Massive bloc of magnesium presents no risk... You'd be hard pressed to heat it hard enough for it to ignite... The rest of the pyra would be completely charred before the magnesium would burn...
Magnesium + water + high temperatures = you're gonna have a bad time. Anyone who's taken a basic chemistry class knows that.

And while, obviously, you've got bigger things to worry about if your Pyra gets wet, you definitely don't want some magnesium parts of it happening to go up in flames if that water happens to contact hot parts, or the water ITSELF happens to be hot. Being in the presence of steam is as good as "Please give me fire" when you've got magnesium around.
 
You are mixing with sodium, don't you? It definitely would not be used, for example, in cars if humidity was an issue, there's natural passivation occurring due to oxydation layer... Magnesium in powder is another story through...
 
I used to ignite pencil sharpeners in my younger years, fun! :D
How, what we're they? The little ones I had were plastic with a steel blade in them. (As if a sharpened pencil want enough of a weapon, we also had the pencil sharpener with something that was basically a thick razor blade in it. That, and the countless paper cuts I got tell me that the rules against having knives were kinda pointless.) I don't know what the wall mounted ones were, but I thought they were all steel.

I think I would like to try cutting a hole in the case and mounting a copper piece to help get some of the heat out if I can find a good enough spot. I think someone proposed doing that with the location being near the hinge above the keyboard, where fingers aren't likely to go, and it can still get air when placed on a table. That idea stuck with me. It seems the mockup that was shown with it covering the ports might lead to discomfort while holding, or maybe burns, if it works, and I plan on using some of those ports. Is anyone else considering trying to hack in one of those tiny fans if there is room? Maybe we can try combining these ideas.

I need to try to remember the Pyra is a small computer, not a car. Well, it does have flames on it. :p
 
Also, if fire is an issue for you, I'd way more concerned about the battery... To ignite a magnesium radiator, you would probably need to take a torch to it...

Oh, I think I have seen some like that. Most of us just had the plastic ones, some with the compartment to hold the shavings. When I had the ones with that compartment they always opened or broke, sometimes getting shavings everywhere.

Anyway, modern day me would prefer one of those pencil sharpeners over the plastic ones. Unfortunately I now almost exclusively use 0.5mm mechanical pencils when not using a pen.
 
Hopefully all the posts about liquid cooling solutions for a DS sized handheld are meant in jest.

If this thing ends up getting a fan or liquid cooling, it's an insta refund for me. If even Microsoft can't figure out the fan in the surface without massive throttling/noise issues, then it's not getting figured out here, and it'll be one of the first things to fail. And then I have to start worrying about dust for a friggin handheld.

Let's just underclock the thing a bit if it's not possible to get it within whatever the tolerances are.
 
The idea of a magnesium heat sink made me smile. :) This would provide us with the spectacle of a Pyra in flames! Nicely thematic, but Pyras are rather pricey for a one-time entertainment use, however spectacular the effect. :p
Magnesium is very light and strong, used in a lot of places such as Thinkpad laptop frame, and Helicopters to give two examples.

Can't see any scenario where hardware changes would be made if all that was required to make 4GB work is a small overvolt. It of course makes sense to look for a solution where overvolting is not necessary, which is my understanding of the current situation re the 4GB issue.

Apologies if that was dangerously close to being on topic, can we now please get back to talking about pencil sharpeners ;)

You do realize that those of us talking about things like that are talking about doing that on our own to our Pyras, not as a stock option, right? If you don't like people modding their stuff you might as well ask for that refund.

Excuse me, as thermal conductive material and heat sinks are still discussed, I want to bring in some material which has quite some interesting properties and was not mentioned (?) up to now:
alumina (aluminium oxid) which is electrically insulating (as being a ceramic) but thermal conductive , quite well even with 30 W/m*K (a tenth of pure alu but orders higher than other electrical insulators). It is also chemical stable.

But how expensive would that be? If 10x the insulation performance comes with 10x the cost, then it's not exactly worth it.
