I am already a devout Discordian, so I am confident that Eris will spit some chaos their way eventually.

Just wish I could play some Azure Dreams (PSX) while I wait.

I am sympathetic to your situation, as being robbed is something that shouldn't happen to anyone, but I love the 'no insurance, I'm a broke student' plea, which was preceded by a list of expensive items totalling about $2000 or so!

i'm a broke student, £15000 worth of insurance is about £30 a year, that wouldn't cover things being left in a van though, generally vans are pretty easy to break into

Yeah, I'm not a broke student and I have absolutely no insurance on things left in a vehicle. Companies just don't offer it, and those that do charge an arm/leg/firstborn combo for it. I've got a $40 a month plus $8 insurance storage box in a secure lot somewhere for that sort of thing.

I agree that insurance against theft are mostly worthless (very expensive and with many limitations) but even with your simple insurance you are at least not affraid to call cops ;)

If nothing else, it'll alert the police to the seriousness of the offense :p

Not sure if the outcome will be the desired one, though.

Lets all keep an eye out for some noob penis on this forum asking "how do I install windows on my Pandora that has angstrom and Gentoo installed?". I seriously hope you can catch the git. I got my boiler stolen in the middle of winter when I was hideously ill - 2 months without heating or hot water added to poor health made it very nearly man slaughter. I got the police involved (they are worse than useless normally). It was obvious it was the same guys that installed the thing the week before, but do they dust for prints or take DNA samples? Nope. I truly sympathise. If I was a billionaire I'd probably even get you some new equipment, as it is all I can offer is some replacement fungus and mould samples from my kitchen and body - let me know if you are interested.

Items gained over many years of collection. The microbiology equipment was a gift from my brother.

    @TitanUranus:

lol, thank you for the offer of, uh, replacement mould. Unfortunately the bacteria I was studying was a somewhat less common variety that had been subjected to specific environmental stimuli for the project I am involved in, and the loss of my work is my real issue with the samples being taken. As soon as I get my next financial aid check or pick up some extra hours at work, I'll be able to replace enough of the stolen equipment to restart my research, and I still have until December to produce and study the results.

Anyway I'm not looking for handouts, just pissed, I waited for this thing for a long time and it sucks to have it snatched like that.

Thank you guys for your support, advice, and encouragement!

I did not leave it at that, the result was months upon months of drama that doesn't really have any bearing here so I omitted it.

There are three problems with involving the police. The first, as I mentioned, is lack of insurance. The second, which I also mentioned, is the tendency of the local police to only involve themselves in ways that make the situation worse and/or make the victim suffer a little more. The third, and most compelling reason, is that I am not supposed to be staying at the place I am staying while I find my new home, and while my friend is okay with me staying there, his landlord, who lives next door, is not. If his landlord discovers I am staying, he has already said he will hike the rent beyond what my friend can afford to pay.

Sadly, police involvement isn't going to help me here. I'll just have to slowly rebuild my collection of awesome things back up from scratch again.

Also, don't think I mentioned it, but whoever robbed me also (I think) added sugar or something to the gas tank, and I could not get my van started following the robbery. However, on a mechanic friend's recommendation, I added Octane to the tank, and after running really rough for a few minutes, the van evened out and started running smoothly again. This means I don't have to start taking the bus to school, which is, needless to say, a nice silver lining!

I suggest checking the dumpsters around the area. When they see your pandora is not a DS or other easily pawned unit, they will more than likely chuck it into the trash. Thieves are ignorant.

Just for background, we had a theft in a car where I work and I walked a 4 block radius checking every dumpster. I found the woman's purse, wallet and some other stuff that they had taken and decided they did not want.

It might be worth a walk.
