If your eyes are still looking to me, i never said that. I would like to complete the sentence with "you should learn that."And stop the silly "If you can't be bothered to read and understand the PND spec, you shouldn't tinker".
And that's what Johnny wants to do, that's why he is asking questions how to do it to Craig.
If 3000 users will ask you about teaching system basics, that's not easy and i know that's a good reason for craig to make things easier. But that a user doesn't know system basics is neither the users nor craigs fault. That is normal and not a problem that needs fixing because it's not broken. We all started with that. Some of our knowledge of other systems can be used for new systems, some can not. Let me quote a friend: "i bought a mac because i would like to have less problems, but i got other problems only". If you try to make a system easier for use because of this, you have to develop a system which will be usable without any knowledge at all - which is impossible.
Do you really think there are Johnnys out there who couldn't _understand_ this? They have trouble because they don't know it - not because they don't understand it.The point is that someone who doesn't do this every day also need to be able to understand how to do this.
That would be a nice idea and the easiest way to handle for a lot of Johnnys. There is a first draft of it how it could look like.Whilst we're at it, why not a windows-style installation application? Something that opens a nice window which allows you to select a pnd, select an SD card
Then we are in need of something easier than folders, don't we? Let's re-invent this folder thing, it's far to complicated, an amazing amount of people could not handle it.</sarcasm>It may well be easy to create a bunch of folders, but you'd be amazed at the amount of students I get - and I teach Comp Sci - who simply has no idea of stuff like folder structure.
And the lack of this knowledge will make anyone blind for the upcoming troubles the "easy" solution will generate. In short: Those of you who believe that this is an easy problem to solve are very, very blind to the amount of info you have already internalized.
By re-inventing the pnd system you will encounter the same troubles like before and will find out that zip is not good for big files on the pandora. Craig is calling the PND system "a bit over engineered" and may be he thought the same about the repo specs, but it is just evolved beyond the problems that the conecpt carries within. By refusing to use the repo specs and doing his own thing and his wish to use zip instead of pnd he proved that he don't want to learn. Johnny wants to learn - Advantage Johnny.
