retire my smartphone.

Back to GPD WIN 3.

60% battery, 3h 50min Wii emulation (Sengoku Basara 3 Utage, 60 fps, no enhancement except 1x anti aliasing).
The screen is to small and 2x rendering is not worth it. I don't see any difference.
That is fantastic battery life.

I don't plan to play too demanding games except heavily modded Skyrim (but that one docked mostly).
So for my gaming needs that device covers it all.

Now let's hope it does not break after a year or so.
Unfortunately GPD devices are not reliable.
My Pyra still workes, only some random freezes.
Both of my Pandoras still work like day one, even the batteries are nearly in perfect shape after daily use for many many years.
That is why I would choose the Pyra over the GPD any time if I had to choose.
That reliability is astonishing. If I have one device that never failed me it's the Pandora.

Instead of enjoying my device I punished myself and installed Windows and Manjaro Linux as dual boot on a new 2TB SSD.
It took me almost the whole day to do that.
Now it's working.
Windows is stripped down and everything not needed got removed.

Touchscreen, sound and wifi does work on Manjaro.
Arch even has a Wiki page for GPD WIN 3 and an AUR package with drivers.

GRUB2 and the login screen are still rotated by 90° because of the portrait screen.
It's not nice but not a big deal.
I rotated the screen via XFCE. Maybe there is a more global way to do that.

Hopefully the fan control will be as good or better than on Windows.
My laptop fan is louder on Linux I thing than on Windows.

And I have no battery status indication.
Maybe I just have to add it to the status bar.

I'll go to bed now. Linux is only the default installation right now.
It'll surely take me some more hours to get it set up and install all the stuff I have installed on my laptop.

Probably not the right place to ask/answer this question, but how did you go about doing that? Would be nice to be able to apply the same

GPD WIN 3 is amazing <3

First I ran that one

Then I used WPD to remove all the remaining "system relevant" bloatware

I did not run blackbird.
Unfortunately it is discontinued since November last year.
Still it might work for 95% of what it is supposed to do

THANK YOU! <3

I usually also install Simplewall as firewall as it conveniently let's you choose what programs are allowed to connect to the internet.
Similar to the good old ZoneAlarm. So you can selectively prevent Windows components to phone home (unless it's absolutely necessary)

Okay, back to Linux.
Everything is set up and works like on my main Laptop.
Except 2 issues:
1. Grub is rotated by 90°
2. HDMI does not output sound

I'm really satisfied of how flawless the Linux setup was once I figured out how to setup the dual boot on a single SSD.
What took me the longest to find out was all the screen rotation.
I use "autorandr" to switch between profiles with different button combinations.

For everything gaming related I plan to use Windows, so don't expect too many reports regarding Linux.

EDIT:
Oh, by the way, I'm using the dock and a big screen 99% of my time on Linux.
Once Manjaro was installed and the gpdwin3 AUR package was installed the dock worked out of the box without any issues.

Nah.
Surely it is great at the first look.
It has one big flaw: I can not trust it.
For the moment I rate my Pyra prototype as the more reliable device.
I've seen too many GPD failures during my time at ED's shop.
Especially the battery.
I think I'll ask GPD if they will sell me a spare battery.

I try to use the GPD as my main computer and my laptop as backup and for video calls.
Hopefully it won't fail.
I barely dare to use it while plugged in or to charge it above 80% as I fear so much the battery will be broken in a few months or a year.

The other flaw is button placement. ABXY don't feel too good for me.
I hope I can find a comfortable way to play on the GPD.

The performance on the other hand is fantastic.
Also how flawless the software works.

And how good do games run under Linux, compared to the Stock Windows? better or worse? I'm curious. ^^

No idea.
I was busy setting everything up.
Did only a little Gamecube/Wii and Super Smash Flash 2 tests on Windows.

Maybe I'll do some Linux Windows comparisons later.
This month I have exams at University and want to use the Win 3 to relax myself and not to do intensive testing.
If I had more time I'd love to start a blog or YouTube channel about such things.

Oh, and I need to update this thing to be Win 3 compatible.

Gamecube: Super Mario Sunburn (Sunshine hack): 6 watt TDP
Wii: Sengoku Basara Utage: about 8 watt TDP

Great values.
That said, I did not see much difference when it comes to estimated battery life (Windows power indication).
Leaving TDP at 25 watt is about the same as limiting it to 6 watt.
It might be useful for some games or other emulators but Dolphin does not seem to be CPU hungry.

I did not use any overlay to get exact values.
For the moment the Windows power estimation is fine for me

Since I opened the Win 3 up and swapped the SSD the makes a very annoying noise.
I don't know whether that is just my imagination or not.
At least I have the impression that it was pretty silent when docked before and now does some sirring.

Today I opened it up once more and released the fan screws.
When turning it on while the back lid is removed the fan noise seems to be mostly gone.
As soon as I attached the back plate again the noise returned.

Seems like the silence is gone...
