@lukey: The pandora has an omap5... I want it to do those futuristic things too! Or is this just misleading propaganda?
@Klumpen: Fascinating topic! I did not get what was happening, and so I could not "judge" the reaction. Also, I am not sure what "science" is.
If
science is those
labs doing tests and only doing the experiments that will get them
one year more of budget, instead of doing others, that MIGHT be important/groundbreaking, but probably wont be... then yes... science is broken.
If
science is F=m*a and what not, then YES, science is broken, as
Quantum physics invalidates all Newtonian physics. (hey, before Kepler, planetary movement was done with cardiods, for which the math also worked, but was more complex to calculate).
If
science is
Mengele and the current day labrat/bunny/pig
experimenters... then YES, science is broken. (although I have no problems with mass murder of innocent E.Coli that have been injected with RNA strands that produce insuline, and ripping them open frees that insuline, which can be used to keep a human alive)
ALL
science will be
used for war. From foodprocessing (food rations), to micro processors (predator drones), to monitors, textiles, etc. I am not aware of a EULA or Creative Commons that
disallows belic uses... of course,
rouge states would never comply to that.
If
science is not open to "
mind over matter"; i.e. the fact that the experimenter can change the outcome of the results by just mere presence (hence, the
double blind experiments)... then it is broken. (turns out the guru or shaman is right...)
"
science" should be
for all, but it gets
patented (hence, illegal to produce yourself) and the big corporation rakes in the money. Broken (but by design). (hence, clamshell is all that is left)
Now, broken does not mean to toss it all out. very big parts are salvageable. But a restructuring should be done.
Now, the fact that white man came, and "conquered", and stole incredible amounts of goods, which allowed to live beyond the primary needs, and thus, with free time, came dedicated science (and then standing on shoulders of giants, you get a headstart).
example: the fleets of gold from America to Spain (and the mismanagement of Spain of said money, they could have been topdog) provided a monetary influx to the whole of Europe. The Dutch stole just one boat and still brag about the "
silver fleat". Just imagine how much was stolen. Each time I go to a British museum I am fascinated by how much (stolen) historic value the museums have.
But back to "science". Back in the day "Made in China" is synonym for copied technology, it still is, but slowly the Chinese are designing top technology, and so is India. I do not know how the apparatus around science (methods, bureaucracy) is going to change in mere years, but it will change. South-Africa has brilliant minds, but they need to be nurtured and most universities lack such environments (a silicon valley, as it were).
They are rejecting the old status quo, just like an adolescent discards all knowledge given to him by his parents, and then slowly rebuilds on steady ground, his own knowledge pillars (only to, mostly, realize the knowledge pillars are the same has his parents).
In conclusion: I do not think they are taking the right steps towards (what I perceive as) their goals.
