Squidge Is Going To Work On Pce For The Gp32 Again

There are a couple, such the GBA PCE Emu, and the Archimedes PCE emu, but I think I'll be writing my own as it'll be easier to debug. The current version is written in C, as it makes things even easier, and means I can work on the code with the PC.

The CPU it uses is a HuC6280, which is a custom version of the 6502, with a 21-bit address bus (16-3+8).

Whats wrong with the current PCE emulator on the GP32 aside from saves?

Couldnt you work on something new like a BBC micro emulator?

Wouldn't the BBC use ARM too as its an Acorny type machine.

@DaveC - Your the most disapointing thing about this board

@Reesy - Watch out cos that dude is from Scum'thorpe. He might bre you into submission

I am no coder but would it be possible then in the future to plug in an ASM core to replace the "c" ones? Could be wrong but The GP32 could likely run PC-engine with full sound, full speed at FS0 with some ASM cores.

GP-Engine is real close now as it runs at FS1 full speed at 133. With ASM it would probably do FS0.

have you tried increasing the clock speed within GP-Engine?

The BBC is 6502 based. There are a few emus in development around, but none are complete and (as far as I know) there are no betas available. One of them at least runs Repton 2 to some degree so its definitely possible...

I've hassled Squidge in the past to try a BBC emu, but he's never bitten unfortunately... :D

Did you have a look at Beebem[1]? There is also a port of Beebem for my Linux PDA Agenda VR3[2]. It works a little bit slow (VR3: MIPS CPU 66MHz, 8MB RAM), but the GP32 is a lot of faster.

Yes, the idea is to convert each module into asm once it's satisfactory.

look: The BBC doesn't interest me much, sure it would be nice to see a beeb running on the gp32, but it would quickly wear off, and you'd be left with yet another half-working emulator with no much change of it being finished off.

I'm interested in the PCE, and it's library of games, so it stands a much greater chance of being finished. I've even got the motivation of starting one from scratch rather than porting one.

LOL this thread has turned into an intervention of sorts for DaveC more than a thread about the new PCE emu  :D

See Dave we're all in agreement here... it's like I said... dont' be so negative dude you never know WHAT is going to happen, and whatever does happen, a negative attitude about something will usually ensure that whatever you DONT want to happen will be the thing that DOES happen.

Well as long as people keep flaming it will be a hijacked thread. I was prepared to just let it go with my first post on this page. I have said what I have and everyone now knows how much I love the zodiac. I was done with the subject. And to clarify as some people like to flame me for things that I didn't even say:

I am bummed that the scene may lose another coder *BUT* Reesy is not my enemy because he may go to the z. I appreciate everything that he has done for the GP32 scene, which was quite alot. If going to the Z makes him happy then he should do it, have fun :)

I don't think devs owe us/me anything.

@ Look I am the *most* dissapointing thing about the board? That is pretty bad, glad to know I am loved by so many ;)

That is it from me about this, full stop.

Back on topic:

@ Look, what is wrong with GP-engine other than saves?

Some games don't work. Bonk 2 has no sprite, R-type is missing some backgrounds, Blazing lazers turns to mush after the first boss, Super Grafix games don't work (they do on GBA so I am sure the GP32 could handle it), speed is slow at 133 at FS0.

None of these are huge problems but there is still alot of room for improvement. If Squidge can pull off an emu that fixes these things plus saves, it would be very worthwhile. It would certainly go down in GP32 history as one of the best emus. GP-engine is still talked about and has alot of interest so anything better would be great. The PC-Engine had graphics that are on par with MD in some ways and look better than NES, etc.

yeah :) keep up the great work Squidge :) We are all sure that you'll success in it :) and we're all dreaming of a perfect PCE emu .... rhaaaaa can't wait to know if it's finaly possible to get SCD, SGX & Arcade Card emulation on GP32 ;p
in any cases MANY thanks to you Squidge :) I wish you all the best for this emu & don't forget to set up a Paypal account when you'll success ;p

If he gets stuck with SGX and SCD he could always nick some code from FluBBas emu, the source is available :)

how about super cdrom iso support?????

dracula x and gradius 2 gofer with a drop in mp3 quality would be fantastic

Not enough CPU to do MP3 + emulation, at least not at a playable speed. Super CD would have only the game SFX and not the background music. Still that would be great, better than not having the game at all.

to be honest davec i'd be happy to see anything remotely new emulated as dark days seem to be on their way sooner rather than later

Jackie Chan is an awesome game... normally I'd never have even given this one a try and not sure how I stumbled onto it but I'm glad I did. I played the hell out of the NES version on Little John.. yeah too bad the PCE one didn't work but NES is the same with less colors that's it.

Squidge - I am still a HUGE fan of the PCE as well, I actually owned a couple Japanese ones back in the day (I live in the US), though I don't have one now :( I want one but feel $100 is too much to pay on Ebay or whatever... though the US TG16 is MUCH cheaper it's so damn ugly I dont want it in my house! In the meantime having it emulated and not needing funky adapters to play the best US AND Japanese games has made me a very happy camper indeed... Well again I'm just very glad to hear that you are into this project not only from the coding standpoint but also just because you have a love for the system, which I think does give a great chance that you'll actually see this one through. PCE with saves would really finish off the list of reasons I actually bought a GP32... when I orignally went to purchase one was when DrMD was still very incomplete, so really PCE was the main reason back then, though I never knew it didn't have saves until I actually got around to playing it :(

So since then DrMD, LittleJohn, Doom and Scumm have made the purchase worthwhile for me though I still always held out hope that he original reason for buying one, perfect PCE emulation with the ability to save and resume games, would eventually come thru. Dark days coming or not, this seems like it's the BEST time to be a GP owner!

another great feature of jackie chan on the pc engine had to be it's fantastic soundtrack!!! cheesy and awesome all at the same time - amazing!!

Squidge - any chance of starting an 'official' thread in this or one of the other sections of the gp32x forums, to keep updated with progress and such? Also, are you going to continue using the name GP Engine or gonna call this one something else?
