LeTux OS

To recap what I've tried and where we are, now that someone else can boot LeTux (at least using my second SD Card image - the gz file):

Log in and get wifi working:
Username is:
root
Password is empty, so just hit enter to log in

Enable the wireless interface (found using the command iwconfig)
ifconfig wlan0 up

Save my WiFi network name & key:
wpa_passphrase WLAN_NAME WLAN_PASSWORD > /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
(replacing WLAN_NAME with my actual SSID, and WLAN_PASSWORD with my actual password)

Connect using the wext driver:
wpa_supplicant -B -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -D wext

Turn on DHCP:
dhclient wlan0

Create a user:
adduser john
Add to sudo group:
usermod -aG sudo john

Log out of root:
exit
then log in as the new user

If I try startx here, I get the output "-bash: startx: command not found".

Install updates:
sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade

I get the option to replace or keep the file:
/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc
I have tried both options and have the same issues later. In this case, I will keep the installed version.

startx runs now, but fails:
"xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server error"

When I check the log at:
/home/john/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log

I get some errors:
[ 1243.327] (EE) systemd-logind: failed to get session: PID 8369 does not belong to any known session

this PID changes every time I run startx, and when I run
ps -p 8369
I get this output:
PID TTY TIME CMD

later:
[ 1243.369] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: Permission denied

and later still:
[ 1243.373] (EE) open /dev/fb0: Permission denied
[ 1243.373] (EE) No devices detected.
[ 1243.373] (EE) Fatal server error:

If we add our user to the video group:
sudo usermod -aG video john
log out and log back in.
This seems to resolve the two permission denied errors.

When comparing PyraOS & LeTux, I noticed we don't have identical files in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d
PyraOS doesn't have 10-evdev.conf (which only has sections called "InputClass")
LeTux doesn't have the same 40-libinput.conf, and is completely missing 70-wacom.conf and 10-radeon.conf
There is a 10-amdgpu.conf, but they are identical
I copied 10-radeon.conf over from PyraOS, and it didn't appear to change anything.

With that done, this is the full log again:

I don't know, if PyraOS works but LetuxOS not, I'd keep comparing what's in /etc/X11 in bith (specially xorg.conf, xorg.conf.d) and your last log in LetuxOS with /var/log/Xorg.0.log or /var/log/lightdm/x-0.log or similar.
I find curious that your last log says
[ 98.084] falling back to /sys/devices/platform/44000000.ocp/5600fe00.target-module/56000000.gpu/drm/card1
[ 98.183] (II) modeset(G0): using drv /dev/dri/card2

I made a tiny bit of progress. Big thanks to aTc, anonymoushindeiru, and TrashyMG on the Pyra Discord and Elw3 on irc for helping me learn how to connect to the mobile network using Modem Manager and how to interact with the modem directly using AT commands.

I made sure my sim card & Pyra play nice together by first connecting to TMobile using the Modem Manager GUI, and as long as there's a VERY strong signal, my Pyra connects and can use WWAN normally. Any small change, even just stepping 1 meter away from the window, where I had a great connection, caused the reception to drop so bad that it was basically unusable.

Since I want to make sure I'm testing in a place with the highest chance of knowing if what I'm doing is working, I can only test from my office. I can't seem to connect from home, at all. That really limits the time I have for testing this.

I was also able to connect to the modem in PyraOS using screen, with the command:
screen /dev/ttyACM1 115200
and run some super basic AT commands to verify I was really talking to the modem.
I booted LeTux, installed screen, and tried to connect the same way I did above, but there was no ttyACM1 device. The command
sudo dmesg | grep cdc_acm
had no output, and just looking at what was in /dev/ gave me no more info.

aTc suggested I check
sudo rfkill list
and I found that WWAN was soft blocked.
sudo rfkill unblock wwan
unblocked it, and now I see ttyACM0 through ttyACM4
as output when I check
sudo dmesg | grep cdc_acm

Baby steps, but big for me, and hopefully I can do some more tomorrow.

I was able to do some more testing in LeTux today.

I connected to the modem using screen just like in PyraOS:
sudo screen /dev/ttyACM1 115200

I tried a series of commands that I came up with, but it wasn't quite right, and I wasn't connecting. aTc came through again and shared his notes from when he tested. Turns out I had the last command wrong, so I did get close!

I used
AT+CPIN?
to see if my SIM is pin locked, but I was pretty sure it was not. The output
READY
confirmed that it is not.

If it were, I'd need to use
AT+CPIN=0000
replacing "0000" the the actual pin

Checking for network operators
AT+COPS?
showed T-Mobile only (that is the carrier I use).

AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","fast.t-mobile.com"
ensured my APN was set correctly.

AT+CGATT=1
should attach to the network, but I kept getting a response
+CME ERROR

I tried detaching from the network with
AT+CGATT=0
waiting a few seconds and then using
AT+CGATT=1
again. It worked, but in retrospect, I'm not sure if it was re-attaching that worked or just getting lucky to have enough reception to successfully attach. Especially since I tried this two or three times before I got the OK response I was hoping for.

AT^SWWAN=1,1,1
connects it to wwan0

Then, I detached from the screen session with CTRL-A, D

sudo dhclient wwan0
turned dhcp on

and I was able to ping dragonbox.de!
20240913_180659.png

To check the connection strength, I connected to the modem with screen again and used
AT+CSQ
Response
15,99
Holding the Pyra up directly against the window got me
16,99

AT^SMONI
Response
2G, SEARCH, SEARCH
which seems wrong and bad to me (2G?), but could have been because of my weak connection. This means "searching and could not (yet) find a suitable GSM (2G) cell", according to our modem's command set docs.

I'll try again tomorrow to see if I get different results at another location.

Was the 2G stable for you? that alone would be some kind of success already?
I would ask you to not go into more detail here.
The LeTux issue in regards to LTE has been solved.

I plan to open up a new thread regarding specifically the LTE issue that keeps the first post updated and collects all the guesses out there.

Nothing about the connection was stable. I'm wondering if that's just the first network it's looking for before trying the higher speed networks. I need to do more testing and learning there.

I realize now that I got all excited and blew right past the scope of this thread. It was supposed to just be about booting and running LeTux.

I'll keep investigating the lte stuff and save my notes for now. When I see your post for the LTE issue, I can add it there.

Okay so it is pretty much the same as on PyraOS.

No worries, we are exactly where we need to be. This is exactly what this thread is there for :)
All the technical stuff should go in here.

If you do not mind writing things down twice, you're welcomed to post everything here. I just wanted to warn you that I might open a dedicated LTE thread soon and save you some work ;)
There are conversations happening on Discord and I think we should collect those guesses and investigations specific to LTE in a specific topic. Feel free to add more here, just be aware that I plan to open a dedicated LTE topic as well, in the style of my "call to help" topic.
