More info on this game here. Apparently it is based on a Japanese PSOne game called "Korokoro Postnin" (edit: spelling).
The file I got from PDRoms also contains Linux and Windows versions for those who are interested.
Bubble Bobble rom is encrypted meaning it takes more effort for MAME4ALL to run it. The older MAME port couldn't decrypt it at all.
As juan said, Bobble Bobble is the way to go. It's an unofficial hack with broken decryption.
Squidge's explanation makes sense to me too (glad someone figured it out). I have decided to do this mod now when I get around to it.

I am keeping an eye on this thread. Sounds fascinating.
Theory: Maybe the shorter cap shaft helps by decreasing the distance between a direction and its opposite, i.e. a part of the cap hits the unit earlier than normal forcing you to use shorter movements.

My corrections would be that Neo Geo emulation is not slow if using the beta GnGeo version with dual CPU support and that TV out doesn't require a $50 cradle.
