Pyra vs GPD WIN

Thanks, I missed that.

As for whether who or what is the issue is moot. All reviews are just opinions, and not everyone is going to agree.
And some reviews are just ridiculously unfounded and with no prior research whatsoever.
You can't give a caveman a blender and expect him to understand it right away, then again you wouldn't expect him to review it in the first place.

Some reviews are unfounded: absolutely. However, that review discussed quite a few aspects and had some valid points.

Regarding cavemen. If I was a caveman, I would value the opinion of a fellow caveman. They would likely have similar needs and viewpoints to myself. But I'd also seek reviews from chimps and bonobos too, as they'd likely have a different perspective that i could learn from

He isn't even trying to type with his thumbs, doesn't seem to have understood the term "handheld" and I also have to quote jeeks here:
"i'm assuming this thing is running an arm processor."
i like hardware reviewers that pretend there aren't any spec sheets around :D but yeah, wrong youtuber for this thing.

I've never seen anything from this guy, are his reviews always... kind of dumb?

Just "the wrong reviewer". He didn't exactly choose it.

I don't like censorship, but I do like new products to get a fair chance. I hope the Pyra gets some really good, well-informed reviews.

I saw another review for the GPD, Steve Benway, I believe. He didn't even know what the USB-C was, but still loved the device.

I hate to say it, but there won't be any reviewer outside of the community that will give the Pyra a good review. They will note aging features without appreciating the design and the community driven nature of it.

Wendell from Level 1 tech is our guy.

A modern car reviewer might look at a restored '66 Corvette, complain about the cost, the noise, the fuel consumption, lack of features like heated seats and CD player, and he would be 100% correct on all accounts.
The restored Corvette isn't *for* general review. It's a very special person that is interested in such a vehicle and it really should only be reviewed in the circles where it makes sense to.

Very good analogy. So is there some tech guy focusing on Linux, open hardware (preferably no total FLOSS fanatic), versatility and flexibility over "specs", etc...?
How about a small mention on

http://distrowatch.com
http://www.linux.org
http://www.unix.com/debian/
?

That's what separates the GPD Win from the Pyra for me. With Windows they're aiming for a more 'mainstream' market. On the other hand, I think most Pyra enthusiasts fairly quickly identify themselves with it... It's less about the hardware itself, but more about the openness and community surrounding it.

It's in all our own hands whether to make or break the Pyra, and not just some 2-bit reviewer. We need to tell everyone and anyone, who is willing to listen, all about it.

Yes and No, when the reviewer is slating a device because of an issue that is user error/ignorance I have a real issue.

When the Pandora was reviewed a few were negative because it wasn't plug and play, they expected to turn it on and be playing emulators straight out of the box.

Because the Pandora is more than just a games console it was always going to require some user expertise, for me as a Windows user that was part of the fun of using it, to others it was a hindrance.

I can see the Pyra having the same love / hate effect on reviewers, some will tinker and get it working, others will just moan that it requires work and dismiss it.

Whoever the Pyra is sent to though it should be made clear that they highlight the forums for any user issues, ANY Pyra owner would be more than welcome here and I don't think we would give them a hard time for asking what they think may be a stupid question.

I would also try to make sure whoever receives a Pyra gets in touch while reviewing it if they get an issue rather than just plough on.

Just give them a demo version loaded up with emulators, and a web browser. Easy enough to have the base debian install include them.
