What a loose of faith in humanity. Don't be so gloom, don't generalize, not all is lost... In some countries news are not at 6 o'clock. Otherwise, yes.
But they won't lose McDonalds for long. Putin will simply
expropiate McDonalds and put a friend on top or
force the Russian executives to carry on. The burger flippers are already Russians.
In the soviet era it was a clash of two economic systems, centralized economy were a party wrote 5 year plans and decided what the people had to consume, whereas in the west private monopolists improvised what people had to consume in a way that looked like consumers were deciding something. Since McDonalds did not help to feed people compared to a factory mensa or whatever, there were no McDonalds in USSR. And long queues in the first McDonalds in Moscow the day it opened.
But now it's no longer soviet times, and Putin's authoritarism is capitallistic. The only point is can he get enough beef and potatoes to run McDonalds ? And Russia is big enough to get them. India is already saying they will take the lower prices and buy more oil from Russia (and I don't know if they can afford to pay the higher price elsewhere, so not unlike the EU maybe?). And China most likely will end up buying the same amounts of stuff from Russia it planned to buy for lower prices, call itself neutral (not helping or sanctioning) and pocket some profits.
There was this
story on slashdot on Putin threatening Apple and Google executives in Russia to ban apps that pretended to help voters control electoral recounts. America is not exporting beff and potatoes to Russia, it just exports an ethereal brand, that only gives them money because Putin keeps recognizing trademark treaties. If we talk about aviation spare parts, well maybe these sanctions can be felt in Russia. And there're going to be more examples. But McDonalds ? Anyone can paint a clown in a restaurant.
Edit: protesters might overthrow Putin, or create enough pressure for him to change policy, or make it just easier for the oligarchs to remove him, or whatever. But they do it because they want to avoid war, not because of sanctions. None runs from police because he wants a Big Mac. Yet western sanctions are OK, not because of its effects on Russia, but because they pressure for the west to be more autonomous.
