GPD Win (x86 Computer / Palmtop)


You are aware of the amount of current you'd need to get from the bottom area to the top, right? A flex cable probably won't do here.

The top case used as a heat sink wouldn't work well enough. In fact I believe GPD trialed using a metal bottom case for cooling. People that modded tablets connecting the SOC to the back metal case still had the SOC throttle when pushed for gaming.

These things are pushed to the limit for gaming use, a fan is required and that would be difficult to put in the lid.
Even the Shield Portable has a fan for it's Tegra 4 quad A15 SOC (actually a bigger fan than in the WIN).. Smartphones that use the Snapdragon 810 820's ended up getting heatpipes put in them (I think connected to the metal back case). Even that resulted in only slightly delaying thermal throttling. I think I saw a video with one of these smartphpones that thermally throttled when pushed within 10 minutes

The fact is, that with the current (may change for future SOCs) modern top end SOCs , a fan is required to get sustained (or lengthy) full performance out of them

Of course newer SOCs tend to be more effiient and can deliver more performance for less power, so you could limit them to use less power and still be better performing. ie limited to not reach their top end performance. Frustrating to the end user who paid for that SOC though and expects all it's power - especially for gaming

There are a number of atom STBs get away with a simple metal heatspreader, and those are inside a sealed plastic box without any airflow. I believe an aluminum lid exposed to the outside would be sufficient to reject heat at least as well as the heatpipe and tiny fan they're using now. I only wish I had an 4W device I could tear apart to test my theory.

The answer is they don't get away with it. They throttle when pushed hard

Also, do you rememeber the guy that had a Cherry Trail tablet and modded it so that the SOC connected to the back metal case. Thats a huge metal case. It worked better, but after a little heavy gaming, it still thermally throttled. As I said , GPD tried this already when they went for a metal bottom case . Didn't work. Thta was the last thing they tried before going with the fan

If it were a pure UMPC, no problem, you could just limit it without many people being upset. But for gaming , there are always those that push it hard and expect it's full performance. Thjis sin't limited to Intel, as I said before , the same with Snapdragons 810-820, Tegra's and even Exynos. It might change with the latest and future generations with smaller node? sizes - don't know

It's basically how tablets with connected keyboard work, especially in designs that have a large secondary battery in the bottom half which charges/powers to screen/tablet half while connected. If the hinge were made permanent you wouldn't need any battery at all in the top half.
If only someone made tablets with permanently attached keyboards, and where the battery is in the keyboard portion.
 
An obvious hurdle would be having a curled up cable through the hinge that can handle the power requirements of the SoC.

Run a power cable through the middle, like how the antenna cable works on the Pandora?

Could always use a bearing/brush design and transmit the power directly through rubbing contacts in the hinge. After all, it's just 2 connections +/-. A small battery or capacitor in the top unit could even out the power flow during rotation (contact static/interference). If you're going to dream up a new wheel, why not?

The whole question of throttling with powerful mobile systems makes me think that the idea of a detachable mini tablet containing the screen & SOC would be a great design choice. It could be fanless & underclocked with a metal back as a heat spreader when in mobile mode, probably still giving awesome handheld performance. The base unit would comprise of Keyboard / Gaming Controls / USB slots / SD Slot / Bluetooth etc.

A dock with active cooling could be produced for use in 'desktop' / full power mode, if the dock was designed correctly it would ensure the screen remained visible for table top use or have the option of connecting to a TV / Monitor.
 
My GPD Win has some issues with its windows install to the point the sfc is inoperable, and Windows Update is nonfunctional. Does anyone know the best place to get the driver packages for a reinstall?

Have a look at (all of) this thread, some guy called Evil Dragon posted some files here that might be able to help you :)
 
Apparently GPD have sold 30K GPD WINs in the last 6-7 months, not bad. They have also grown from about 25 staff 1-1.5 years ago to 150 now. It seems the XD and WIN brought enough cash in to allow them to expand

They also said that they design and develop their products and outsource the manufacturing

Note: they did tell me they sold 300K WINs , but I'm guessing they mistakenly added an extra zero

Hm, good question. They would work for a while, but when they get dirty, oxidate, etc., you will run into problems.

That's great :) (I wish I had a staff of 25 to begin with, as that would've sped up the Pyra a lot!)

I'd still take that a bit carefully... I've sold about 400 GPD Wins so far in Europe and looking at Dingoonity, member numbers also haven't exploded.
So either they sold most of them in Japan... or it's a bit exaggerated (which would be normal for chinese companies :))

That said, most WINs were sold to Japan if you take the Indiegogo crowdfunding as a barometer. Over 60% went to Japan. This is why I have asked you a few times if you plan to market the Pyra to Japan when it's ready for retail.

P.S Of course I imagine a lot have been sold to their home Chinese market

Thanks, both the sfc and dicm commands will error off, and Windows Update will spool up but not actually execute the update. The chkdsk pass is clearing it, so I'm hoping a clean re-install will get it sorted.

I don't know how much interest there would be in the Pyra in Japan. My understanding is that there aren't really many people interested in Linux devices there, so although they love tiny handheld computers, they really only want Windows ones. I would love to be wrong. Maybe @ekianjo or someone else with real knowledge can speak up. The price might also limit sales in that market

As I said in the post below, even the Gemini PDA which runs Linux had a lot of backers from Japan. The Japanese love their UMPCs no matter the OS

Also, in regards to price etc, GPD have crowdfunded both the WIN and the Pocket in Japan on a Japan only crowdfunding site called Makuake. Both campaigns are currently 4th and 5th in the all time most funded campaigns list. The real kicker is that GPD charged a lot more on Makauke than they did on Indkiegogo, The Pocket is currently on Makuake for $602 USD

Not sure it was on makuake, but i remember issues for gpdwin with the terms on the crowdfunding platform were pretty bad for the seller if you're late, you better not start that before you have units that are ready i think...

That was the Chinese crowdfunding platform JD.com. ie not Makuake

That said, I think stick with western crowdfunding sites, it didn't seem to me that the Japanese were shy of them. They were after all the majority of backers on Indiegogo for the WIN, Pocket etc

What happened with GPD is that they saw that most Indiegogo backers of the WIN were from Japan (like 60%). So after the Indiegogo campaign they started via a third party company another crowdfunding in Japan via Makuake. I guess you could say they squeezed that juicy fruit dry :)
