Hello everyone,

We're aware we need a solid and up to date and well maintained app source for the Pandora.

Right now, as we know, only the wiki is well maintained in terms of a mostly solid software list.

I'm suggesting $50 a week for someone to maintain Pandora apps to be up to date with all software.

You could either update it when needed or do one big update once a week.

It would take maybe 2-3 hours a week and is ideal for a student to do.

I can work with you adding features. The current back end interface is super easy to use, no technical knowledge is required (apart from how to upload files).

Because the first update will take you longer I'm suggesting a one off payment of $150.

Is anyone interested? PM me. Previous experience of running/contributing to a website would be good.

Thanks,

Craig

It would be great if the appstore could read out PND data directly, like milkshakes archive, as that would make things way faster and easier. :)

that seems like a little bit a waste of money when the community have offered to help for free, plus that money should be getting used to pay to make pandoras quicker.

seems to me like something else that is likely to annoy some people.

Many members of this community have offered you to do this and you never allowed this. Now that your app-store show how its late you want to pay ?

I would have prefer that you accepted the offer you got in the first place and use these $$$ to faster the pandora production....

Ho well....

You know what would be fast and easy? Give milkshake the money and get him to just publish his app store. Once his is online, I highly doubt any others will be viable ..

I wouldnt take the money anyway, thats not why i am doing it, im doing it because i want to do something good for the community.

I think craig is a little miss guided thats all, though he means well.

As I've said before, we're doing this properly, it needs to be professional.

The fact is while several people have promised 'amazing appstores' ('just wait for X's website', 'you're wasting your time' - over and over I've heard this) none have appeared in over a year.

It needs to be done properly.

I promise you craig mine will appear, in the next couple of months.

Im not going to quit the project (unless for some reason I die).

And I do understand ur intentions but I think paying someone to update a site which really should be self maintainable is a bit of a waste of money.

The money woul de better served else where in my opinion, but thats up to u.

Craig has a point. While Milkshake's website may have more features, the appstore is both functional and official. For now we need to keep it updated, so that later more advanced features can be added. I mean, if Milkshake were to suddenly disappear (not that I think you would if you had the option, Milk) and Craig had shut down the appstore, then there would be serious problems.

With the official appstore you will have at least two people who are stakeholders ensuring it survives. Craig would not want it to go down or become outdated as it would effect the project and hence himself, and the new worker has the simple incentive of money.

Look at all of the open-source projects out there that could have been awesome if they only had a financial reason to be finished!

I don't think Craig has seen milkshakes site, or else the position would be much, much different ..

I understand your point, but open source isnt generally about being paid, why pay someone to to keep the app-store updated when the developers would keep it updated themselves if the site had any kind of proper "management" and "ownership" system in place.

Offer this $50 to developers instead to incentavise new and better apps? that would be the better option, plus in the end my website will be opensource which means if I ever did leave (which I wont) people can set up another site using my code.

basically craig is chucking money at a problem he could fix himself if he had time to improve the current website (i understand he is extremely busy at the moment) and as I said before people have already offered to do this for craid for FREE.

there isnt anything to see at the moment since of the updates to accomodate the new specs, but once Ihave all the new things in place, the rest is easy.

Could you post a link to your site please.

there isnt anything to see at the moment (there was and lots of people saw it including EvilDragon) but since there has been updates to pxml specs to better accomodate pnd repositories, the old site does not work becuase of changes to the database etc, but once Ihave all the new things in place the rest will be easy and i will publicly anounce the website..

Paying for something does not make it professional. Recall the $10'000 you threw at someone to get better wifi drivers that never materialized?

I currently work for one of the largest trading firms in North America and they leverage open source software all the time. There is absolutely nothing unprofessional about using open source software.

Hey, if someone can do the job, do the job. Take the 50 and wipe your ass, blow your nose, or make origami with it. Craig is just trying to give someone an incentive to do a job, and do it well, and do it more than 6 weeks. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm not sure 50 a week will acomplish this, but we will see. Let's not turn paying for someones time, into the "delete threads" discussion. It's not that serious people!

Chris

as far as im concerened with the exception of a few projects opensource beats closed source projects hands down and this is because the developer is usually enjoying his project and in turn the quality of his work is better.which is why google allows its employees a sertain percetage of free time to program whatever they want and get paid :) google understands people make things better when they want to do it.

Dear Craig, what everyone is trying to say I guess is that we feel honored you intend to do this, but it's a start at commercialisation of the Pandora Scene.

While this is required for the professional manufactoring of the device, the software and scene around it should remain somewhat free.

Atleast for me, I'm enjoying the device a lot because of its idea of using free software provided by a community that wants to do it just for the sake of doing it.

A long story short - there are plenty of souls in here that wish to aid, even if you didn't provide that cash.

Take them up on their offer.
