I'm not a gamer, or a physicist or an electrical engineer, but if you want my guess... The hardware got hot while playing and needs a while with fans on to get cool again.What stops so many, if not most, games from "turning down the RPM" when entering the pause menu?
My PC is not cooled particularly well, probably dusty as heck again in addition to that, but I hear when it's shedding heat.
So many games when paused do not change anything when it comes to fan RPM.
Why is that? Game time is stopped in most cases, there's nothing to render but a menu screen. I don't understand.
Currently pausing the newer Wolfenstein, having it in the background, and PC is still venting like it's BBQ time. Lower level, but still not desktop-only level.
In some games the game doesn't actually stop rendering, it just shows an overlay over the game. Other games the FPS might go to max due to less rendering causing the CPU/GPU to get stressed that way.What stops so many, if not most, games from "turning down the RPM" when entering the pause menu?

Playing Cyberpunk on Artix through Proton in full screen mode, I noticed that when Alt+Tab-ing out of it the fan speeds go up a notch. In my case maybe it's what @TeDaDeS described. Maybe without having to actually render anything, the frame time goes way down, the fps up, so the CPU preps more frames. ?I'm not a gamer, or a physicist or an electrical engineer, but if you want my guess... The processing is not high, but the temperature still if, so the fans keep on
I have a program that does that. My then brand new GTX1080ti GPU would squeal when viewing the main menu screen. I did some searching and found out the phenomenon is called 'coil wine', and the 1080 was susceptible to it. I ran a FPS overlay on that screen and saw it was running at well over a thousand frames per second! Yes, apparently the opposition to Orban got 141 seats finally, after counting mail ballots and all. (2/3 + 8 seats).~99% done and 138 instead of 132, guess he officially lost.
