I've been seeing reviews pop up for Oculus Quest, and it sounds pretty good. Anyone tried it yet?
[doublepost=1558710227,1558706715][/doublepost]Oof, the website says you need an iOS or Android device to set this up. Not a barrier for most people I know, but it may irk members of this forum.

I love VR and the average folk's probably gonna like this and drive some VR adoption. But this doesn't change the fact that you'll always want to throw as much performance as possible at VR to get the best experience out of it.
Can't see myself ever getting a mobile VR device, unless it flawlessly connected to PC too. The convenience of it is there, but it's not really a factor for me.
What I've seen from reviews, though, it appears to do the stuff it aims to do fairly well. Even better than the Rift S in some regards (like having physical IPD adjustment).

Also as with all Oculus products: Facebook and their walled VR software garden. I'll pass.

I have a Valve Index pre-order, but that's a whole different target audience, especially in pricing, that's for sure.

The Quest doesn't work with a PC at all by design, it runs Android and therefore has access to the full suite of existing Android based VR titles.
That being said, VRidge literally just posted an update that they work with it to bring full support for PC games.

Not sure what you mean: it works 100% with Steam, both the Rift S by design and the Quest via VRidge. You don't need to touch the Oculus store at all if you don't want to.

This all being said, I don't own either of them, I've just spent the last several days doing a lot of research on account of a hefty tax refund headed my way.

Walled gardens aren't a big problem for me when gaming. All cartridge based systems were essentially walled gardens. I have problems giving facebook money, potentially making them more successful, although at least it's a more honest form of income for them that trying to sell my private data.

But yeah, something that wirelessly streamed 3d video from a static box (e.g. a PC, or a dedicated console) would be the best of both worlds, although I don't know whether the current wireless video specs can deliver stereoscopic video at the required frame rates. Given I doubt we're there just yet, this might be the best thing you can do; the lack of any tethering is a great step forward, and the Quest apparently isn't as limited as the Go or something like Google Cardboard in terms of graphical performance.

VRidge is using a compressed video stream over USB or Wifi, with additional latency and also lower frame rate it seems. Consumer wireless options of PC headsets use 60 GHZ wifi with PCIe cards and funky antennas for a reason.
There's no DisplayPort out on that USB connector on the Quest.

Oculus Store has paid exclusives, as well as the added incentive of only having to buy a game once if it has a Quest and PC version. Looks bad once you decide to switch your VR headset manufacturer in the future, though.
I'm not gonna ignore Revive's existence here, but that's not a real fix for their policies, let's be honest. The Quest can be seen as a console if you wish, but I can't condone console-like practices on the PC end, personally.

Er, it's not on PC and why would you want to tether yourself using a displayport cable?
The PC-end is in regards of Oculus software for PC. It's the companies' practices in the PCVR space that bug me among other things. This extends to purchasing Quest titles meaning you also own the PC version, but one that works with Oculus branded headsets.

Why I want to use tether? This is for the use case of connecting to PC, mind you. Because latency can easily kill VR? Low latency video streams over wifi don't look exactly great and they have to be synced perfectly with your head motion.
The mobile processor has its limits. I'm just saying it would be a neat option to be able to make use of your PCs power to the fullest when you already have a headset that would be capable of doing the input and display part.

Can you do any of that with the Quest though? I thought the point of the quest was that it was self contained and the USB port was only for charging. Fair enough if that's what you'd like to have from a headset, but if it's wishlist stuff then I'd prefer if you were more explicit about that. Or have I missed something about the Quest headset?

Edit: Maybe I have missed VRidge. I'd not heard of that before in any of the coverage of this, or am really sure what it is.

I got one yesterday. The setup was easy, impressive OLED screens, the inside-out tracking works really well, the controllers are awesome.

Played a bit of Robot Recall, Vader Immortal, and tried Virtual Desktop (steaming my PC with SBS 3D stereo support) and Skybox VR (virtual cinema also with SBS 3D support).

I'll probably get Super Hot and Moss during the next sale, the prices are kinda high right now.

The prescription lenses inserts from the Oculus GO works with the Quest, so I can use it without wearing my glasses. Really cool!

I'm happy with it so far, feeling like having just bought a new next gen gaming console - with a good enough lineup. I think the price is fair for the quality of the product - well, the 64 GB version.

Next I'm looking forward to ALVR - currently in alpha - for streaming Steam VR games. The first reviews are positive and it is still in alpha, I'll give it a try when ready.
