Hi all,

I've added plume-creator to repo, an application for writing novels similar to scrivener:

http://repo.openpandora.org/?page=detail&app=plume-creator.marovada

It's a straight recompile of an open source app by Cyril Jacquet, packaged into a pnd.  It works well and even adjusts to the small screen of the Pandora.

I packaged it because I have found a rather interesting use for my Pandora.  I'm an aspiring writer (I have published a novella, "Body Robber" in the Kindle Store).  My only problems are very long work hours and sole parent for my two daughters, so not much time to write.

So I decided to combine my exercise on the treadmill every night with my writing hobby.  I go on the treadmill, Pandora in hand, and type out my latest work, which is a Zombie novel with a twist, all while exercising.  I have to admit, I have slipped a couple of times (or maybe more) but it's better than trying to type on a pc while on the treadmill.  Trust me on that one!

Anyway, I hope you get some use out of the application.

Just don't overwork yourself /too/ much, would you? ;-)
Thanks for the app.

Great idea to combine things and make best use of your time.

I hadn't seen this app before but I have tried one called "Focus Writer" and I was thinking of seeing if it would work on the Pandora, I will take a peek at this one when I get my pandora :)

Interesting!

I'm also currently writing a novel on my Pandora. A feminist science-fiction porn novel, in Dutch. I'm using LibreOffice, but perhaps Plume Creator would be better for this. Can it import .odt? And can it do Dutch spell checking?

:-D
I guess it can do spell checking for any language you give it a suitable file for, but doubt it can do .odt importing.

I would write the novel in some more basic format and then do the formatting with LaTeX later, but maybe that's just my approach.

I would use LaTeX too, except it's not so practical for ëéèêē, and the `` '' quoting style is a bit annoying. And since I don't need any math in my novel, the structure is limited to just plain chapters (no ((sub)sub)sections with cross-referencing definitions and theorems etc), and I don't need any citations, most of the reasons why I like LaTeX are not applicable.

Thanks for all of your responses. I was using LibreOffice, but I got tired of constantly scrolling through a large document on a small screen.  That's why I wanted to try something organised into chapters.

@T4b:  I'll try not to work too hard.  Job doesn't give me much choice unfortunately and one of my daughters has health problems so there are hospital visits in between.

@ekianjo: Thanks for your feedback.  Putting the dictionaries into the PND won't be difficult.  I'm not sure what troubles you've had with the mise en scene edition window because it seems to work docked.  Is yours undocked?

@_wb_: It doesn't import files as yet.  You have to copy and paste.  The website promises it's being updated though, so maybe in a future release.  I'll check out the languages of the dictionaries.

I got tired of that too. There is a navigation toolbox you can activate in LibreOffice, but it's not that great. I more or less solved my problem by adding a table of contents: using Ctrl+click on ToC items, you can easily jump to them, and to get to the ToC is just Ctrl-End (I put it at the very end of the document).

You need to put dictionary files into a directory .plume-creator/dicts/ in your plume-creator appdata folder.  You can download the dictionary files from the source on sourceforge.  I tried to upload a compressed version of the folder but the editor said I'm not allowed to upload it.

You can also add custom dictionaries (openoffice format) by placing them in your .plume project folder (eg my_story.plume) and then importing them into your project using the dictionary import dialogue (in the project/configure menu item).

Can someone post a link to the English [uS] dictionary files? Thanks!
