Preparing for a Prototype

For whoever cares: The charge control regulates the voltage to maintain a set charging current, until the voltage reaches a preset limit (usually 4.2 V) and then keeps it there. Since the battery's resistence goes up as the charge does, the current gradually goes down in this second stage. (I'm talking about LiIon batteries, but I'd say it's the same for LiPos - maybe a slightly different (per cell) target voltage.)
Drawing 0.77A currently - which follows what you're saying perfectly.

I dug around and found another 32GB SDHC card to use as an OS installer / eMMC flasher card. I'm in the process of backing the data off of it now. Likely already exists in my backups, but no point in being destructive. Using these older / smaller cards for this work seems appropriate.

I second the recommendation to set up the serial console. I’m not sure how common this is, but sometimes the serial console is the only way to break into u-boot.

Yeah, the only thing you should be looking at is what's on the serial output. You can't tell what's going on just from what's on the screen or how much power the charger takes.
It does dump a lot of info on there, so sometimes you need to scroll up through quite a lot of stuff to find what's really going on.
There are also a few drivers that give some scary looking errors that might look like serious issues, but you can safely ignore them (mostly sound related stuff)
There is still a lot of weirdness with the power side of things though, and the kernel will shut down halfway through booting if it thinks the battery doesn't have enough charge.

Don't worry too much about it though, a lot of this stuff is only really tested on my pyra, and things are set up to work with my workflow. If you're not using it exactly like I am, problems are to be expected, that's why we need other people to actually use this stuff :)

And, I'm presuming, report back on this stuff as they experience it. :)

Basically, I'm treating this as being an early beta tester. Break stuff, report it, if a fix comes, test it. Until then, find other things to break and report back on.

I have created a new pyrainstall SD card. Charging pull is down to 0.3A (battery should be fully charged). Red power button. Unresponsive. Removing battery, etc...

Reloading the battery then hooking it up to the microUSB 3.0 charger port then pressing the power button now has it installing rootfs while drawing ~1A from the plug. (good)
Syncing, propmpt for poweroff.

Should I be running the dd zero wipe every time before I reload the OS or should it matter? I didn't do it this time because what I envision that I'm testing is if the issues I'd had with loading the eMMC were because of low battery or potentially a faulty SD card source.

Booting from eMMC, battery in, no mains connected. Welcome screen. Start now. Calibrate = Yes, skipped to enter your full name, box full of +++++++++++.
Left shoulder button shift not working for the G. Use right shift to writ Grench. dp dark red on black screen. Waiting 5 min. No good. Still stuck at the dark red dp logo on black screen with a movable x mouse pointer.

Trying it again with the unit plugged into the power source. Same behavior as above, same stuck point.

Well, that was with a freshly created OS flasher on a different card. I'm going to call it on trying to install to the eMMC for now. I keep repeating the same thing different ways to get an equally failed result.

On a side note, opening, removing the battery, reloading the battery, putting the lid back in place several dozen times hasn't resulted in any signs of wear on the tabs of the battery compartment lid. It is a pretty tight fit and requires the right angle and more pressure than the Pandora did too. So, the plastics used in the Pyra case are already showing to be far far better than the Pandora.

I created a new SD card for booting in the left SD slot. It booted up to:
(initrmfs) [ 115.601818] random: crng init done

It froze/stopped there. Hmm.

Now it is doing the thing where it won't do anything. Re-creating another bootable SD card image. Starting to wonder to the state of my USB 3 card reader - if it isn't working right, that could explain a lot. If this one doesn't work, I'm switching up hardware to create a new one.

How about some instructions on how to set up a serial console on the Pyra? I recall that the microUSB port had some serial capabilities. Is this done through microUSB-USB or do I need to adapt that out to an RS-232 null modem cable?

Second freshly created bootable SD card image got me to the same initramfs. I'm going to let this one run a bit.

Can you post the full dmesg log? The line you posted is not relevant and occurs at a semi-random time during the boot process.

Keep in mind I'm not a Linux OS programmer. Would this get saved to the SD card I'm booting from somewhere or is this something you expect me to type in from the screen?

