Why Wait For Gp3x? Great $ Making Opportunity - Let Us Invest In


Heres a thought... what about a console built upon the same principles as the gp2x... ie ability to read the sd cards and run the gpe's from the SD cards? Sort of a beefier gp2x for the home scene. faster processer able to run the psx titles full speed, etc?

All you would have to have is an SD card input (or two) and a bunch of USB inputs. Output to a TV, powered by a plug.

That way you could play w/ the gp2x on the go, come home, pop the SD card into your home console and continue where you left off. Plus you could play all the psx titles full speed and other roms that require too much ram, etc...

Sort of a home version complement to the gp2x. Make a fortune off that, use that money to fund the Open3X portable unit.

(Squidge, you rule btw. That FBA2x emulator rocks!)

and I'm not even going to comment on all of the naysayers and geniuses out there...

Beefier gp2x.. me like! Would it fit in the existing case? Virtualcogs have no case design yet...

Back on-topic ?

For interest I use the LX800 daily and our system draws 1.6A @ 24v
That includes a 1024x768 tft + Backlight + Fibre media convertor..
We estimate the actual processor board draws just over 0.4A - I'm hammering its capacilities... guess power used will also depend on other factors (I'm not a hw engineer).

There _is_ hw acceleration (ie blitter) which is not very well supported, but no 3d acceleration.

So I would say it would be unuseable for a portable gaming platform.

However it is a great little processor board and it's good to take binaries from my laptop and run them directly on the target :)

Whatever the future holds for gaming displays, I hope this is the end for 320x240 resolution -very limited - I also use the LX800 on another project with an NEC tft (640x480) and it's a powerful little system - albeit the display is 170mm diagonal so too big to carry around.

0.4A * 24v is still 9,6 Watts :(

So just design and fabricate a different case for the Nokia tablet - one with better gamepad and right-hand side buttons.

Seriously, those buttons are a poor substitute for a d-pad or joystick.

Has that design actually been through production? If so, what's the interface on the buttons? Is it something people can actually buy? Details please >_> It does look nice, although it could use shoulder buttons too.

Also, please show me a device with a high clocked ARM A8 Cortex. Nokia N800 has a 330MHz OMAP2420, which is ARM v6 (not v7 like the Cortex) and isn't really very high clocked at all. I'm interested in seeing specs for an ARM tablet device that could potentially emulate Nintendo DS.

Hmmmm...... I wonder if this [link] would help the creator of this topic at all. The site even has a samsung 4.3" 16:9 touchscreen display. But you should only use it if you really hate davec, not for real emulation.

I kind of like the virtual cog thingy-ma-jigger. It seems cool, but there is no case, there are 2 dpads (one is placed where the action buttons should be, and, this will sound cliche, but the screen would not be adequate for emulation. It seems promising though, and I would love to see the outcome of that project. There is another thing that worries me about it though - there is too much being added to it. I mean, what's all this "gps, wireless, camera, touchscreen, built-in microphone, microphone jack, ethernet, accelerometers, gyros, etc" bullcrap? Why would anybody want to waste so much money on one product?

Here is what a normal human being would require:

A 200Mhz minimum processor
Some hardware acceleration
A minimum or 64MB of RAM
A source of power (preferably AA's, I guess)
A minimum screen size of 3 inches
A minimum screen resolution of 320x240 (touchscreen is not needed, but it would be a welcomed feature)
A USB port
A memory slot, or some people would like memory built-in
Possibly some sort of wireless capabilities as wireless chips are quite cheap nowadays (although it would add vast possibilities to new wireless homebrew, and homebrew browsers)
Similar button types and layouts to that of the SNES, including a normal dpad
A maximum price of $200

Now, most of these things are already in the gp2x, but there are some things that are still missing that would have made it interesting to not just the people of this forum, but everyday people.

Numbers are useless without real hardware to back it up.
Also 'normal' people are NOT interested in a GP2X. They want simple limited devices that do (well) exactly what their manufacturer intended.

Here's what should be done;

Swap the current MMSP2 Cpu for the MMSP3D Cpu. Stock Clock 360Mhz.
A single BGA type DDR chip, probably around 128MB of 200Mhz RAM.
A LCD like the current one. Any bigger and the system gets too bulky.
A !@#$%^ Normal D-Pad. + type or * type
No speakers. No point.
Li-ION Polymer battery, in A REMOVABLE MODULE. THAT CAN ALSO BE SWAPPED FOR A 2* AA UNIT.
(reduces runtime when on NiMH)
VGA Out. (Variable Frequency output for TV's and Multisynch monitors)
USB Highspeed 480MBps Host capability. Type 'A' Port on top or bottom of unit.
USB Device, Mini-Type B connector (standard) on top or bottom of unit.
All other power / video / audio / multi connectors on top or bottom of unit.

Better battery power indicator, perhaps a RGB LED that goes from green to red, gradually.

In short the current GP2X is the right idea, just done clunkyly like the old DMG-01 Gameboys.

Big, chunky, ugly, battery hungry and totally superior to everything else in its class.

The Next system should repeat the winning formula with some upgrades and a similar price point.

Re. Design, Heh no it's just my Gimp (like Photoshop) modification of the n770 for what i wish for the N800 successor in 2008. It's not real :)

Re. N800, From the feedback i've gotten on the N800, it's too slow for straight unoptimized ports of stuff we want like SNES, UAE, DosBox. Also the 2420 can't handle 800x480 with its internal framebuffer controller, so N800 has a slow external one.

I don't expect we'll see any 3430 devices until 2008. Are there any other (simpler) Cortex A8 SOCs besides TI? With mplayer you don't need any of the video acceleration hardware.

Wow, that's some powerful stuff you got on that list. I'm sure it wouldn't be even near the price of the gp2x now. Unless, of course, things keep going like they are and electronics components get simpler and cheaper.

I've never used headphones with the gp2x, so speakers are a BIG point for me. The ones in the 2X are ample also. I like to hear whats going on around me whilst using the 2X, and I can't do that easily with headphones (plus the hassle of constant removal and refitting every time you move).
