Exophase
Nothing good will ever come of Exophase.
It's not a UMPC, because above all it isn't a PC (it's not x86). That's not going to stop everyone from calling it one though.
Yes so i prefer say 'Gaming Pocket Computer' i hate abbreviationExophase said:It's not a UMPC, because above all it isn't a PC (it's not x86). That's not going to stop everyone from calling it one though.
chad78 said:Sphinxter said:No more umpc than a blackberry is, any keyboard smaller than an eeepc is of no practical use for anything but games unless you're a masochist and that game had better not call for too much typing, the ram size alone and lack of swap will cripple most productivity apps. Just because something can doesn't mean it should. The few things it will be good for such as file management will put it heads above other game players but as a umpc it does not rise to zaurus level.
You've obviously never used a Nokia Internet Tablet. These things are the same size (practically - actually a little smaller) than the Pandora - and they work just fine as a UMPC. I got a fold out BT keyboard for my N800 (the one with no keyboard built it) so typing wouldn't be an issue - but even before I got that - it did a lot of stuff. If someone ports Maemo to it, or if whatever OS the Pandora runs is similiar, it should be just fine. The main thing will be a thumb virtual (on screen) keyboard. The one on the N800 is as close to perfect as I've seen. Big enough to type on with even my fat fingers.
There's no Blackberry as powerful as the Pandora. Even the so-called "iPhone killer" model that's about to come out doesn't compare.
You can do a lot more with the RAM that it has than you think. Again, I point to the N800, whose is less powerful, and can do a ton of stuff.
Look, if the thing can run Ubuntu, and it can, if it can run Firefox 3, and it can, if it can run Mplayer, and it can, if it can run Maemo, and it should be able to, it's a UMPC.
It's a game system - it's a PMP - it's a MID - and it's a UMPC. Only thing it's not is a cell phone.
You got to remember - UMPC ≠ Desktop replacement nor does UMPC ≠ Eee PC. The Eee PC is a sub-subnotebook. It's not a UMPC. A UMPC should, in theory, fit in a normal human's pants pocket. Unless that human is Jared before Subway - the Eee PC ain't fittin.
.
Yeah right, running maemo is a standard and an ultra mobile pc is not a pc, a palm, my pager and most phones fit your definition.

Heh... Patience, young Jedi. Yours will come soon enough (Yeah, yeah, I know...easy enough for me to say, but it's all true all the same... )TaG said:Ferf**ks sake will you all stop telling the whole world about Pandora until after I/we have got our grubby mitts on one!
"Palmtop Computer" is more accurate. It's what I tell people when I explain just what they're looking atExophase said:It's not a UMPC, because above all it isn't a PC (it's not x86). That's not going to stop everyone from calling it one though.
Chip said:Personally, I don't think it matters what labels you slap on to the Pandora.
However, if you're going to have the argument anyway then you might as well get the terminology right. The acronym "UMPC" was coined by Microsoft, and refers to any device which uses a 5-7" display (min. 800x480 res.), weighs less than two pounds, and runs one of several versions of Windows Vista (latest spec).
By the colloquial definition, Pandora clearly qualifies. By the MS definition, it does not. All you have to figure out is which side you're on.
It might not matter, but to me Pandora is a Portable Videogames Console, just like the PSP, only much more powerful and with PC capabilities.
I think Apple only called their stuff PCs when they wanted to go that particular advertising route, then they realized they wanted to distance themselves from PCs so they could sling dirt all over them. If we're not going to consider the assortment of hardware in the original IBM PC (of which to this day PCs are still roughly compatible) to be what "PC" means then exactly what should we call that?Svartalf said:"Palmtop Computer" is more accurate. when I show off my N800. Furthermore, "PC" being x86 only is a thing that came of things over the years
as the term applied to a LOT of different machines, including Macs.
Read the article. He's talking about the guts of a smart phone - and, yes, that's what the Pandora is made of. All the stuff that's in the Pandora will eventually be in a smart phone. He makes it very clear that's what he's talking about.Sphinxter said:And so factual

Devices like these are nothing much more than smartphones running Linux and placed in notebook casings. I sound very negative when saying that but it shouldn’t be taken that way

Nokia never stops talking about the evolution of the mobile phone into the computer, Celio Redfly is a product based on the same principle, and for many people in developing countries, the mobile phone is the only computer they use. One of the first UMPCs, the Pepper Pad was based on the same CPU that you will now find in the HTC Advantage and the Sharp Zaurus followed the same idea.

The Pandora open-source mobile computing development is based on a Cortex A8 CPU (as is being used in Android mobile phone platforms) and the PowerVR graphics solutions (as is used by Intel in their Poulsbo graphics engine) and is an early example of what can be done.
No where does he state - or imply - that the Pandora is a smart phone. Merely that it highlights what a smartphone can be. In fact, some people on this forum have asked why cell phone isn't one of the things the Pandora is.
Read it, what it lacks in fact it makes up for in lack of logic. So it has the guts of a smartphone but it isn't a smartphone because the guts that make a phone a phone are missing. Oh he means it has the same cpu architecture that someone elses phone uses which makes them the same. pffft. How can it even be the guts of a smartphone when you say, "eventually be in a smart phone", it's not there yet so it's not the guts of a smartphone now is it?
Wasn't the whole UMPC thing started by Microsoft on the Origami project and one of the basic qualifications was it 1 had to sub for a pc and 2 it had to run windows which makes pandora as far from UMPC as you can get?

Spoken like a cyber bully.
HAHA, oh wow. Micro$ucks? Haven't heard that one yet! Grrrrr, I'm an internet cool guy, I hate microsoft and use the dollar sign instead of the S!sindbad said:Technically though, Sphinxter is right. Blame Micro$ucks for another misleading and useless acronym.
While you might be right about the terminology (MS came up with it, yes...), and while Chad might've been a bit over the top calling you a troll and an idiot, you should be cautious about flinging about "cyber bully" at other people, Sphinxter. I distinctly remember a certain forum member that could be accused of that very accolade himself when he took to a disliking of me on a subject and just wouldn't shut up and back off when the thread originator asked nicely to cease and desist.Sphinxter said:Spoken like a cyber bully.

Just trying to avoid trademarks, I've been warned before.

That's pretty disturbing actually :huh:jbr said:Ha. Once someone sent a subpoena to my ISP to get my address so he could sue me over using a traditional "alien head" shape as my avatar on a forum. The guy wasn't even associated with Alienware, Area-51, or any extraterrestrial planets. I don't think ISPs even respond to all the silly subpoenas they get now, though.
