hope the next release is soon (hopefully with unai's gpu) i saw a definite improvement in playability in most games i tested between this version and the last (even the unai version) it just feels faster and smoother.

@zottd: I'd like to hear your opinon. As you are the main programmer of this emulator and having now quite abit of experience about the power of the GP2X:
How much is possible with the GP2X, speaking about PSX emulation, will there be sound, full speed (frameskip is ok) and can may it be still portable (means: can you use batteries for longer than 30 minutes using the emulato :) ?

Thanks! I know it is the $1 million dollar question. but by now it should be visible to you how much there is t o be possible.

Greetings.
Jesus

With time, a better utilization of the second processor, and a faster Graphics core made by Unai...

It looks possible. Playably with sound and full speed movies possible.

I vote for the small and quick releases, too. It's far better than nothing. :)

Well, just to let you know that I have some pretty interesting plans on how to use the second processor. But I (and you) will have to wait until I get my GP2X :)

Skeezix is right about how the PSX handles "timings" and interrupts.
I really wanted to stay away from needing a menu system for GP2PSX, and make it as simple to pick up and use as possible. But being my first emulator project I've worked on, this seems to have been a bad choice.

Have you ever thought of making some game specific "speed hacks" to make a few games run at a better speed with sound?

For example if you wanted to make Castlevania SOTN run closer to full speed you could tailor it by cutting out all of the 3D polygon stuff that isn't used. No use in emulating hardware features that you don't need. Other game tailored "drivers" could be made too. You would then have a general emulation version that is more compatible, and a game specific version. Sounds like alot of work though.

using this method there is a guy working on a Tempest 2K emulator that runs the Jag version. It is not a Jaguar emu per say because it only emulates hardware needed to run that one game.

Not sure if possible, just a thought.

I think this was talked about before.. from what i remember the PSX still uses polygons for sprites, just "flat" ones. It pretty much uses them for most everything in a lot of games..

Since you are working on compatibility right now I guess your too busy to try and get ff9 working.

ff9 is one of my favourite games and I would love to show that, along with ff7 to a friend when I get my 2gb sd card

If not thats ok, I just want to know how I can donate to all the people working on it if possible :) Once I get some extra cash. (you, Unai, etc) Since this is such a nice addition to the 2X.

I haven't yet tried GP2psx but I just went and donated $15 to zodttd to help motivate him to make this emulator as good as possible. Everyone else should also make any small donation they can afford (don't forget Reesy and other great emu programmers!).

This is going to be excellent when frameskip is working normally and the loading pauses are eliminated :). I got into final fantasy 7 on it, though the damn thing crashed cos I caught vol+

Hey guys, I've not got round to trying this out yet (I've been a bit slack, I know, but when your job is testing sometimes it's nice to come home and use something fully functional ;)) and as a result I'm probably gonna ask a load of preiously answered questions, but oh well. Community, help me out! Of course, feel free to point me in the direction of a wiki or faq or similar, if there is one :)

Firstly, how do I compress iso/mds/mdf to .z?

Secondly I get the impression 2D games work a lot better, is that the case or am I just overlooking the obvious?

Thirdly, will GP2PSX be able to emulate the visualisations the PSone can do when playing CDs? I guess the first question really is can GP2PSX handle CD playback, PlayStation style?

Cheers guys, and thanks a hell of a lot zottd - this reason alone has made all my PSP owning friends somewhat jealous ;). They all call the GP2X a poor man's PSP. I call the PSP a sucker's GP2X ;)

there is a wiki at wiki.gp2x.org that covers a lot of things, including gp2psx. but also gp2psx comes with html documentation containing pretty detailed instructions on ripping/compressing/etc.

1. pocketiso is what everyone uses. or i guess you could try to take the videos and such out of the iso file yourself.
2. both are slow :) but seriously i think that most people only try a few games (i've only tried two, one won't work) due to the size and amount of time to rip, etc. also certain games just run slower or faster, i think it has to do with more things than just the graphics.
3.

I'm not sure if it WILL have the option to do so in future, but currently it does not have the option to play CDs, or use the visualisation from the BIOS.

@Vader: 3. I don't think you want to make ISOs out of Audio CDs to play them using the psx emu, do you? What you want is an MP3 player that supports some kind of graphical visualisation... that would be kind of cool and certainly somebody could do it, too. But this doesn't have anything to do with gp2psx... well aslong as you don't plan to connect a USB Cd-rom to your gp2x and then load the audio cds in there... which would be obviously stupid... which is in fact really unnecessary to be mentioned... which makes me want to shut up now... OMFG so much caffeine!

I guess I am going to post that as a "cool idea" in the appropriate subforum...
