OK, lets face it. GamePark is dying. In a few years, when the GP32 is completely obsolete, what will replace it?

There's no way GamePark can launch a new handheld in its current state. Maybe if it reformed, or went into an easier market, but the GP64 isnt going to get here anytime soon.

So, what handheld gaming platform do you think could replace the GP32?

Which one will bring in a community like this one?

The contenders:

READ THIS: The gaming systems I am listing are not necessarily the ones that could replace the GP32. I may be referring to the next generation of the device.

Zodiac - I don't think so. This isn't a gaming system, this is a pocket PC with gaming capabilities. And it costs way too friggin much.

Gizmondo(formerly Gametrac) - F*CKING NO WAY IN HELL. Obviously, you can tell I don't like this thing. This machine is the next step towards corporate enslavement. I mean, its targetted at a younger audience, has GPS built into it and it automatically downloads ads! And you know someone is gonna hack the ad system and put porn in there eventually.

GB A SP DS XXX - Stop adding characters to the end of GameBoy, Nintendo. Anyway, I think the GB series will get a bit friendlier to homebrew later on, and I think its the best candidate for a GP32 replacement.

PSP - Not enough info on this to make a judgement.

N-GAGE - Why did I even put this on here?

Something else?

how is gamepark dying? It's not like they even marketed or sold it anywhere but in Korea (yet). As someone once said before, it's like making pies to sell to one guy and having the whole neighborhood come in to buy a slice. And as for the european launch, they aren't even really dropping the price of the thing, OR producing an overly high quantity of ones to sell (thus losing money). So why does everybody think they are failing? I think that they are slowly growing, they weren't much in the FIRST place.

Gp32 was never really a well known product, nintendo always dominated the US market, dont no anywhere else but yea. how can it be dying when new things going on with it, but since when you said in a few years it will become obsolete................. what doesnt become obsolete?

can you explain what you meant when u said get into an easier market.

I think a better question is what will replace Nintendo <_<

My wording is completely screwed up and my ideas r mixed everywhere, sry for that :)

Listen, it takes a lot of money to develop a handheld, and even more to manufacture it. I don't think GamePark has that much money. They may be making money, but not enough to make a new system. So, logically, GamePark is out of the gaming business once the GP32 becomes obsolete.

FYI: DS isnt an incarnation of GB.

I think sony will dominate this market, atleast on the commercial scale. Sony has the money, the power, the big names behind them, they already own like %75 of the console market share, I dont see them doing any less on the handheld front.

Nintendo always got by, by doing just barely what is nessisary to survive. Never taking big leaps in the technology department. This is how sony passed them by in the console race. Now nintendo is trying to make up for all that by making "something different" (DS), which will probably fall as fast as N-Gage.

Gizmondo, well, enough said.

Zodiac might be a contender in the next incarnation, if they fix their issues and last long enough against the onslaught the PSP will bring to the market. Atleast for us homebrew buffs. Even if by some miricle the PSP gets a good homebrew scene, I would rather spend my money on a handheld whos company SUPPORTS homebrew, rather than one that forces hacks and hardware mods.

My opinion PSP will thrash nintendos ass across the handheld market like they did with the playstation.

Thats its problem, you know how much extra you are paying for that GPS and Camera? Who needs that in a game system? Since when have you been in the middle of mario and said "You know, it would be nice to know my exact location in the world, RIGHT NOW". ? Sure they are nice little extras (most with little or no use to gamers), but those two things alone are going to double the Gizmondo's asking price. Not to mention the GBA (physically) size screen! Come on! And their recent name change just lost them a huge number of potential customers, which is NOT a good way to start bussiness.

The Gametrac looks very good indeed and is my GP32 NOT replacement but it will sit happyly next to my GP32.

The camera is built in and the RRp is said to be between £80-£100 due to this weird advertising thing you get when you turn the unit on.

Also i think the GP32 will get stronger with the Euro launch bringing new people to the console.

http://www.gametrac.com/

Go there, they renamed gametrac to gizmondo.

[sarcasm]And yeah thats just what we want, banner ads on our game system.[/sarcasm]

If you buy this system, you are supporting those ad's, where will it stop? If you support this, they will just go further, and further.

Just wanted to say at $300-$400 who are Sony trying to kid, they are going after the I Book market NOT Nintendos market.

No way is that thing worth $400

And with the Gameboy Evolution set to be released late 2005 i think they have nothing to worry about.

Sony needs third party developers, they will all be clambering all over Nintendos DS and GB Evolution that will sell by the bucket load. Sony has no track record and by the sounds of it very few (weary) third party developers.

What exclusive stuff do Sony have?

They do not have a Mario or a Sonic or a Zelda even a Kirby. I can see the PSP being the biggest flop since the Amiga CD 32.

$300 is a good price for a portable more powerful than the ps2. Sony has heaps of 3rd party developers. Look at a few game sites its the biggest 3rd party signing for a portable. Capcom, SquareEnix, Sega, Kemco etc

Your entire argument is without substance, look at the home consoles, sony had NO backers there, and went straight to the top, way past all the competiton and stayed there.

Sony has no track record? WTF are you talking about? What do you call PS1 and PS2? And all of the MILLIONS of high end sony products world wide? Thats one impressive track record if you ask me. Not to mention their current dominance in the console market. Thats enough to win over even the most paranoid developers.

But now is not the time to worry about developers, hell they dont have an official DESIGN for the system yet!

As for DS, sell bucket loads? Thats VERY highly doubtfull. It will be a niche market, only certain style of games and certian types of players.

Nintendo might be creating their own downfall. As you said, most of nintendos userbase cant afford $300, so this means most wont be buying BOTH the DS and the new GB. This will effectivly split nintendos handheld userbase in half. Ever hear of the term "divide and conquer"? except in this case, nintendo is dividing themselves. Normally nintendo could pull this off, but with PSP and all the new handhelds out or coming out, nintendo is just making it easier for the others to dominate.

Well GC was never a big seller anyway. Sony dominates the console market now, leaving Xbox and GC to fight over the table scraps. The fight goes both ways, in some places GC was purchased more than Xbox, and vise versa. But never enough to even be more than a flea bite, a minor annoyance to sony.

However, nintendo has always had their GB/GBC/GBA to offset the sales, no matter how badly they did in the console wars, they were the uncontested ruler of the handheld market. Now, this wont be the case anymore, not only are there many new contestants entering the fields (albiet many have come and gone in nintendos lifespan), but their nemisis, sony, is also heading for that market, and we know what happened last time sony entered a market that nintendo controled, total domination.

I dont expect any less from their current venture

Sony is much larger than nintendo, they have the money, and the hook ups, to crush nintendo under their boot. And will do so as they have done before.

It annoys me when people throw PSP prices around like there has been some sort of official statement.

So far, there has been no official word on the final price point, though I really doubt it would ever be above $250 based on a number of reliable sources. The PSP *will* have a load of games. I am working for a company who is going to be producing PSP games (at least one of their sister companies), and I can tell you that there is a huge buzz in the industry about it. I may even be shifted to a team working on PSP games. *crosses fingers*

Lol, you crack me up :D
Well its true. Although a GPS is a cool gadget, it has no place on a game system. Thats extra fluff that is going to raise the price (or in this case, double the ad's lol). Remove the Camera and the GPS from the system and you can sell it for $150 without a need to offset the price with ad's. You might even be able to throw a bit of money at making the damn screen bigger.

I can just see the headlines now "Kid lost in jungle, found thanks to his Gizmondo."
