Squidge Is Going To Work On Pce For The Gp32 Again

Yes, it will always be the slowest, but that's at comparable clock speeds. It should be quite easy to beat the GBA simply because our processor can, most of the time, be 10 times quicker than the GBA's 16mhz processor.

What I'm saying is that even though our processor can be 10 times quicker, doesn't mean it will be 10 times faster than the GBA, simply due to the graphics support in the GBA closely matching the PCE.

Whats important is that it should still easily be able to get full speed (60 fps) PCE emulation on the GP32, just as other devices with tiling support built into there hardware will be able to go much faster still, as long as they have a comparable CPU speed (such as the Zodiac).

Not as such in the same way like the snes, but you could build a big tile covering the entire screen area out of tiles for the background, and then use another to lay your sprites onto, (etc, etc, as many as ram supports) and then blend them together to produce the final image, all within the graphics processor, so rediculously quick. All the processor would have to do is just upload the tiles that change, and since there's 8mb of video ram, there's plenty of room for caching, so hopefully uploads are kept to a minimum.

Awesome stuff, Squidge, really looking forward to whatever you do. PC Engine is such a superb machine, probably the best console for pure "arcade" games. G'luck!

Wow thats sounds like fun, I didn't realise how cool the hardware was on the Zodiac. I'm think I'm going to take the plunge and get myself one as soon as I find a new job.

So this means you are abandoning the GP32 for the Zodiac then? :(

Well Squidge looks like you got what you wanted all along <_<

dont be stupid im sure the fella will do what he wants a gp project here a zod there,

i dont think he will abandon the gp' even if he did he gave us DrMD which is good enough for me so thanks for your work dude.

bah; someone says "they'll buy X".. why does that immediately mean "you must be abandoning Y!" around here? People can own two machines!

Hey squidge my man -- you write up your own CPU emu or just rip one for now?

Past experiences.

When Reesy started coding on the GP32 he stopped on GBA. So likely when he starts on Zodiac he won't have time for GP32 anymore. It is just the way it usually works out.

You are the exception rather than the rule in this case as you are one of the few (only?) coder that still does both. Thanks for that.

I haven't stopped working on the GBA completely, its just that Genesis emulation is currently my main focus. Its true that while I'm getting the Zodiac port off the ground I won't be working on DrMD for the GP32 but after that initial period the GP32 and Zodiac versions will be updated at the same time. The only differences I can see ( at the moment ) in the two projects will be the rendering routines, everything else will be the same. So any break throughs on one platform will be shared with the other.

Anyway enough of this off topic stuff, this thread is about Squidge's new PCE emulator...is it finished yet? :)

EDIT:
@Skeezix: Coding for the GBA is soo much fun, you don't know what your missing :)

And his GBA project was very andvanced. I'm still enjoying DrSMS on my GBA. And PCEAdvance is awesome!

BTW: am I the only seeing the irony in DaveC's posts? he complains about the ZOD taking away a few of the many GP32 devvers, but doesn't really care, if WE take away one coder of the few (relly good coders) from the GBA scene.

i think DaveC used to own a zodiac but sold it to get a GP32 as there wasnt any emus out for the zodiac. ( i may be wrong though)
theres a davec on zodiacgamer he owns: GP32 BLU, DS, PSP

apologies if it isnt the same one

Reesy .. oooh, maybe I shoudl get a flash cart for GBA and give it a shot :) Once oyu get your footings in place, devving the same project for both GP32 and Zodiac isn't too bad.. CaSTaway and Zot and XCade share about 99% of their source between versions, aside from the platform specific bootstraps etc. Zodiac is a pain to get used to for sure due to Palm OS 5's ARM/68k split, but you've got us around so shoudl be up pretty fast. I always go for cross platform.. to me its a great joy to wrap up one version, then just hit "make" and out pop versions for other platforms :)

Well, I think I he said that several times. But let's better stop talking about him now, i fear we already ruined the amiga thread. So let's keep this thread on topic.

@skeezix: I don't think you'll regret it. IMO the GBA is WWAAYY better for SMS emulation.

hm, wait! The GBA has nothing to do with the topic, so I will get this on topic again: I think squidge never coded an emu for the GBA, did he?

I did have a Zodiac and I did sell it. Not because there werent any emulators for it I just couldn't get used to that analog for playing them, among other things. whatever.

Why is GBA better for SMS emulation?
