Davec's Joystick Cap Mod

i thin when the gp2x launches official it will have some changes, for example a new stick, but EvilDragon also said that those upgraded sticks by gph can also be bought in his shop. (and i thin at gbax too)

by stick, do you mean the bit soldered to the board itself, or the stick cap?

either way..looks like a very sneaky move on behalf of GPH...release a dodgy joystick cap with the first initial units..wait until you sell 8,000+, then make a new cap and start selling that, which im pretty sure almost everyone will want to buy it..

the stick cap will be expectly changed

Don't expect the worse from anyone and everything... It's a good thing that they think about improvements. Other than that, ED stated at some point of time that he'll may ship them for free to everyone who brought the gp2x from him.

I received mine yesterday, and i am very pleased. I brought it on the bus and psymastr saw it, but he swears that it\\\'s lousy and increases the deadzone a great deal :D. Whatever, I personally think it\\\'s quite good, so mad props to daveC :)

My one suggestion is to buy a barrel of the plasticote liquid rubber and coat the sticks. It would make them at least 40 % better than they are now (In total making them amazing sticks). Well, just a thought

Anyway, thank you! I highly recommend this to everyone

edit: does anyone know why these gay skool computers put a slash with every apostrophe? The retarded computer teacher has no idea....

Make sure it is pressed all of the way down or it will stick up too high. It requires a good deal of force. It will go on easy until it gets to where that flat spot ends and the shaft is all round then it gives resistance and you may think it is bottomed out but it can still go down more.

If installed correctly the dead zone will be SMALLER because the amount of plastic above the end of the stick on mine is about 1 mm, where as the stock stick is around 3-4 mm above the shaft.

I am not sure about that rubber stuff. I have doubts if it would stick real well, it seems that it would peel off after awhile. I could try it, it would also make the stick higher though.

In all honestly...I don't care for DaveC's stick. It's WAY to slick on top, which I imagine is now why he makes them with groove's (as in his sig) and it is WAY to wide. You can't just kind of push the stick left and right, it's more like pressing on the outside edge of the stick to make it go down in that direction, makes it much more tedious of a task to do precise controls...albiet it may be better than stock, the RetroCon mod is still to be surpassed in my opinion, convex, grippy, not really wide = much better control. And I don't think that the stick was worth $10 except for the fact that it was made by hand...and I can't do it myself... ;)

it does look like its pretty wide from the image,

just like the stock cap? only with the stock its because its so slippy?

have you tried the retrocon stick? i was thinking of getting one, but it looks pretty tall and raised above the 2X?

just to make sure, http://www.axess.com/twilight/console/detail/retrocon.jpg

is that the retrocon where everyone got the stick from?

Yep, that's the one I used. I also ordered a cap from DaveC; it looks even more comfortable than my retrocon cap.

As for the 'tallness' ... I noticed this as well, then bored out the hole deeper, and now it sits lower on the metal shaft.

... Thats what she said!

Sorry, i had to ;)

Anywho, would it be possible for you to make one of these in a transparent plastic? i think it'd look pretty neat ^_^

what kind of price would i be looking at? including shipping to the uk!

do you have a picture of the side of the cap not connected to the 2x?

In this thread I posted pics of my inital mod:

Pics

... you can see the side pretty clearly (since it was sitting too high). I have since lowered it. I also painted over the white plastic of the 'Con stick.

moz: Yes, it's rubbish

does it sit as low as the stock cap or is it still really tall?

Hmm, it now sits ~2mm higher than the stock cap, but it's head is much thicker.

That is kind of high. The stock cap had about 3 mm of plastic above the shaft. If you remember my first mod, which was to concave the original cap, I had enough "meat" to cut in all of the way. With my mod I keep it at around 1 mm over the shaft which lessens the dead zone.

Well I ordered mine from DaveC and it is going to replace my retrocon mod!
I'll post my experiences when I receive mine. Great work DaveC!

I got mine today. I must say, WOW, its about a hundred times better than the stock stick. I can now pull off moves in Samurai Shodown (mame) flawlessly every time. Technical explinations aside, thats all the convincing i needed. I have one of the first ones without the ridges, and its still not at all slippery with sweaty hands. Worth the ten bucks for sure! Well done.

-If there was any fault, it would be that it sat a little to far down, causing contact with the case. As per DaveCs instructions, a little paper in the hole fixed that right up.
