These would be the new "START, SELECT" button positions

The top version uses full size buttons like the other ABXY buttons
The bottom version uses smaller buttons because of the limited space near the stick and speaker (don't forget the speaker itself is larger than the grille pattern). These would be better when playing vertically oriented MAME games. It could also be used for vertical shooters and Arkanoid type games like we have on GP32. The current GPx2 design would be very awkward for these as you would have to crook your hand around the unit to fire/jump etc.

These would not be too hard to change, there are more elaborate schemes but would be to much to change this late in developement.

The volume could be re-located to the side as a wheel like GP32 or be placed where the start and select were under the ABXY buttons.

In all honesty I think the control scheme they have now is pretty good, But the vertical mame thing does have some merit to it.

The top picture looks more pleasing to the eye although the bottom layout "may" be easier to play vertical games.

:)

The joint in my thumb dislikes the first one.

I second that!
Also, switch the ABXY buttons to look like a SNES controller!

So, the second on would be better, but I would like the select/start button placed like this:

Oxx
xxO

or this:

xxO
Oxx

not like this:

xOx
xOx

I could add some more buttons. but I think more that 26 buttons gonna be useless, on this console.

26 is the magic number.

Oh no, that is a button overload, I don`t need 11 buttons on a handheld...

edit: Just in case, this is pointed at Jaw ;) :D

I'm lazy, someone get me an A button blank on a white background for MSpaintin' and i'll show ya what I think would work.

Maybe they can modify the volume buttons, so these can function as arcade buttons?
I also think they should put the select button on the left, but start on the right.

That's the one.

For the record, I don't think GPH is going to change the design this close to launch.

i'm with these guys on both accounts

who needs shoulder buttons with 6 on the front?
and also if bothering with vertical axis games, might as well have enough buttons to play all vertical games eh?

I wouldn't mind if they kept those two buttons were they are. Then move the volume and add two more buttons. Although, I don't know what possible uses they could have. :p

People are missing something...

Turn the GPX2 around the OTHER way. The four face buttons form a dpad, and you have start/select for buttons. Yes I know the controls are reversed (right thumb for dpad, left for buttons) but many classic arcade games worked that way anyway.

It would work just fine for MAME.

May not be perfect, but it's there waiting to be tried if GPX2 doesn't get redesigned (and it's unlikely it will at this point in time, although I voted for the 2nd picture).
