What Are Your Top 5 Gp32 Mame Games?

Corr! I've been tempted to buy one for a long while but have been put off by the thumbstick issue.. but Ghouls 'n' Ghosts arcade on a handheld, that would be amazing!

Right, won't hijack this good thread with my own personal G'n'G passion. Time to use that popular Search function..

Currently, my favorites are,

1. Juno First
2. Gemini Wing
3. Side Arms
4. Tempest
5. Gyruss

Why don't those aliens leave us alone!!

My top five are:

1). 1943
2). Galaga
3). Juno First
4). Timepilot
5). Pooyan

But this list tends to chop and change a bit.

Juno First was an accidental discovery - never played or saw it at the arcades. It's quite a cool shooter - like a vertical Defender!
The new MAME GP32 2.0 now has the gun sound implemented and it runs at full speed (love those games that ran originally at 30FPS!) with sound so it's all groovy.

Pooyan... I love shooting down those Wolves!

1943 is a classic shooter. It's got the powerups, loads of enemies and big bosses all in a nice WWII setting. :D

And Galaga! How can you not have it in your top 5? Love to get this going at full speed with sound at 60FPS. Maybe.

Any other top 5s? I'll use the list of people's favourites as a guide on what to look at for improvements for further GP32 MAME releases.

For my WIP for MAME 2.1, I've done some futher optimizations for 1943, Gunsmoke and GnG but it's minor.
I'm trying to get Data East 16-bit games going with sound but they need loads of RAM. The Hu6280 core is in place. Hopefully Franxis can use this for the GP2X version .

The other thing I'm interested in implementing would be samples so I'll have a look at that soon. Zaxxon with sound! Galaga and Bosconian with bangs! :)

(Actually that reminds me, some speedups for Bosconian wouldn't go astray... Pity DrZ80 doesn't seem to be happy with this game!)

I would like to have Galaga in my list, but I haven't been able to get it to work yet. It might be my configuration. :(
It's most likely that your ROM is not the correct version. It needs to be from MAME 0.34.

People will tell you that it needs to be "converted". The "conversion" process is actually just a renaming process of the files contained within the ZIP file. However with some games, there's more to it than this and you need a different subset of files in the ZIP all together.
This is because games get redumped - so the image of the files is different. No "conversion" process is possible in this case.

So, for Galaga you need a GALAGA.ZIP. The contents of the ZIP file should be:

Code:
Archive: galaga.zip
    testing: 04d_g06.bin OK
    testing: 04e_g05.bin OK
    testing: 04h_g04.bin OK
    testing: 04j_g03.bin OK
    testing: 04k_g02.bin OK
    testing: 04m_g01.bin OK
    testing: 07e_g10.bin OK
    testing: 07h_g09.bin OK
    testing: 07m_g08.bin OK
    testing: 1c.bin OK
    testing: 1d.bin OK
    testing: 2n.bin OK
    testing: 5n.bin OK
No errors detected in compressed data of galaga.zip.

GP32 (and GP2X) MAME is expecting the following, the order doesn't matter:
(this is directly from the code)

Code:
ROM_START( galaga_rom )
ROM_LOAD( "04m_g01.bin", 0x0000, 0x1000, 0xa3a0f743 )
ROM_LOAD( "04k_g02.bin", 0x1000, 0x1000, 0x43bb0d5c )
ROM_LOAD( "04j_g03.bin", 0x2000, 0x1000, 0x753ce503 )
ROM_LOAD( "04h_g04.bin", 0x3000, 0x1000, 0x83874442 )
ROM_LOAD( "07m_g08.bin", 0x0000, 0x1000, 0x58b2f47c )
ROM_LOAD( "07e_g10.bin", 0x1000, 0x1000, 0xad447c80 )
ROM_LOAD( "07h_g09.bin", 0x2000, 0x1000, 0xdd6f1afc )
ROM_LOAD( "5n.bin", 0x0000, 0x0020, 0x54603c6b )
ROM_LOAD( "2n.bin", 0x0020, 0x0100, 0xa547d33b )
ROM_LOAD( "1c.bin", 0x0120, 0x0100, 0xb6f585fb )
ROM_LOAD( "5c.bin", 0x0220, 0x0100, 0x8bd565f6 )
ROM_LOAD( "04e_g05.bin", 0x0000, 0x1000, 0x3102fccd )
ROM_LOAD( "04d_g06.bin", 0x0000, 0x1000, 0x8995088d )
ROM_LOAD( "1d.bin", 0x0000, 0x0100, 0x86d92b24 )

Note the last value in the list. This is the CRC for the file - a check digit. This is how MAME validates that the file actually is the correct file.
ie. the first file "04m_g01.bin" has a CRC of "a3a0f743" (ignore the 0x).

The CRC of the file in galaga.zip must match this value.
ie.
Code:
> crc32 04m_g01.bin
a3a0f743

crc32 is a utility that you can run (under Unix or Mac OS X).
Winzip (I think) will automatically display this when you examine the contents of a ZIP file.

Basically, make sure that all these CRCs match and all will be good.

Hope this helps! :)

I'd like to revive this thread just for the hell of it. And to see who the GP32 MAME users are...

Like I said earlier, my list chops and changes:

1). 1942
2). Ghouls 'n Ghosts
3). Star Wars
4). Mr Do
5). Tutankham

I've noticed that my own list tends to be the earlier games - probably because the more advanced games are really as playable on the GP32.

1942 is great (as is 1943). I play these in rotated mode and my <start> button is getting a bit flakey now because of all the shooting.
(Does anyone have spare membranes? Or a dead GP32 they'd like to get rid of for parts?)

Star Wars has always been fun. I've actually also got Empire Strikes Back working now - which is just a fun to play.

Ghouls 'n Ghosts is great - but I find it quite difficult. I don't think I've ever seen stage 3 (I usually play with one coin only with no continues). I'm trying to get this faster too by using the tilemap system.

Mr Do is always heaps of fun. I tried explaining what this game is about to a friend once. He just gave me strange looks.

Tutankham is an under rated Konami classic. It's difficult but really neat. Reminds me of Time Bandit from the Coco & Atari ST. Not sure which came first? Must be close...