My void linux installation puts it in /var/log/ as dmesg.log

You need to type "dmesg" in a terminal from booted system.
If you have internet connection you can direct this output to some pastebin server
Code:
 dmesg | curl -F 'sprunge=<-' http://sprunge.us
or create a text file and copy it using usb or sdcard
Code:
 dmesg > dmesg.txt

You can also find all logs in /var/log folder.

Wow, you're getting some very weird results there... I'll try to explain the whole booting process here a bit, maybe that helps :)

  • U-Boot currently shuts itself off when the battery voltage is too low. So if you switch on the unit and the keyboard LED will only flash for a split second, it means U-Boot has been initialized but the battery is too empty.
  • If the unit doesn't seem to react at all (no keyboard LED flashing), it usually means that either the battery is completely drained (and no power supply is connected) or that there's no bootloader (in which case it will look like it's off but drain the battery as the OMAP5 is constantly searching for a bootable media).
  • The OMAP5 checks for a bootloader in this order: Left SD Card slot, eMMC, USB. If you have an SD Card in slot 1 with a broken bootloader (or anything that looks like a bootloader for the OMAP5), it will try to boot from it and crash, so no LEDs will light up. So if you ever prepared an SD Card for flashing, simply reformatting it will most probably only kill half of the bootloader, so that card will crash the unit when you switch it on. Reformatting it with the SDFormatter tool on Windows will fix that - or dd'ing it with zeroes and then repartitioning them (do not use gparted, as it places some stuff at the beginning of the SD Card which will make the OMAP5 think it's a bootable SD Card :)
  • So having a bootable SD Card in the left slot will ALWAYS override booting from the eMMC.
  • We don't have any check setup for the rootfs that's being flashed - so if the SD Card had some write errors, this could lead to such issues. Though the flasher process should show some errors when it's unpacking the rootfs, but I'm not sure you checked that :)
  • Most important: Freezes and other weirdnesses usually happen when the battery gets empty! It doesn't shutdown automatically yet, it simply does weird stuff! The same happens if you power it without battery and the power supply / cable is too weak.
You can use a multimeter to check the voltage of the battery if you don't have a bootable system. Or you can simply put the battery into the Pyra, connect it to the power supply and make a hard-power off (press POWER for more than 8 seconds). Even if you don't see anything! Without a bootloader, power input is limited to 500mA. And without a bootloader, the OMAP5 constantly searches for a bootloader until you power it off. And that would need more power than 500mA - so it would actually drain the battery!
So to charge if you don't have a working OS on the internal storage, it's best to boot into a bootable SD Card and power off the system. Booting an OS will enable the power input to 2A and when you shutdown, the OMAP5 also doesn't drain any battery anymore.
The weird thing is:
The filesystem is not dd'ed onto the eMMC, it is being EXTRACTED there.
So even if your eMMC had badblocks, the eMMC should handle that and use different locations automatically.

One quick notice: As you mention that the shoulder button doesn't work as SHIFT:
This is being handled by a program called "funkeymonkey". It could be it doesn't start reliable for the first boot wizard - have you also tried that when you've booted the OS?

Make sure you don't have an SD Card in the internal SD Card slot. We have not done any real tests with that slot.

How about some instructions on how to set up a serial console on the Pyra? I recall that the microUSB port had some serial capabilities. Is this done through microUSB-USB or do I need to adapt that out to an RS-232 null modem cable?

Connect a MicroUSB data cable to the MicroUSB port of your Pyra (the one above the big USB port) and connect the cable to your PC.
Then it should appear as a serial device and you can simply run your favourite Serial Terminal program to connect to it, save logs, etc.
Default settings with 115200 baud, no hardware / software flow control should work fine.

Are you using Windows or Linux?

With Linux, I suggest to use Minicom.

 dmesg | curl -F 'sprunge=<-' http://sprunge.us
or create a text file and copy it using usb or sdcard
Code:
 dmesg > dmesg.txt

You can also find all logs in /var/log folder.
So - in this case where I can't get the system to boot and get past the Welcome wizard on the eMMC or even get to the Welcome wizard on SD card at the moment - I'm not very well going to be able to copy the log file out. Hmm.

