Everybody moarns, but nobody wants to do something about it, so i created a list APPS from repository [repo.openpandora.org] that writes stuff to NAND, and thats need to be re-compiled:

OK, lets go [sorted by porter]:

Sebt3 ports:

gFTP [configuration files saves to NAND]: http://repo.openpand...l&app=gftp-gftp

LifeRea [all data files(jpg/html/videos/database) saves to NAND]: http://repo.openpand...a-liferea-12503

Pan Newsreader [all data files / cache saves to NAND]: http://repo.openpand...=detail&app=pan

Gnumeric [saves configuration to NAND] http://repo.openpand...-gnumeric-29130

VLC [writes to NAND to Applications/Data/vlc] - it comes from sebt3 beta page so it is ok to remove it..

EKIGA [writes config files stuff to NAND] - it comes from sebt3 beta page so it is ok to remove it..

BANSHEE [writes config files stuff to NAND] - it comes from sebt3 beta page so it is ok to remove it..

Bluefish editor [All pre-12 nov 2011 releases writes to nand to .bluefish]

HomeBank [all pre-17 nov 2011 releases writes to NAND to /home/[user]]

Hermocom ports:

Truecrypt [saves config to nand] http://repo.openpand...l&app=TrueCrypt

J.Gwinn ports:

PanPlayer [config files]: http://apps.openpand...n/PanPlayer.inf [not in repo but still on official page..]

Kaworu ports:

FreePascal Installer [copies some files into nand]: http://repo.openpand...app=install_fpc

Slaeshjag ports:

Midori 0.4.1 (pre-16 Oct 2011 RELEASES ) [cache/data files]

pnd version is probably free from nand writing (not tested by me)

Oh, StreaK's revenge ;)

But I think that can be really useful!

Good you started it!

Good you started it!

I offered milkshake to add an info to the repo about apps clean from writting to nand, this [im sure] will help a lot with that task [if original app maintainer have no time to do it].

Since I do not use these apps I have them not tested but the Idea is good. :) I should search my NAND for Apps that store stuff there, I'm sure I don't have much. Are there Some common spots on NAND where I could start the search?

Search in your homedirectory for hidden directories, that have a leading . And the applicationname.

Also there are folders like gnome2 orApplications, where programs can store files.

I think it would be a good idea to pin this thread, at least until there is something like a flag implemented in http://repo.openpandora.org/ . (Indeed, there is already a huge number of pinned threads, but that's certainly not the fault of this here thread, or is it?)

Also, it would be a good thing if the first post contained some information about potential data storage places so that more people can more easily help with the list.

Just to recap for those who don't know: the Pandora's NAND is probably not likely to wear out very quickly, but for some other reasons PNDs should not typically write there anyway.

Java writes to NAND once on install, but that's basically a necessity. Which reminds me I need to fix it for hotfix 6

Good topic is good. PNDs should be all about isolation and keeping the NAND tidy.

+ added:

Pan Newsreader

PanPlayer [not in repo but in apps.pandora.org]

Java [thx Wizard Stan for info]

FreePascal installer

Midori

Audacious

Geeque

as a bonus:

Thunar

Keep em coming :)

I can help testing on monday.

Edit: I think there are some of my earlier pnds, that could write configfiles tonand, but not sure...

Midori writes to the NAND??? WTF?!?

I use this browser every day, It can't write to the NAND, I didn't gave permission. ^^" Midori has it's own appdata folder, same for PanPlayer. I was reall sure that if an appdata folder on SD exists, the app doesn't has to write on the nand.

Please fix this if needed, especialy for Midori. Now I'm scared.

Edit: no Midori or PanPlayer dir found on NAND, at least not in home and subfolders within home. Same for audacious...I continue searching.

Only things on my Pandora that are surely written to NAND are alot of stuff in the TMP folder, I wanted to ask anyway if I can delete all the crap within the temp folder? Any risk?

After poking around a bit, I say don't worry about /tmp.

As it turns out, /tmp is a tmpfs filesystem (completely stored in memory, not on the internal NAND) as it eventually symlinks to /var/volatile.

So nothing in /tmp ever touches the NAND, no worries Fusion_Power.

Ok, but the /tmp on my Pandora seems to be always there, with the same folders and stuff. So I guess it is saved on the NAND. The PND_OUT Files can be deleted I'm sure but in my tmp there are also Folders like "Icon Cache" and some other crap. But it is not much. I'm more worried if an app always writes stuff to the NAND so I hope you are right that it doesn't really touch the NAND.

There are so many files and folders on the NAND, it would be reallyy interesting to know which ones are constantly (re)written by an app. Some of the pre installed Apps have to store their stuff somewhere.

/tmp should disappear (and subsequently be recreated) when you restart. It would be extremely odd and more than a little disturbing if your /tmp directory was persistent.

I thought temp was written to NAND then deleted on shutdown?
