Replacement Interface

Well on to the main point, I have been thinking about how this could all work, and writing up some sample XML files.

Can we incorporate fisheye into the menu ? This would mean being able to get more icons on the screen without compromising context or visibility. If their is more than one row, then a fisheyed matrix of icons could be used.

I apologise for the hack job picture

Additionaly, a zoomable matrix view for images / movie screens would be good.

Woah, that picture is hacked up somethink nasty. :)
But that's an interesting idea, wouldn't work well without SVGs though

Yep I thought that would be pretty cool as well, but I think that would be the last thing to be implemented, and it would be pretty impossible to do it the normal way, as it is processor heavy.

Yum!

Edit: I think it would be really cool to be able to enable a mouse using XML too. And then to be able to use that. Not useful. But cool.

I like the idea of the XML. It would make it highly configurable and if was correctly implemented would allow everybody to be happy with icon and/or list layouts. I am sure somebody could write a set of simple design tools that would allow anybody to write their own xml on their PC.

You wouldn't need to write it, you would just have to fill out entries in a default XML file.
It would mostly be really easy stuff like this:
A simple Emulators category. said:
<category>
<name>Emulators</name>
<icon>/mnt/sd/system/categorys/icons/emulation.png</icon>
<filterByFolder andSubfolders="false">/mnt/sd/programs/emulators/</filterByFolder>
<!-- Filter by extension means that anything without the fileextension will be filtered out-->
<filterByExtension>.gpe</filterByExtension>
</category>

In addition to Hanz's post, you wouldn't have to write the XML it can be autogenerated from .info files stored with the .gpes

And on addition to that it would be very easy to make a program to create categories, items and other skinning information. Perhaps even with a preview image. (That would be cool).

Are you just going to be redesigning the visuals, or are control issues going to be addressed, too?

Because honestly, I have two large problems with the GUI. I don't give an airborne copulation at a ventrally rotating pastry what it *looks* like, but for crying out loud, PLEASE let us move in any of the 4 directions?

The other problem is the ".gpu" vs ".gpe" files being in seperate menus. That just doesn't seem to make much sense to me.

i don't think anyone likes that. well i sort of do. but anyway you know you can just rename them, right?

I know. That's why I sort of wonder why bother with it in the first place?

GeminiDomino, I believe this was actually an issue that was repaired in one of the firmware upgrades. I never installed any, but I believe it to be the case nonetheless.

EDIT: I'm referring to the movement, btw.

Allan.

We don't know that craig was talking about GPH.
You do realise that GPH only has 3 people in it, and that Dignysys have now been fired right?
They have hired some (computer?/coders?) engineers I hear, whether they are going to be used for this or not I don't know.

I would spend time doing a design that I wouldn't like as I would want as many people to use my interface as possible. Please note, that as far as this goes, it will probably be quite a while before I am able to do this.

I know that Craig was talking about GPH. I know this from an e-mail.

So yes this is all about the interface in the official firmware. That is why it is so important. It is also why I don't want to be stuck with something that I hate. It will be forever.

By the way I don't care for the cross bar design because I have already used it, on the PSP. It is awkward and slow to me. So I am speaking from experience.

I guess we will now just have to wait and see. I think you will probably get your way as Guyfawkes likes the PSP type interface because he likes the PSP.

Paradox, are you doing this on purpose so that someone buys you a new keyboard out of frustration?

I dont think all this flaming and nonsense will bring us anywhere. If anyone here is bored he can try to actually get a demo in whatever manner done or think about the Interface itself. Not so much about the guys sitting in front of it.

@Paradox: I made you a nice little package of spaces you can copy and paste into you posts :) [ ]
(Or is Ctrl+V really that uncomfortable to you ?)

Here are some spare spaces that I do not need. Please feel free to cut and paste them into your messages.
