32gig card for $62. not bad.
Its only a class 2 but would it be good strictly for storage?

I was thinking of having my programs on my class 6 8gig and all the roms and pic and vids on this 32gig class 2. Would that work or would it be to slow?

It has 2MB/sec write and 10 MB/sec read.

I was about to post that I had gotten a Class 6 32GB Verbatim card from Amazon UK for £65 a few weeks ago, but when I went to grab the link to it, I found that the price has shot up to £82!

Yea that one at Play.com was £55 a week ago. It's gone back up to £65. Interestingly on both occasions it was £10 off the RRP, so I guess the RRP is fluctuating.

I fear the SDXC thing has got the companies in a bit of a conundrum; they probably don't want to manufacture too many more SDHC cards with SDXC compatible devices 'just around the corner'. But with no SDXC devices appearing they don't seem to want to make SDXC cards in any significant quantity either.

I'm going to grab myself a 16Gb card for now, combine it with the 8Gb I already have, and hope for prices and capacities to sort themselves out over the next 12 or so months...

Why is SD such an expensive medium?
Part of it is because flash fabricators have been hit very badly by the recession. The profits on flash media are slim, even if you move product in very large volumes, and at this time the prices can't realistically go much lower (except in cases where excess stock needs be shifted via temporary price-cuts). This is resulting in prices that are out of reach of many people, and which have risen multiple times over the last couple of years.

That's my understanding of it. :p

Thanks :)

And also AFAIK, external storage is a very fluctuating market, in terms of supply and demand, and therefore, price. I mean if you look at how the first flash drives were way more expensive than now, despite substantially larger storage they offer now.

But this SD business is overboard and th prices may be out of my (my moms) budget.

Absolutely right. And combine that with a recession and we end up with some crazy prices at times.

Well, Sony's memory is also considerably more compact. Be better to compare those to mini/micro SD.

If you want cheap, you'd have to go with compact flash. Though the "compact" is really a misnomer. :p

Huh? At what point in the last 10 years has Compact Flash been cheaper than SD?

For the normal user, 8GB is going to be more than enough storage on Pandora. Its still thousands of retro roms / image files / hundreds of mp3s if you're going to be using it for that.
So unless you know you'll be filling it p with all sorts of various media stuff, and want to make use of blazing access times, this is a cracking price for 2x4GB class 6.

who will be the first one to try a 64GB card? :) And patch the kernel to get it to work ;)

If you're in Australia, umart have Patriot 16GB Class 10 for $50, shipping for me (within Melbourne) was $7. This review of the 32GB version gives it pretty good marks for speed: http://www.ccereviews.com/reviews/patriot-memory-lx-series-32gb-sdhc-memory-card/5/
