COVID-19 / Coronavirus Pandemic

Anyway, my dad said that one of my stepmother's grandchildren who's living with him has COVID
On the phone today, my dad said that the kid’s skin turned grey, which apparently is a symptom of Omicron. So far the rest of the household is doing fine though. They’ve all been wearing masks outside of their bedrooms.

Best wishes for the kid. It's not fun being sick, so hopefully the kid will recover soon. The grey skin could be due to oxygenation of the blood, I've seen it ones before with someone that had a serious lung disease (but there can be many causes probably).

I know what you're going to say, Bulgaria has an extremely aged population. That is surely a factor but it's 5X excess deaths and they don't have 5X old people.

Well, most countries vaccinated all older people. You don't need 5 times more old people for deaths to rise if you don't vaccinate the elderly.
Their current rate of death appears to be 4.05% which is somewhat higher then the 3% reported in general. Which could be due to having a bigger older population (the median age in Germany is higher and their death rate from covid is 1.5%, I don't know how big the group elderly is though).

While most of these deaths could have been prevented, you could say this is somewhat the worst-case scenario though. People can die only once, so you would expect the number to be lower next year.

Your right my 5X statement is bullshit. Bulgaria has issues accepting as well as acquiring vaccines.
Well, multiple things can be true at the same time. They can have a massive increase a certain period, have an average higher number over a longer period, have vaccination problems, have a large older population, etc.
It's one of the reasons why there is a lot of discussions, as sometimes it isn't easy to spot these differences and they might appear conflicting.

Due to my recent sickness, I’ve managed to schedule a COVID-19 test for tomorrow. Wish me luck.
I won't wish a ludopath luck :p. I wish you a negative result and recovery from your symptoms and whatever causes them.
But I read an interview with an epidemiologist which basically says tests are useless now. If you have symptoms you have omicron. He means if you have omicron symptoms, of course, which I don't know whether you have.
If you don't read Catalan, you can try apt install apertium-en-ca or something.

Well, I've had vomiting, diarrhea, fever, muscle pain, and bad tasting burps. Four out of five of those hit COVID-19, but five of five hit food poisoning. My food poisoning has lasted since Thursday though, which makes me think it just started as food poisoning. My fever was back for a little bit this morning after being gone since Thursday, and my left foot hurts, but my burps are gone, and I only vomited on Thursday. Diarrhea has been a constant though, I even had some just a few minutes ago. Hopefully I have it under enough control to do my test tomorrow. Gotta walk to the place, but it's only a fifteen-minute walk.

Well, he just says a negative antigen test says very little. A positive can always be useful to isolate someone, but a negative could be positive the day after or before. Besides, omicron is so widespread that there aren't test for everyone. So it's not very reasonable for someone to test every few hours. Many cases are asymptomatic, and if an asymptomatic contact gets tested that could give a positive and help contain spread, but it's already out of control. If somene has symptoms, that's maybe more informatio that a puntual test. I'm no doctor, but if you have an appointment just go and you'll have one data point more.

My dad said two more of my stepmother's grandchildren have COVID now, bringing it to three out of four. It was kind of inevitable, with them all being in the same house. My dad says he hasn't been tested yet, but that my stepmother will be testing soon.

Shoot, I guess I can't see him this Wednesday either.

WHO forecasts half of europeans will get omicron in 6 or 8 weeks. [and then the other half in one or two weeks more ?, they say it doubles each week].
Deaths are a little lower than last week though. I guess they'll pick up as the incidence grows, and jump up as health care collapses.
We'll see if this comes true. Rate of death didn't really increase in South Africa, but not all continents are the same obviously.

8 weeks = two months. So I will get Omicron before the Pyra. At least I got something to look forward to... short term.

as health care collapses
collapses my ass. hoovers up all our cash.

all this talk about how long we'll all live and how great health care is... it's the medical industrial complex prepping us for forking over the last of our savings. swindling our children out of their inheritance.

they have people way smarter than you or I creating products and services designed specifically to fleece us.

I have no pension. No savings. I'm going live life while it's good then opt for death. Most of us will I reckon.

I respect both your optimism and your ass, but something collapsing is not enough to make sure that something stops hoovering up everybody's cash. They can still charge people, abuse workers and collapse service at the same time.