Wow, you're getting some very weird results there... I'll try to explain the whole booting process here a bit, maybe that helps :)
Thank you for the reply - I will try to get through the additional bits, but I'm running out of time tonight and it will be a couple of days before I can give this more time.

U-Boot currently shuts itself off when the battery voltage is too low. So if you switch on the unit and the keyboard LED will only flash for a split second, it means U-Boot has been initialized but the battery is too empty.
I have been letting it sit (red power light on, nothing on the screen, drawing 1.8A) until the charge amperage drops down to 0.7 before trying these things. I'm 90% sure that the battery has juice. I've also been trying without the battery with some successes, some failures.

If the unit doesn't seem to react at all (no keyboard LED flashing), it usually means that either the battery is completely drained (and no power supply is connected) or that there's no bootloader (in which case it will look like it's off but drain the battery as the OMAP5 is constantly searching for a bootable media).
I'm betting that it is having issues finding the bootloader. I have had several cases where the eMMC won't boot anything, then seem to work under the same circumstance after I pull the battery and let it sit for an hour. Is there any chance that CPU heat might be messing with an iffy connection to the eMMC? That might be an explanation for the intermittent nature of some of the things I'm seeing.

The OMAP5 checks for a bootloader in this order: Left SD Card slot, eMMC, USB. If you have an SD Card in slot 1 with a broken bootloader (or anything that looks like a bootloader for the OMAP5), it will try to boot from it and crash, so no LEDs will light up.
The frustrating bit, though, is the first few times I tried with a self-prepared card, it worked. I seem to be chasing ever diminishing returns.

Okay - good to know. I've been using gparted to remove the partitions from these cards then using them as a target for dd. Next round I'll partition with parted - or something else that is not gparted. What is your favorite partitioning program? I'll use that to eliminate this variability.

So having a bootable SD Card in the left slot will ALWAYS override booting from the eMMC.
Yes - which is a good thing.

We don't have any check setup for the rootfs that's being flashed - so if the SD Card had some write errors, this could lead to such issues. Though the flasher process should show some errors when it's unpacking the rootfs, but I'm not sure you checked that :)
The eMMC flashing / unpacking program seems to run well. I just re-ran it again right now while typing this up. I didn't see any errors in the script that flew by on the screen before:
Code:
Installing rootfs

Throughput: 5837478B (5.6MB/s)

Syncing

----------------------------------------
Done. Press any key to poweroff_

The eMMC flasher / installer seems to be doing it's job without error though.

Most important: Freezes and other weirdnesses usually happen when the battery gets empty! It doesn't shutdown automatically yet, it simply does weird stuff! The same happens if you power it without battery and the power supply / cable is too weak.
I have been doing most of my testing using a 12" heavy gauge industrial USB 3.0 to microUSB 3.0 wide cable plugged into a 2A power supply with a USB power meter between them. I can see that it is drawing up to 1.87A at 5.17VDC when charging the battery - and see that charge draw lower through time.

You can use a multimeter to check the voltage of the battery if you don't have a bootable system.
Battery has three lead points - and I now see the labels for them - I'll try checking that next round before I start. What are the expected voltage ranges?

Or you can simply put the battery into the Pyra, connect it to the power supply and make a hard-power off (press POWER for more than 8 seconds). Even if you don't see anything!
Doing this results in the input current dropping to 0.501A. Checked.

Without a bootloader, power input is limited to 500mA. And without a bootloader, the OMAP5 constantly searches for a bootloader until you power it off. And that would need more power than 500mA - so it `would actually drain the battery!
So to charge if you don't have a working OS on the internal storage, it's best to boot into a bootable SD Card and power off the system. Booting an OS will enable the power input to 2A and when you shutdown, the OMAP5 also doesn't drain any battery anymore.
Alright. Catch is I'm having a bit of difficulty booting into an OS at the moment. Working on that. Maybe it's because I was using gparted?

