That's actually not as absurd as it might seem. They're right, cell phone addiction is a thing (behavioral, obvs, not chemical), and if you really want to break the habit of checking your phone every 10 seconds a surrogate that you can hold that doesn't actually let you do the checking might be a good way to ease off. It works for pretty much every other type of addiction, including smoking, alcohol, and food.
