I really only meant that mirror for the guys in that thread, not everyone who reads the news page. I'll catch hell from our server hosts if they find out other sites are linking to file mirrors like that without visiting so...

You're welcome to setup your own mirror of course, or just link to Retrogames news page and I'll add the file link in my GP32 update story.

Thanks.

Yawn, I thought it was a major site that could take the bandwidth.

Since I'm nice (and not Slashdot) I'll take it off and hopefully hando will host it when he gets back.

Umm, yeah we can take the bandwidth. We also need the visits so we, and all the other ZTnet hosted sites, can stay alive, advertising payments aren't what they used to be. I don't pay for Retrogames to be up, so it's not my right to grant file mirrors to other sites.

You have a really ignorant attitude on this subject, unfortunately.

I was nice enough to setup the mirror for that thread, I don't need any smartass remarks from you.

Hando sent me this a while back from GpZigi - it's his scoop :D Anyways this has been common knowledge for a while, but there is a newer (than 0.11) release of GPVSGB available that fixes a crash bug and increases the speed noticably higher. [Thanks to Retrogames a mirror is available here!] Link removed unfortunately for bandwidth reasons; check the gp32x forums to find some links, and hopefully we'll have a mirror soon. Try it out and let us know on the forums how much it is improved from the old version.

Note: You may have to right-click and choose 'Save Link As' or 'Save Target As'.

Cute. I've now removed the file thanks to you.

I asked and explained nicely why I wanted the direct link from your news page changed, and you act like a 12 year old. It's NOT just a matter of bandwidth as I explained above. This was the second time I was nice enough to mirror files for your board visitors, and the last time.

Errm... did you notice, that he removed the link on the mainpage a while ago?
It looks like it's still there, cause he only changed the link address...

This section was a dig at me:

Link removed unfortunately for bandwidth reasons; check the gp32x forums to find some links, and hopefully we'll have a mirror soon.

And he's being smartass telling people to check the forums to find the direct link. I'm not stupid, I know when I'm being f*cked with and I don't take crap from anyone.

this just sounds like a misunderstanding to me, the gp32 scene is small, probably didn't think the small amount of people who'd be downloading the file would cause any problems, and you'd probably find 90% of the visitors here read through the forums anyway so he probably didn't think it'd matter it was on the main page or not

i think we all need to kick back and listen to the soothing sound of pappa roach

There's no misunderstanding. I explained and asked nicely, and got smartass remarks in return.

It's not a matter of bandwidth, for the last time - I don't own Retrogames, I don't pay the bills. I can get away with a quiet messageboard link here and there, but it's not a good idea for sites to do direct links from their news page, where it may get noticed by ZTnet. I respect and appreciate the people who provide the webspace and bandwidth for Retrogames, and that's why I had to ask Rico not to directly link the file on the news page.

He should've just changed it as I asked and not acted smartass about it. Especially since I've clearly been very friendly toward this site for a long time now.

I'll host it. Although I have no bloody idea what you guys are talking about, I'll host it. Just tell me where I can download it, and I'll load it onto my site.

It's now available directly at www.gp32emu.com, Guyfawkes just posted it a short while ago I guess.

The file in question abbibi is a new version of GpvGB, the GBC emu. It's a test build that runs fast and fixes the crash bug I think.

Prophet, take a look at yourself. Your link would properly get around 100-150 clicks at most. Do you really think ZTnet would bash your site for that?

Be reasonable man, I could understand if Rico linked it on Slashdot or IGN, but the GP32 community is so small, 100 downloads can't really hurt.

It's a matter of principle. As I explained above. Not a matter of bandwidth. I didn't give permission to any site to link my files from their news page, nor is it really my right to do so. And I politely requested that the link be removed and got smack for it. Just look at the ridiculous post he left in the news, with the blank link sitting there. It's absurd, and he was online all day yesterday on IRC, so it's not like he was away. GP32emu posted the file, and his news post should've just been edited to reflect that for people wanting it.

Don't tell me to look at myself either. If you never ran a site, maybe you don't get why file linking without permission is not appreciated. If another site directly linked this site's files from the news page without permission, trust me, I bet Hando would not like it. I simply asked him to refer people to Retrogames news page instead of directly linking the file - which is NOTHING to ask considering how often I refer people to this site in Retrogames news page. It takes 5 seconds to change a news post.

Unless you're in my position, maybe you won't understand my anger yesterday. But I know why I was mad. Just let it pass, it's between me and Rico anyway. And I'm not angry anymore now, and in the future if I can help out with a file mirror here on the board I will still post them, but I'll simply ask that they not be "officially" linked in the news page. It is my right to ask that small thing, no?

I can see why Prophet is annoyed even tho only 100 people clicked the link it still isnt right he didnt give the permission to use that link and even if its just 100 people Retrogames will see that it has been linked from another site and close his down i dont see why people cant see that.

