.next alpha image

is there some kind of bugtracker or issue collection page for it, or should we report issues in this thread?
I'll definitely install and test tonight :) I'm eager to see .next! Thanks for your hard work!

Just dump everything in here. It's a lot less work to use than some bugtracker that requires signing up for.

And a bit of extra activity in this section probably doesn't hurt either :)

I didn't get any browser to work. (Arora, Qupzilla, Firefox)

Also LibreOffice.

pndrun_out shows some library error.

For Firefox I think it was this one: libtiff.so.5

Will try set all the symlinks Linux-Swat posted and see if there are still the same errors.

Also was it intentional you did not include Mousepad?

I suppose I can install it with form the Angstrom Repo but it might me nice to have it installed.

How do you add a wifi using the configuation manager when the freaking ok button is hidden.

Edit: Shift+drag.. got it

I started with a completely empty image and added stuff when i needed it.

I just didn't get to the point yet where i needed a gui text editor :)

milky is failing - libcurl.so.4

Kami Retro - gray screen

pcsx - working

Drastic - working

With Linux-Swats symlinks Firefox starts now.

Here some logfiles of PNDs still not starting:

added the systemd verion of the state stuff,  an opkg upgrade should take care of it

Here is my first report.

I try to avoid stuff that has already be mentioned. However, I did not have the time to read all posts carefully, so please excuse I doubled something.

- On first boot: Before CPU settings choice, display goes blank. Brought to live again by pressing a key.

- Pandora button doesn't bring up the Applications menu in XFCE. (I chose the "default config" for the panel).

- Having the panel on top and on the bottom again something (launcher bar?), that eats up vertical space, is not so good on a screen that only has 480px vertically only.

I suggest to deactivate that launcher by default.

OTOH, having the panel on top is quite a good idea.

For better handling of the applications menu with the stylus. I'd maybe move the applications menu to the right.

- In order to save horizontal space on the panel, remove the long label "Applications Menu" and just keep its icon. Also, don't display the full user name on the right of the panel, but rather display a "user" icon.

- Maybe add - at least for the development phase - a desktop icon that directly executes "sudo opkg update && sudo opkg upgrade". This will make it easier for the testers to always test the latest stuff.

Now I tried to get my favorite application, NoteCase Pro, to run.

The pndout file reports a missing library.

Fix:

cd /usr/lib

ln -s libssl.so.1.0.0 libssl.so.0.9.8

cd /lib

ln -s libcrypto.so.1.0.0 libcrypto.so.0.9.8

Now I tried to start NoteCase Pro again and get:

./notecase: /usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.8: version 'OPENSSL_0.9.8' not found (required by ./notecase)

./notecase: /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.8: version 'OPENSSL_0.9.8' not found (required by ./notecase)

I don't know what this means.

On SL4P, I could make NoteCase Pro run flawlessly with exactly the above links.

So much for today. Need some sleep now.

Good night!

The screen going blank is the screensaver kicking in when the time and date is set.

The panel settings (and other xfce settings like the fonts) still needs to be done.

The old pandora settings are for xfce4.6, so they'll need a bit of work to fully work with 4.10

There are a few other pnds with the openssl problem, i guess a symlink doesn't always fix everything :)

Xfce settings are easy part. Someone needs to configure the settings in a more ergonomic way and share the files located in /etc/xdg/xfce4

For example the file /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts.xml with pandora button opening the menu.

okay, I'll gladly care about that part of ergonomically configuring the panel. However, I don't know which settings are saved where. I also suspect, that some settings are saved per user in the user's home? Well, I'll try to figure this out.

About the screensaver in first-boot wizard: I think this should be switched off. Hasn't ED done it for SZ, too?

Does this image have newer versions of Python / pygame / gtk ?

Gtk3 would be awesome, since so many applications now cannot be ported because gtk3 becomes a requirement.

doesn't look like there's a python3 recipe, so it looks like python 2.7.3 is as good as it gets from the default openembedded packages.

gtk+3 3.2.3 is there.

A pygame recipe doesn't seem to exist, and the old one requires a bit of patching to get going.

I'll try to get that going tonight, since i do have some pygame scripts i used on my pandora ( ok, it's really because of barbie seahorse adventure)

Hi guys,

I created a first configuration for XFCE for you to test and comment on.

The Panel:

I have created a panel configuration in the most ergonomic way I could find for the Pandora:

etc_xdg_xfce4__next_panel_hmc.tar.gz

Simply untar this and replace your /etc/xdg/xfce4 contents with the contents of this tarball.

I hope it really contains all the settings that I have made.

Let me explain:

test.png

The panel is on the top. Easier reachable with the stylus than on the bottom.

The applications menu (notice the new icon :) is on the right, where it is easily reachable for a right-handed person using the stylus.

It may be a matter of getting used to, that the sub menus open to the left. Let me know what you think about that. I think it's much better than having the applications menu in the bottom left corner.

Then, from left to right:

On the left:

  • Shutdown button
  • Reboot button
  • Clock with weekday display (how often do I have a look onto the clock but also want to know the current weekday!)
  • Open application buttons
On the right:

  • Workspaces buttons; 2 workspaces vertically arranged to save horizontal space on the panel
  • Show Desktop button
  • Screenshot button (this may be a good helper in the .next development phase. May be removed later.
  • Notification area containing full-size buttons of:
    Pandora Configbutton
  • Network Manager
[*]A launcher button with a dropdown for some often-used programs: File Manager, PNDManager, Terminal, Web Browser, Upgrade Pandora OS
[*]The applications menu button

Keyboard shortcuts:

I configured the Pandora button to open the applications menu.

However, this has a problem: If you longpress the Pandora button to trigger the "kill application" dialog, this is interpreted by the repeated keypress settings as a lot of presses that raise a lot of application menus. It seems that in current SZ1.54 this is solved by simply switching off the key repitition. I hope there is a more elegant fix for this ;-) Any idea?

Comments, critizism and suggestions for further optimization are welcome.

Daniel

Sorry, but no.
Personally I would really prefer it as it was. It is also what most users will expect and these settings make it doubly confusing.

And why separate buttons for shutdown and reboot? This looks to me like extra clutter (SL4P has an 'exit' button that gives you the 'Log out' menu), just like the extra buttons you have put on the right.

I mean some of the functions are 'neat', but clutter is the last thing you want on a tiny screen.

No problem; I can generate a config similar to how it was in SZ.

I assumed that my proposal would raise some controvery. ;-)

Did you actually try my proposed solution, or do you only judge from the screenshot and description?

I have done a similar arrangement back then for the Zaurus (click here to see screenshots) and people liked it a lot.

I agree with you that the shutdown and reboot buttons are not needed. The shutdown button doesn't work correctly anyway (brings me into a login screen instead) and I found the "Logout" item in the applications menu, which does what it currently does in SZ, too: Shows a selection dialog for "Shutdown", "Reboot" and "Logout". That's better and fully sufficient. Just the ordering of items in the applications menu is not good. I don't know yet how to change that.

Which buttons on the right do you consider clutter?

Also, what do others think?
