Nintendo 3DS

[so, you're judging the world's best-selling games console of all time, and by far the best console since the SNES, on the basis of one game

Well at least it's a zelda game. ;)

Anyway, i tried different games as well (not many in fact) and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow was the only promising one.

Until now, i prefer the GBA for it's library.

The funny thing is, that she has got Zoo Keeper and never plays it, because she always takes my Caanoo to play Animatch for the better music. :D

I'm happy that 2D Gaming in high resolution (in regard to the screensize) is an important part of the openpandora

and since i'm a PC-Gamer for ages, this means a lot to me. I remember playing Settlers2 in 1024x768 and most of the games in 640x480 in the mid of the 90s. :)

But hey, if you like the SNES as much as i do, i should consider getting an old DS that still can be JBd.

How long should it be possible to get new batteries for it?

Never had these problems with my old AA-Gameboy.

Nobody is forcing you to play these games.

An awesome hands-on with the 3DS XL in the link below!!!

I loved the GBA almost as much as the SNES, but I've long felt that its library has nothing on the DS'. We've got a recommendations thread here which covers some overlooked titles and other such recommendations. It's full of quality game suggestions, but it doesn't even begin to scratch the surface. Still, it's as good a starting point as any! :D

I'm afraid I don't know the battery situation, but I haven't heard anything to suggest that official spares for the DS line have been discontinued yet (though I can't seem to find any for sale, either). That said, replacement batteries and clip-on battery-extenders for the 3DS are in far more plentiful supply - not to mention that the 3DS nets you access to the DSiWare library also, as well as running all DS games except for the few that required GBA slot peripherals (some of the most notable of which never left Japan - such as Slide Adventure: Mag Kid).

I'm afraid that I don't know what "JBd" means, though - that's not a term that I'm familiar with, so I don't know what to suggest, there. :p

What gets me, is that when Sony does the same thing, the same people whining about this won't whine about that. They also won't whine if Sony were to make actual alterations. It's hypocrisy.
Surely it's not like it's not happening the other way around, too...

I played Phantom Hourglass on my girlfriends DS and couldn't believe, that i had to blow into a microphone and one time even shout into it (well, blowing works there too).
That last part is actually typical Nintendo humor (and, from what I can tell, a kind of humor quite prevalent throughout Japan, too). If you did not understand it, I can only suggest to try out any game of the 'Paper Mario' or 'Mario & Luigi' series.

(For everyone who hasn't played Phantom Hourglass, here's what happens in the game (no story spoilers, but obviously a small joke spoiler): At one point, the game (or rather one of the in-game characters, if I remember correctly) instructs the player to shout the name of a certain game character that's behind the other side of a door (the player knows which character it is, so it's neither a guessing game nor a quiz). As soon as the game has registered a noise, the in-game dialogue continues about as follows: ~"Wait, you didn't actually just shout that name out loud, did you? [NEXT DIALOGUE PAGE] You could just have blown into the microphone...")

Ouch.

That was way too loud for my liking.

Actually, any model DS can be "jailbroken", as they use flash cards to allow for home brew and personal backups(not modifications to the actual OS like apple products). The original DS's(lites & phats) can use the most of these cards, as those units don't require any firmware updates that may block usage. The DSi & 3DS models don't use as many, unless you have any original vanilla units, but that would be hard to find, and isn't really required.

I personally own a "DSTwo Card", and it runs on DSi and 3DS(well on the 3DS until yesterdays new update), but that should be fixed within the next 24-48hrs. There are a few more cards that run on DSi and 3DS units with their latest firmwares, but I'm not really familiar with any of those besides the DSTwo.

The DStwo also has a cpu built into it, so it allows for pretty decent SNES and GBA emulation. This is the best card that I know of, and they normally update within 1-2 days of any Nintendo updates, so your normally not without use, which is good.

JailBreaked, presumably. Strictly for running homebrew I would hope.
Ahh, I see. Thanks for shedding light on that. :)

No doubt, but my point is not exactly who is saying what about who specifically (it's just that it much more commonly seems to be as stated*), so much as it is that the loudmouthed minority of tribalistic "OMG Look at me! I'm a *GAMER!!!!!*" types who are inclined this way are hypocrites. :p

*(This was also easily observable earlier in the year: Nintendo made a 43bn Yen loss and had their return to profitability already forecast, yet they were "DOOOOOOOOOOOMED!!"; Sony made a 456.7bn Yen loss, with one of its most major arms making losses for most of the last decade, but they're "Doing fine, they'll bounce back soon enough!". Like I said, it's hypocrisy.)

I'm not a fan of modern Zelda games (I only like the first two, and that's it), but that did make me chuckle.

As an aside, with the 3DS, you can tap the microphone with your thumb and it will respond almost like a button. I have no idea how it is with games, but you can observe this on the Home Menu quite easily.

Just a side-note to this, relating to certain homebrew features, if I may: The DSi lacks the ability to sense pressure on its touch-screen. That the DS and DS Lite can is a leftover from an unused feature of the hardware, and it was removed from the DSi (and, by extension, the DSi XL). This means that if you can still find the older DS-homebrew version of Colors!, it either won't work, or won't work properly, on a DSi or DSi XL. I don't know for sure, but this very likely also applies to the 3DS, as well (but that has a much more refined official version of Colors! available to purchase, so it evens out).

Wow interesting. I didn't know that the original DS's screen was pressure sensitive and that the current generation of systems have screens that aren't.

^ Well, technically, the screens of the DSi, DSi XL, and 3DS can all deal with it, too (resistive screens all do to varying degrees, by their very nature), but the low-level support for it is no longer present as of the DSi. That's my understanding of it.

Yeah, I never knew this either. Considering I have never run across any games that supported that feature(at least that I noticed), I can't imagine it is greatly missed. Like it was stated above, Colors seems to be the biggest use for the feature, and I have to assume the 3DS version trumps any previous efforts, so all is good I suppose.

Chris

^ That's the gist of it. :)

No retail games use the feature, as it actually varies per unit, and my understanding is that it was disallowed from use for that reason (which is another reason it was eventually removed completely). Obviously, this wasn't an issue for homebrew, where a calibration feature for individual units was a perfectly acceptable approach - that sort of inconsistency probably wouldn't fly at retail, though, I would imagine.

Colors! 3D is very far away from how the original releases were, and it has settings to simulate pressure available to make up for the absence of actual pressure-sensing - you can both mess with the brush opacity, or hold up or down on the d-pad whilst drawing to make a light stroke or a heavy stroke, respectively. It ends up giving pretty much the same results.

I can't wait to get a 3DS XL...I'm so Jelly of you Europeans. :(
I agree. Europe has been doing killer on games and system releases lately. We used to get a game or system release here and there before Japan, but always before the UK, now it is completely differant. Nintendo has been showing them way more love over the last year for sure.

I already transfered my DSiware games from my DSiXL to my 3DS, and I'm listing my XL this week on Ebay. Then once the 3DSXL arrives, I'll do my tranfers and then my original 3DS is going up for sell as well. If my sales go as planned, I should be able to cover my 3DSXL cost, as well as putting a few bucks in my pocket. ;)