You cant say look at yourself when his site could be canceled even if it was just 50 people downloading the emu it dosent matter it still will be noticed by Retrogames besides even if he asked not to have it linked its cause he could get in alot of trouble.

I think we've got a misunderstanding here. When you posted, you said several times that the link had to be removed from the gp32x front page because nobody would click the banner ads (they weren't visiting Retrogames itself). I thought that the file was officially hosted and that the bandwidth was OK to be used, hence my post "I thought it was a major site that could take the bandwidth."

In my book, this equals bandwidth, as people aren't looking at banner ads = you don't get as much ad revenue = you can't afford the bandwidth. End of story.

Secondly just because I'm on IRC does NOT mean I'm here. Shortly after being sent a message from you I removed the link. I knew I was in the wrong, I didn't expect a thanks, and I certainly DID NOT expect someone to attack me and call me a 12 year old and a smartass.

I removed all mention of the link now. The idea of not removing the mention of the link was to show that I had removed a direct link and, also, to inform users that the link was removed because it was not given for that kind of traffic. Else, I would get dozens of e-mails quite quickly asking "Where has the gpvsgb link gone??"

I asked to check the forums for links because, as demonstrated by some helpful people on this board, it can be mirrored. I know of at least two GPVSGB mirrors by other people, so my reference to checking the boards is completely valid.

Just to let you know, I don't actually owe you anything. Get someone to configure retrogames properly, file hotlinking is perfectly allowed in the internet, and quite frankly I can link to whatever file I want. It's only because I actually care about other sites that I removed the link. Don't want the file linked? Learn how to stop it.

Finally - the "Yawn" in my post was not because I was being sarcastic or making fun of you. It was because I was tired.

"I don't take crap from anyone." - Guess what, I don't either and you blew this rather simple mistake out of proportions.

As I already explained, it's not the bandwidth/revenue issue for me, it's the principle of linking files without permission.

Secondly just because I'm on IRC does NOT mean I'm here. Shortly after being sent a message from you I removed the link. I knew I was in the wrong, I didn't expect a thanks, and I certainly DID NOT expect someone to attack me and call me a 12 year old and a smartass.

Read your post from my POV, that's how it seemed.

Oh please... Even if I choose to believe everything you're telling me now, you could've simply pointed them to Retrogames and I would've added the mirror link in my latest GP32 news post which already had a link to this site anyway. You barely edited your post, and it seemed more like sour grapes than keeping the public informed. Leaving a blank link is plenty confusing IMO.

I asked to check the forums for links because, as demonstrated by some helpful people on this board, it can be mirrored. I know of at least two GPVSGB mirrors by other people, so my reference to checking the boards is completely valid.

I was here through that whole period, hoping you'd come to this thread to address me, and nobody posted another mirror till well after you posted that. And if you were so busy on IRC and not looking here as you said, how would you know when the new mirrors popped up? Hmm.

Just to let you know, I don't actually owe you anything.

No, you have it upside down and backwards - I DON'T OWE YOU ANYTHING. I didn't ask you for anything. I offered a few people here a quick file mirror and you chose to post it in the news, and I POLITLEY explained and asked you to remove it OR send them to Retrogames and I'd post it there. Stop trying to twist things, cause I'm not buying it.

Get someone to configure retrogames properly, file hotlinking is perfectly allowed in the internet, and quite frankly I can link to whatever file I want.

Keep ignoring the principles involved. You chose to make some bad blood with me, now you're just making it worse.

Finally - the "Yawn" in my post was not because I was being sarcastic or making fun of you. It was because I was tired.

Assuming I choose to believe that story, how am I supposed to know this? Did it occur to you at all that starting a reply with "yawn" seems like part of THE REPLY? Either you don't think before you write, or you meant it the way I took it. Which is it?

"I don't take crap from anyone." - Guess what, I don't either and you blew this rather simple mistake out of proportions.

I blew it out of proportion how? By posting here? I don't see any harm in that whether I'm right or exaggerating. And it's not the "simple mistake" of posting the file that made me angry but the way you handled things afterwards.

At this point, it's over and done so screw it. I think maybe there was some misunderstanding - to a degree. I also think you WERE being smartass and are just lying to cover that up now. And the entire situation would have been avoided if you'd simply ASKED ME before you posted your news bit with my mirror without permission. It's all a matter of principle, not a matter of what you can do or not. And if you don't want to make someone think you're being smartass, don't answer them with a yawn and some easily misconstrued remarks. A simple "OK" would've been a lot better than "yawn." Surely anyone can see that much.

No, quite the opposite. I think Rico just wanted to offer the file here before the other GP32 sites IMO, and didn't like when I asked him not to use my file.

This is the thread where it all started: http://www.gp32x.de/board/index.php?showtopic=2653

I have offered this board files before, but I didn't expect or want them to be posted as news. Hardly a "bonfire" for me - wanting NOT to be in the news.

What's a bigger waste of bandwidth: linking a file, or this thread?
