Stop The Press, Who's She?

As someone mentioned in another topic, why is everyone so happy about this vid?
It can't definetly not be the emulator running games at 500MHz with >100Frames when GP2x runs them with 60 fps with 200MHz. And 60Fps is enuff. no need for 100fps.

So, tell me peeps, what is it you like about this video?

I like it becaus it shows some action on the Pandora, but thats all. nothing which gets me excited, sorry.

However, Go DEV TEAM!!! :) This vid shows indeed that you are on the way and doing good progress.
It might be (if possible) a good idea to release videos on a weekly (or even shorter) basis.

Hmm... on the other hand, don't be so quick, I recently started a project for the Gp2x... :)

"The emulator is not optimised for the Pandora and does not use any hardware acceleration yet, even the 2x resolution is done in software."

Plus the drool-worthy screen.

Yeah, double the framerate for double the speed is pretty impressive when you consider it's not optimized and even has resizing to handle on the CPU. Plus that screen IS pretty sexy.

I am very happy for a while now. The screen looks great! Very clear. I first thought that the 4.3" screen would be too small, but I now see it is big enough (for me). I haven't been that excited since I bought the Commodore Amiga in 1990

Great job!

You can use http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbPQJUOsQBQ&fmt=18 for a higher quality video

I wouldn't say is pretty impresive but hey, that's my humble opinion :D

Exactly. :) Somewhere in the Forums I had read, that some of the OMAP Hardware is Closed Source so there is no access to it. Maybe that's the reason why they couldn't use Hardware Features but even without this, 100FPS are not that bad for 60FPS games :D
Of course less MHz than 500 would be great but I think you need Access to the Hardware to do this (if I understand this right) I hope the devs will get what they need to use the OMAP in an efficient way. :)

They can use hardware features perfectly fine. The reason this port isn't optimized and doesn't use hardware features is because it is a dirty port.

These video demos are only running the game intros. There's no guarantee these frame rates will stay consistent in game play or the game itself won't crash on start up. What I'd like to see is the actual game being played with sound on.

I thought the only difference between an arcade demo and the actual game was that the levels were predetermined and it has an AI character playing instead of a human player. (So it should use more power because of the processing needed for the AI)

Thanks! This makes it look even better. I love that screen.
OT... can all youtube vids be shown at a higher quality (given that the original source was at a high quality)?

Thank you team for this demo, just seeing some games running on it makes me happy.
I have a gp2x, but I'm still impress with what this demo has shown.
Keep up the good work guys. There are more people who appreciate your work than not.

I don't know how the game demos work but I pretty certain that any kind of user interaction such as a key press is gonna steal cpu speed and the frame rate will take a hit for it especially with shooters when there's a whole lot going on screen. The video demos are a nice start but a video of a playable game in action would be more convincing of Pandora's ability.

Yeah, I would imagine that heavy action would cause frame rate drops, but there's nothing to worry about. He said it's running at 100-150fps, all without any hardware acceleration, so any drops you do see won't cause a difference in gameplay because it would have to drop an insane amount(50+ fps) to make a difference, and the drops you'd see from most games would be generally no more than 10. And that's just at really action-heavy spots, the game would play fine otherwise.

How would a listener for button presses take up more speed than an artificial intelligence would?

Because a human interaction requires a hardware interrupt service. And its not an artificial intelligence going on in the demo but pre-scripted actions. So basically at 2 seconds in a script tells the character to shoot and jump, then run to the right and so and so forth. Pretty much they captured the inputs actions of someone playing the game and play back the actions in the demo.

Even with this I doubt the frame rate would drop significantly.

Laffs at the people who think that emulating input and handling it is going to take more CPU than letting the attract modes run (when the attract modes play everything the same as normal mode anyway)

It's highly amusing when people blindly guess about performance aspects of emulation.

And I'm unfortunately going to have to echo that I don't think that emulating CPS1/2 level hardware at these frame rates is anything impressive, even without any specific hardware optimization and 2x scaling in software. I'd be more highly shocked if this wasn't achieved.

Depends on the quality uploaded, but yes you can attempt to watch all youtube videos in higher quality by adding &fmt=18 to the end of the url.

Exactly what I thought. Anyhow it's a nice demo...

I just want to know that this thing will handle 720x480p video and hq sound of any codec, without a hiccup. That's more exicting to me than an old arcade being emulated. Heck, the PSP can do that, is a closed system and packs only 32mb of ram. I need a little more than this, guys. Show me fast web page loads that may keep my interest. Right now, the pandora reminds me of that openphone that comes with nothing but a need for devs.

The hardware is absolutely capable of it, but the issue is getting the appropriate codecs with acceptable licences. I'm hopeful that it will be srted out eventually, but I wouldn't hold my breath on having them before (or even at) launch. TI already has an optimized h.264 codec for the 3530 chip, but it's not necessarily compatible license-wise with mplayer and/or linux. It may even require a fee per user, but I'm not 100% sure on the details.
