Pokitto Handheld

It looks like it has been inspired by the Pokemon Mini :
From the design and button layout to the name.. Or maybe that's just me

Maybe ptitseb could port some Pokitto games to the Pandora/Pyra with the help of that simulator once they come out :p

Very true... maybe i'll keep the legs for now. just seems that the arms make it less pocketable...
While reading their forum someone pointed out that you don't need the arms and legs for that since the things that hold it together in the corners of the main body are also hollow, so you can use those for a lanyard or whatever. It turns out that the arms and legs are there because the people making it just wanted them. I guess they fit Lego stuff, which it was partially intended to be used with.

I wrote to Jonne (Pokitto author). And He will be happy to see Pokittos in your shop. Also Pokitto emulator for Pyra/Pandora will be very cool!
I only looked into the technical stuff a bit. It would be cool if we could get the two working together for some things more directly than with USB. I can't think of why or how yet, but who needs a reason and an easy way? That takes away from the fun. "Because I can!"

Any idea what the price will be? The KS price were higher than I expected. Also, it may be cheaper for people in the US to order domestically, plus they manufacture the ones for NA sale in the US. I might opt to do that and donate a few bucks to ED.

Price will be 30-55usd depends of how big series will be.On other hand it is price of used GBA without flash. So it is OK.

Yes, but gba is not a barebone microcontroller... The graphic engine is great...

I don't mean software, I am talking about the hardware...

But at the same time, you need to pay extra for either a flashcart, or plenty of money for actual nintendo carts if you want to do everything above board. The polkitto is designed to be hackable. I don't know how powerful that M0 chip is but the GBA had a full featured 32-bit A7 plus fancy asics doing sprite stuff and mode 7 stuff I assume, so even if the M0 is clocked significantly faster I don't expect the games to be of the same quality as GBA games, but wiring the thing up to a breadboard and getting to blink some lights or downloading a game then tweaking it and flashing it to your polkitto is a different kind of fun to that of playing any Nintendo game I can think of.

I'd say they're different enough that comparing them wasn't the most useful metric to begin with even. If it's under 50EUR I'd say it's just the sort of money I could spend on something this kind of fun without having to justify the purchase to myself too hard.

Coding on GBA was not so easy as you think:http://cs.umw.edu/~finlayson/class/spring16/cpsc305/notes/08-graphics.html
There was blitter/vdp like thing. But you had only 16,78mhz cpu.Sou you was using every cycle possible...

I think games on Pokitto will be more homebrew (more "8bit/16bit" like).Remember all big companies was behind GBA games. So Pokitto is more designed for indie/homebrew/makers scene. But I have seen Wolf3D demo playing some opl sounds (fm synth). So its not so bad.
Also there is gpio interface simply called "hat".So you can still interface blitter there too or dsp for 3D stuff...Do you remember SNES carts with DSP chips? Also wiring knob pot for pong like game is something what you cant do on any game console...

Is that a microSD slot on this? I think so...
Headphone jack - check.
How much are they going to cost?

Can this thing handle a high VBR MP3 playback? Audio quality?

I might be interested in one or more just as dedicated music playback widgets.

probably not. a cortex M0 at 48MHz probably would need an audio-specific chip. but you could probably come up with some chiptune music which sounds pretty good.

i've used my bitbox to "stream" 8-bit wav files from an SD card, but as you know wavs take up some space.

Should be easy to have a multiplayer system using the GPIO ports on the top :)
I was going to say the major drawback for me is the "program online using a webpage", which I just think is stupid (but that's my personal opinion). Though I did find him making a comment about EmBitz being an option for offline dev
[doublepost=1514980894,1514966461][/doublepost]Hmm, looks like the offline stuff is ready... and there's a simulator.

I might try and have a play with the sim, and if I make anything, might consider an actual device

There will be VLSI VS1053 midi/mp3/wav etc interface...Like cartridge.Pokitto without anything can stream wav music from SD card.Pokitto will cost 30-50euro...

That seems a good chip; can also handle ogg vorbis decode, and also flac if the CPU can help along.

How do you fit this to the polkitto though? I see no cart interface/slot, so would this require a case mod to fit?
