The below diagram is the problem. It can happen after wear, damage or defect. The small black plastic "button" shown in the picture called "center push switch" can become worn and/or displaced as it is only held in place by a small plastic tab.

My best advice to avoid this is to avoid pressing the stick down often and hard. Don't take the piss out of the stick. You don't need gorrilla force to make it work.

I've been concerned about that since reading about it. I've noticed my cap now rotates freely (its a modified version of the cap it came with, I melted it with a ball bearing to get an indention)when I'm playing. However, if I pull the cap off, the stick itself does not budge. This has been thinking it might be just the cap that needs replacement.

Anyway, let me know if you find a place where I can get a new cap. I'd be willing to spend up to $10 for a decent one.

I need to get a paypal account setup in the next couple of days. I have some donations/purchases that need to happen.

My cap is not modified and it rotates freely, but that only get's annoying sometimes. But other than the usual shit, my cap is as crap as it was when I bought it.

That was an amazingly useful and interesting post Dave, thanks.

Unfortunately I just couldn't stop smirking at words like "nub" and "flange". I'm dead mature, me.

btw, the cap you sent me arrived a couple of days ago. I really didn't like it since I'd got used to the old one. Then I used it for 5 minutes and decided that it is actually really amazing. I can now navigate down the list in DrMD without hitting a diagonal and causing it to jump a page! Hurrah!

Good work, you are indeed the king of the GP2X stick. You should get your own "Stick Guru" classification on these boards.

Indeed, i had to moan at my brother over this issue the other day. For some reason some people seem to think you need to press down on the stick while moving it.....

indeed my new stick arrived yesterday awsome work felt the difference straight away i can now play speedball properly now :D thanks dave and its good to know to these things about the stick thanks again

That is a different thing. This above situation has nothing to do with the cap, it is the shaft itself. Dorian Grey had this problem. It doesn't seem common, yet.

I've got the rotating freely joystick mod too, I thought it was just the cap rotating on the shaft but I suppose it could be the whole shaft rotating.

I hadn't noticed until I started playing Xenon2 so it has gone in just under a week of use. Not affecting the game as far as I know, I've always been bad at it.

Think I'll go back to using it as a movie player and ebook reader.

Edit: after digging my GP2X out and removing the cap it is just the cap rotating, not the shaft. Was the hole in the bottom of the cap originaly D shaped to fit the shaft? It is definatly round now, time for some superglue.
