Everything Is Blu Compatible, How About Nlu???

i got a NLU unit, 166 Mhz, still works perfectly:), alas a lot of games use dark shades and i just can't see the difference on my unit...
the latest release of the minigame project for example, extender, a lovely game, the dark blocks: barely visible, the things you gotta collect from them when you destroy them almost completely invisible, the score and counter: invisible...
the shooter in minigame proejct: the time you loose that's shown when you get hit: hardly visible...

also older things like GPgames (you know, the program that has solitair, shanghai etc...) it's menus are barely legible....

and i'm pretty often faced with such things, and even when programs have brightness control, like GPEngine, some games are still too dark to be playable (i liked the raiden X flashgame, so tried raiden on it, but it's too dark, i can't see the bullets that get shot at me in time to evade them...)

i really hope people will start making their programs nlu compatible again, cause it's pretty annoying, and after all we NLU owners are the ones that were here first ^^

 didn't knew about these graphical glitches on NLU

i was going to trade my BLU with a NLU with someone but now.. i don't know if it's a good idea anymore :(

i don't like the screen of my BLU it's a mirror in just a bit of sunlight
that's the reason i wanted to trade..

is this also with the f emulators and with DrMD? in that case i'm going to keep my BLU..

I only have a NLU, and I don't think there are any glitches, just unfortunate colour choices and brightness choices.

I plan to upgrade, but the $$$ for a BLU (in an otherwise identical GP32) wasn't worth it. Count me in for a GPX2...

yeah, i don't really see a need to upgrade either, spending all that money for a backlight...

@brandnew: an nlu isn't bad at all, but sometimes games just aren't bright enough, and that can be very annoying.... it's no disaster, not like when blu+ came out that nearly everything had graphical problems, but it's big enough to get some attention on it....

Yea, i have the same problem. I can hardly see the pictures I make for my vns game fate when I play it on my nlu but other people say they can see them fine. I am planning on lightening up all of the pictures once I finish with the game and releasing it as a nlu version.

Then, why didn`t anyone tell me at the minigame project thread that much things are barely visible??? How should I know? <_<

Instead of complaining here, you could have pm`ed me, to let me know of this problem.
Anyone with FLU/NLU wanna test new versions to tell me about the visibility? (Racemaniac?)
It`s no big deal to use brighter/more colorful sprites/fonts...

I didn't say anything because I still play the games fine. I've gotten used to the darker pictures, but it would be nice to have lighter ones.

EDIT: I will test it for you some time if you want. I will have to work it around my work on fate.

yeah, sryy i haven't posted it in your thread yet ^^
and it was just an example, most things in your project are very visible, this is not a thread to blame you or so ^^, it was just a recent example that sprung to mind ^^

I don't have any problems playing your MinigameProject Quiest. I think the colours are perfect. But, some other games/emulators are a bit dark.

And to the people complaining about the NLU being to dark in general:

Do you really expect to be able to play with a NL-handheld in dark rooms? Just make the light on or go out. ;) Different from the BLU you are able to play it outside very good.

ehh i am playing in well lit rooms, in a dark room you see nothing, ofcourse ^^

and the the minigame project games are good indeed, very playable, only extender i just can't read the score and the counter, no matter what light and how i hold my gamepark ^^, and similar for the seconds deducted when you get hit in the cornershooterthingy ^^, not really gamebreaking problems, and i love the minigame project ^^
it's not as if the minigame project is THE example of how not to make stuff for nlu units, just a recent example of problems we have to face with a lot of games :)

and lets drop the minigame project bashing, i adore it, and those 2 things i can't see (text in those both games) aren't that needed anyway ^^, the darker blocks in the extender may also become brighter, but they're still visible, that's what matters :)

I always play my nlu next to lights (usually within 3 feet in fact) and I still have problems seeing stuff. But, as they said, the minigame project is very playable. One of the worst things I have found are the vns games. I usually can't see the dark selector or load bar for warlock on firetop mountain. In my vns game fate, I can hardly see anything. But as I said before, when I finish the game I plan on making a nlu/lighter version of the game (just don't get your hopes up, I'm nowhere close to finishing the game....)

Quiest - have an option which toggles the intensity bit of the colours. With it on is good for NLU and off for the others (I think that's the way around).

For a colour (unsigned short) this sets the bit:
color |= 1; // the color ORed with 1

And this unsets it

color XOR= 1; // the color XORed with 1

You will need to look up the actual c representation for XOR because I don't know it :)

The thing is if you make something look good on the NLU it usually looks too washed out on the BLU. So who do you please? If you make it washed out for NLU users then BLU owners complain because it is too washed out. If you make it look good with good contrast on the BLU then it is dark on a NLU. It is alot of work for coders to re-draw all of the art to make it one way or the other. In an emu you can just have an option that you can togle on or off though.

Can`t do that within Fenix :D As it have to changed in the port itself (standart fxe/rte) Chui would have to do that.

redraw all the art is a is a big word, just change to colors a bit, which is easy is a lot different than totally redrawing it

and there's a huge difference between washed out colors, which just gives a not so nice picture, and invisible or barely visible things which can seriously disrupt the gaming experience

and i have to admit, if i got a light shining directly onto the screen i can see more dark details, such as the things i mentioned about the minigame project.
but then then all colors are kind of washed out due to the amount of light on the screen, and it's not exactly a practical solution either ^^

Do vns games show up fine on a flu? I have trouble seeing the loading bar in warlock on firetop mountain and seeing the pictures in fate (my vns game).
