GPD Pocket 2 Announced

How do you hover or right click with a capacitive touchscreen only? I'd imagine it may be able to detect hover, but you'd need a modifier key would be needed to right click. And to drag versus moving the mouse, it'd be very awkward if you needed to hover to move the mouse without dragging. Maybe it uses a timed hold to click.

If windows CE taught me anything, you'll long tap to get top "right click", but hover its usually our of the window.

I hope they reconsider adding a mouse nub, and fixing the fn+arrows. I could probably make do with the other bits tough

glad i waited for the 2, now there's expandable storage!

but maybe i should wait for the improved keyboard layout on 3...

I preordered and received the GPD Win 1 and win 2 in the same time span of my pyra preorder which doesn't have a solid estimate for when it might be done.

A bit of coordination with GPD, although probably detrimental at this point, might not be the worst of ideas for future projects.

On the other side, A LOT GPD Win batteries seem to puff after 1 year of usage (some even earlier) whereas most of the Pandora batteries from 2013 still work fine.
I can't even stock more GPD Win batteries, as they're not being produced anymore and the 50 I had sold out after about a month.

So yes, while you can still use the old Pandora, you might not be able to use the GPD Win anymore some time soon...

Speed is not everything. I hope we can achieve the same with the Pyra what we achieved with the Pandora. The battery manufacturer is the very same :)

ED you are so right. The battery on my GPD Pocket is giving me fits. I actually moved back to my pandora for portable work because the battery still works after all these years.

I cannot wait for my Pyra!!!

I appreciate the desire for a long term device, but you still have to keep in mind that tech moves on quite quick. We've heard over and over how old the OMAP is, but connectors also change, and DisplayPort and USB-C is starting to appear on devices and that's not something you can easily add into the pyra.

I'm not sure what the costs would have been if you'd have tried an iterative process versus an all-out (ie, once you got the 2gb running, started selling them whilst working on the 4gb, then the 4g modem boards...). Though I guess if you're still waiting for cases any way...

I wouldn't see 1 year usage as a longterm device...
I usually use my Laptops around 6 years before I upgrade to a new one.

And yes, the Pyra can be upgraded with USB-C if need be.
I want to rework the case later anyways, so a mainboard update with USB-C would be possible.

The Gpd Win Batterie fell out after one year of usage??
After 1 yeahr of constant usage?? “24/7”
My Win still works great,

Mybe if this thing ever fail, I would by me a proper gaming notebook because I bought a lot of Games for the GPD via Steam and GOG..

Not every battery, but I certainly never sold a device before which had such a high battery failure rate as the GPD Win.

I agree, but they, to me, are just heading down the iterative route. Release something, try and fix some bits and release again.
But yes, most of my kit generally is used for quite a few years.

That's great, and I'm not saying it couldn't; I just hope that you don't lose out to these companies with a faster turnaround

I was not aware the battery was such a design bottleneck on the pandora/pyra. Thought that was one of the first parts to be done, and was an outsourced part anyway.

Coordination doesn't mean handing the project over. Maybe step back a bit from the glass house stone throwing. The parts that have historically caused issues on the pandora/pyra are the parts that GPD does well.

Well even if my GPD Win fails some time: as long as it’s works, it’s pretty cool,
And whiteout the GPD I hadn’t buyd the Deponia Games, Farming Simulator 2013, Spintires, Euro Truck Simulator etc, as I wasn’t interested anymore in Computer Gaming,
The Gpd brought Computer Games on a Handheld..

Finally I found a solution to drive Unimog whyle I drive Unimog :)

? Why should the battery be an issue? No one said that, only that the battery on the GPD Win seems to have a lot of issues.

I think it's a mixed bag. The GPD Win had a lot better designed case than the Pyra and Pandora. I had hoped that Form Action would be able to upgrade our Pandora design to keep functionality but make it look better.
Didn't work, but I still plan to work on that in the future.

The keyboard depends on the user. Some like clicky domecaps, some like a rubbermat better.

The DPad of the Pandora is still a lot better than on the GPD Win.
The nubs of the Pandora have issues, as we all know, but while I like the Vita's nubs (the one the GPD Win uses) for gaming, I don't like how the mouse mode is implemented (it has one speed which can be changed with a button press, it doesn't use the analog functionality of the sticks at all)

The battery is a lot worse on the GPD Win, as it fails and puffs often and pretty early in it's lifetime.

Cooling is a lot better in the Win - mostly because they have a better case company and can easily do changes whereas I am afraid even a small change will delay the case for months, so I have to squeeze a good cooling into our existing environment.
As mentioned, as soon as the money is there, I plan to work on improvements maybe with a design company around my area.

And maybe with the help of the community. Once the case files are out and the Pyras are in the hands of users, I can imagine suggestions will come

LCD Cables fail in both systems, so that's another draw :)

Not sure what you mean with the glass house. I'm not sitting here and throwing stones, I am just stating what I think is good and not so good, but both for the Pandora/Pyra and the GPDs.
There's no bashing going on here.

I'm also not sure what you think GPD fixed that the Pandora had issues with (except for the disaster in Britain...)

The GPD Win has the better case, analog sticks and faster SoC (which is not really a fix, as the Pandora was fast when it was shipped as well), but the DPad and battery is worse.
The keyboard depends on whatever you prefer.

I don't think the GPD Win is a better device or a "fixed" Pandora. It's a similar device with different use cases and other issues.

The perfect device would be a mixture of both :)

That said, the missing trackpoint and weird keyboard layout still is an issue in my opinion for the GPD Pocket 2.
The GPD Pocket 1 did better.

I started off saying that 2 iterations of a device came and gone since I preordered the pyra and still don't know when it's comming. GPD if anything, can get a certain level of quality out the door, so maybe you should work with them because of that. You came back saying something that came off as 'GPD can release devices, but they have shite batteries' almost snuffing your nose at the idea. That sounds like shots fired to me.

There are things they do well, such as you noted, their case design. The case was and still is a major holdup with both the pyra and pandora. Issue as in the hold up, or build quality in general in reference to the pandora. Cooling looks to be a stuggle, and even from the early days when all we had was numbers on paper, it looked to some of us it was going to be a problem, but we were left with claims it wouldn't be a big deal, you mentioned above, that is one of their strengths. They also don't seem to have any problems designing a pcb relatively quickly and mostly without any major errors.Take those strengths, show them what you want as far as controller (minus analog) and keyboard design, as that is definitely one of their weaknesses and very much one of your strengths.

It's not a 'you vs them', it could be a best of both worlds, the perfect device as you mentioned. Add your strengths with their strengths.

There is a point where quality over quantity has it's limits. I personally think that point is when that metric starts getting measured in multiple years.

It's still only a suggestion; why would they be interested in working with ED rather than just stealing his ideas?

As for the concern, I'm sure they are completely aware of the pandora/pyra projects at this point. If the really wanted to, they could have easily stolen the idea already. They made an almost 1:1 replica of a 3ds with different parts.

As to why would they be interested, the pandora/pyra is the 'holy grail' of this type of device to their main target audience. While not perfect, with their help, I feel it could be. I'm fairly confident they would entertain the idea if presented. Also, the worst they could do is say no.
