Please show-me some good memory comparison that shows KDE 4 using less memory than KDE3. Something like that:
http://ktown.kde.org/~seli/memory/
This one (the "39% less memory" one) is bogus:
http://www.kdedevelopers.org/node/3138
It was latter remade using exmap and the result was that "In similar conditions KDE 3 consumed 97 MB (+29 MB by XServer) on memory, whereas KDE 4 about 170 MB (+72 MB by XServer)."
Most of it is the QT's double-buffering. I don't know how KDE 4.2 is doing, as they now had some time for at least the most obvious memory optmizations. Here an example:

Oh, the source for my 22mb claim:
http://translate.google.com/translate?u=ht...BR&ie=UTF-8 (funny google translation)
Additionally, kde4 is by far not complete yet and a lot of KDE4 parts aren't fully ported to KDE4-libraries, yet. Using kde4 without additions from nonKDE4-programs and therefor nonKDE4-libraries won't give you a complete Desktop-Environment.
Still, when it comes to a point, where the main programs of KDE4 are useable on small 800x480 displays, most of the memory issues and missing features will probably be solved. Maybe with KDE4.3? Who knows...
