Does a game deserve to be played on technical merit alone? That seems to be something this forum in general are very against. Except, of course, when it involves the GP2X.

played, yes. paid for, im not so sure. if said game supports mods and hacks and all manner of other user editable elements then i think it would be worth paying for, even if the game is crap out of the box, but if youre just gonna play it once and never touch it again then i think cost becomes an issue.
I wouldn't pay good money for a "game is crap out of the box", I buy games which are quality and worth their money by giving me many hours of enjoyment, and if a mod comes along which extends the game's life then great. Who in their right mind would buy a game just because it incorporates a type of graphic or whatever - graphics are a means to an end, they have nothing to do with making a quality game. For example - play a 1980's arcade game like Pacman, Galaga, Gradius, etc (or PC games like Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny, Doom, etc) - graphics are crap, but you will be hooked on these games and have hundreds of hours of playtime over several years. Value for money.

Cost effectiveness is perceived value. If you buy anything and use it lots and get lots of value from it, then it is cost effective and a good investment of your money. If you buy it, barely use/play it, it is expensive and a waste of money. This is true for anything, but expecially computer games.

im pretty sure that graphics where one of the biggest selling points for wolfenstein/doom.

and just about every pc game released since then. this happened because its fairly easy to come up with an original or semi-original look for a game, certainly far easier than it is to come up with an original game with decent playability. also, since websites and magazines often have screenshots the graphics are the only true part of the game people ever see before trying it out for themselves. game companies are selling a look in order to save money and effort, and its the reason (i believe) there are fewer and fewer decent games coming out each year.

I have probaly spent over 1.5 hours on the 5 minute payback demo for mac, is that selling you?

I was going to buy it for mac but then I heard of the gba version but then it never came to America. I then got a DS and had no real interest in taking a step back to gba and now I have a GP2X and I am excited.

I can say that the most fun games Ive played in a while all had crappy graphics.

Katamari Damacy.
Ouendan
Tilematch (Nice 2D though)

Yes, and I still love playing Wolfenstein 3D (on the GP2x). I must have replayed this game more than a dozen times over the last 12 years or so! Sure, games like this were once pioneering (like Doom), now look crap; but it is the sheer quality of gameplay which keeps us playing them. It is a bit like a scratchy old record of some long lost music - you ignore the pips and blips and focus on the music as it is so good. By the same token you ignore the crap graphics of Pacman and its repetiveness because you keep thinking "damn, one more play..." (and get hooked)".

I haven't heard of Katamari Damacy or Ouendan - what are they about? Any screenshots?

?!?!?!!?!?!? O_O!
Katamari Damacy (PS2, crappy graphics for a ps2 title) - Roll stuff into a ball to make stars and eventually the moon. All because your drunk father who is king of the cosmos destroyed them in a drunken hangover rage.

Ouendan (DS, Crappy graphics for a DS title, but who needs them for this amazing game):
Its all in animated manga storylines so ya, just think powerpoint.

I wasn't impressed with Payback. Graphics are poor, compared to NeoGeo games (so I know the graphics on Payback could be better), and it looked a cheap port of existing games which have been out for a while.

There are far better games on GP2x emulation than this, and free! I believe games have to be of a far better quality than this on the GP2x to warrant paying for them, given what we have at the moment for free. Sorry, just my opinion.

If you are buying vektar then I don't know what is up with you.

Vektar is an original title for the GP2X - this is a port of a game developed for a variety of existing consoles.

Back to the topic, does anyone know the name of the song / artist of the music of the second (!) demo? yes i kinda like the music ;) *takes cover*

Come on guys... A video or some screenshots would be great. I don't have a GP2X yet, and wont for at least another 2 weeks, but a video of this game to show off to other potential buyers would rock. Craig's video review helped a LOT, but this would push a lot of them over the edge if it really does look better than the GBA version (which I showed them a video of).

It looks better than the GBA version. It is running with double the resolution too.

"Worlds better" is too much. It's got more pixels, better effects and a more stable framerate than the GBA version but in the end it's more or less the same (which is NOT a bad thing!). But then, we haven't seen the final version...

Just bumping this to say that I just tried the demo, and will DEFINITLY be buying this game if the price is reasonable (which I trust it will be). it looks fantastic, and quite frankly, I like the soundtrack cuz it's pretty much my fav. type of music.

Good stuff!!

I wonder when this will finally come out and if it will be a bit smoother.

I'm wondering if any version released in North America will be right-hand side driving instead of driving on the left-hand side, like in Europe. Small point, but point of fact, I will be buying this game if I have to send away to Mars for it.

The final version is in all likelihood going to rock all our worlds.