The weird thing is:
The filesystem is not dd'ed onto the eMMC, it is being EXTRACTED there.
So even if your eMMC had badblocks, the eMMC should handle that and use different locations automatically.
This isn't acting like an SSD with bad blocks. More like a bad cable or noise on the line would be my interpretation. I need to make a whole new set of cards from scratch though now that I know gparted isn't approved.

One quick notice: As you mention that the shoulder button doesn't work as SHIFT:
This is being handled by a program called "funkeymonkey". It could be it doesn't start reliable for the first boot wizard - have you also tried that when you've booted the OS?
Yes - and I've also done it during the login screen on one of the SD cards when I had those working - and it worked on the SD cards but not on the eMMC which was what struck me as weird.

Make sure you don't have an SD Card in the internal SD Card slot. We have not done any real tests with that slot.
Using a 64GB EVO card in the internal SD slot running was actually one of my best user experiences so far. It booted right up, let me use the left shoulder button shift right off for the user name and was stable enough that I used it to post into the forum here. I likely scratched that one when I used gparted on that card to get rid of the tiny default f2fs partition and replace it (copying the contents out and back in) to an ext4 partition because it bugged me that I couldn't resize the f2fs. (that was my offroading experiement)

I have work tomorrow and am about done for tonight. Again, this is all more about my learning curve than anything. Quite likely the problem isn't the Pyra, it's me.

I'm not sure that is a good thing as I'm still stumbling around making my own variety of human errors getting a handle on the hardware. I'm not a dev, and have some catch up and mistakes to make before I'm even going to be much good with it. Hopefully you will all be forgiving of my doing so in this public, now overly public, forum thread. I hadn't even thought that the press might shine a light on my initial stumbling around. For that you all have my apologies.

Stop procrastinating and rather gather the console output to attach it to your next post, before you're off to work. :p

Alright. Working on the assumption that gparted was the root of my failures. My objective now is to make a usable card for this per ED's specs above.

I used fdisk to blow away all partitions on a 32GB SDHC card.
I used dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdj to zero fill the unpartitioned card.
That is taking a long time even on a 32GB card at 2.7MB/s. Still running - I roughly estimate it will take 3 hours or so. Hope I don't have to do that to all the cards I use for this. I'm going to have to let it run overnight.

When it is done, I'm going to make this one an eMMC flash installer media using this command:
dd if=./install-nobat.img of=/dev/sdj bs=1M; sync

Okay - looking at the manpage for minicom.
Code:
https://linux.die.net/man/1/minicom

It is going to take more than just the name of the program and installing it to get this connected to a Pyra connected from the microUSB charging port to a USB port on my workstation. It appears to be command line driven with a pile of options to be applied when launching it to specify where to find the device being targeted. Does someone have the launch string that should find the Pyra so I don't have to spend a few hours figuring it out?

I never knew that I would miss my old DOS coms program Commo.

It is going to take more than just the name of the program and installing it to get this connected to a Pyra
I too had trouble with minicom. I found screen much easier to use from a linux machine (which I think you have based on that minicom error)
sudo screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200
Is what I use to connect to the serial port of the Dev Board.
Control+a, then d to detach from that screen.
Control+a, then \ will kill a screen session if you run into trouble.
screen -r should be able to reattach.
screen -ls shows screen sessions available.

You should be able to see the pyra show up as a connectable device if you ls /dev/*USB*

Hopefully this is helpful information.
I should dig up how to save what is passed to screen to the host machine.

-edit-
Forgot that you need to run screen as sudo after seeing your post.
-edit 2-
You can also use Control-a + H to save logs into screenlog.n file. One more Control-a + H to turn off.

I used dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdj to zero fill the unpartitioned card.
Which also undos any partitioning - the latter being information on the storage. Since ED just seemed to be worried about the beginning of the storage, it would seem you'd be good only zeroing the first MB.
"dd if=./install-nobat.img of=/dev/sdj bs=1M; sync" also starts writing content at the very beginning.
